Heh I came back on here to see if the forum was still around. Wow the website is awful now.

Edit: it appears the slack link is dead too :(

Dammit. Y'all just made me want pâté, and that's definitely not part of my diet.

I've completely forgotten what the OP was about, but this thread has been entertaining to say the least.

Re: Retro Build

Interesting stuff; not sure how I missed this thread. Only thing I might suggest is losing the wireless USB NIC, as it certainly uses measurably more CPU overhead. Kinda wild that you were able to find a ~2007 videocard in standard PCI, as that was at least a couple years after the end of AGP. I ab...

Re: Retro Build

The DMS-59 adapter arrived around the 1st. Whenever I was using the HD 3450, it would get a corrupted screen during POST and lock the system completely. 5 minutes ago, I realized the four gigs of ram might be interfering when the PCI address range, so I removed a stick as a test. It booted right up....

Re: Retro Build

There are Linux builds of Pale Moon, which is a maintained fork of v20-something Firefox. No idea if they work on a P3. Thanks for the suggestion. Someone made a SSE(1) build of Palemoon v27 for linux , and it runs a lot better than Firefox 45. With the HD 3450, it might be able to play youtube vid...

Nice build! How well does it run modern software? Browsing the 2019 web (even just to post on Tech Report) on a system like that sounds rather painful! The biggest issue with browsing the web is that Firefox 45 Extended Support (Support was dropped in 49) is the newest web browser I can find that d...

IT"S ALIVE (sort of) https://i.ibb.co/xLJ6mHZ/image.png (sorry for the rotated image) All of the core components arrived today, so I threw it all together on my desk for testing. One CPU came with a single bent pin that prevented socket insertion before I bent it back. The coolers were complete...

Re: How much VRAM for a casual gamer?

Should I favour one brand over another: MSI Radeon, Gigabyte Radeon, Gigabyte Aorus, Sapphire Pulse, Sapphire Nitro+? For RX 580s/590s, I recommend going for an Asus ROG Strix or a Sapphire Nitro/Pulse if they aren't too much more expensive. Those two seem to have the best coolers on them. If you d...

What do you mean by "tangent sights?" If you mean a blade or post front and a notch rear, set the big orange bull on top of the front sight flanked by the notch, flat across the top. If you mean the peep sights from the original picture, punch a circular hole near the center of the orange...

DrD, The next time you are in Walmart pick up a couple of boxes of CCI standard velocity 22LR for $3.47 per box of 50. Just Cause 3 (or at least I'm trying to play it :x) The devs that made this game deserve an award for their sheer laziness. The recommended system for JC3 includes 8 GB of ram, yet there are several memory leaks that cause the game to need 16 GB and crash with less. There is a aircraft missile upgra...

Re: Anand's RyZen+ Review just got revised

What system clock do extreme overclockers now have to use to submit a valid benchmark? For the unfamiliar, Hwbot is the primary database/rule making authority for competitive overclocking. Windows 8 and Windows 10 have an issue with RTC time-drift on some platforms. As a result, most platforms and ...

I can't imagine there are more than a half-dozen people remaining in the world (if there's anyone left at this point) who would go to that much effort and expense just for a shot at OC bragging rights on a 5 year old CPU. There are more than you think. http://hwbot.org/benchmark/cpu_frequency/ranki...

Re: Best CPU/motherboard for pairing with some DDR3?

WTF... who is buying these things? There must be a bunch of other people like you out there trying to re-use a bunch of old DDR3 RAM (due to the current high RAM prices) or something. Yip. I had friend ask me for help upgrading his FX-6300 in January. I told him to buy a Haswell system and reuse hi...

1) The RX 480 and 580 are identical GPUs, but the 580 is clocked higher. The RX 470 and 570 are also the same card with different clocks. 2) The RX 470 does have decently worse 99th percentile frametimes than the RX 580 according to TR. 3) The R9 Fury/ Fury X preform noticeably better than the RX 48...
