I had to shoot this portrait inside because the it was raining outside. Because we didn't have a good place to shoot, I used a second flash to over expose the wood panel wall behind them.

Never mind the gold chain.

LJ: Awesome bird. I'd print that out and frame it for my wall if I had a large version of it. Darn nice work! It's kind of noisy, so I wouldn't go too big with it: http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/~jstroik/img_0875-big.jpg Also, what do you mean by 'open'? Compare: http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/~jstroik/facing-...

Anyways, if anyone has any special tips for something like this let me know. The weather is supposed to be nice and sunny, so I figure it will make for some nice atmosphere and I think my camera is good enough that I should be able to get some really great shots. 8) Definitely use a polarizer filte...

I usually reinstall Windows with a new hard drive or new system. That's about once every three years. Of course, I only use windows to play WC3 and Stepmania so that probably contributes to its DLL-Decay moving more slowly.

I love both of those pictures - until I started following this thread, I always sorta thought that there was little to no talent involved in taking good pictures, that it was just a matter of having a good camera and finding something interesting to take a picture of. I was wrong. There is a ton to...

I love it how some of you guys put in a disclaimer before your pics like, "I was just shooting quickly...", or "the lighting was bad" or "I had to shoot at ISO 3200 with a long shutter and no tripod" yet the pictures always come out really, really beautiful. Modesty rules, I guess. I've actually be...

Interesting shot, Aphasia. This weekend I went to the Milwaukee zoo with my girlfriend. She took the majority of the shots there, and we were often shooting through dirty plexiglass in very poorly lit conditions (many of these shots are at ISO 3200 and 1/25s). I haven't bothered to reduce the noise ...

I am impressed you got your mother running Debian. I wouldn't dare steer my parents away from their cosy Windows existence. It's been anything but for my parents. I've locked the machine down reasonably tight, and they've had quite a few issues with it (from generic issues to spyware). I'm quite co...

Don't buy a hard drive that says Maxtor on it. Many of their models have ridiculously high failure rates and their customer support is, by far, the worst of any drive vendor.

What most cheap cameras doesnt give you is control. But for the ones that do, you just have to make them work for you. And the last but most important thing is DOF. Most cameras give a really too deep DOF for blurring the background properly in portraits, but you can work around that somewhat, choo...

so my challenge/question to you pro's (or rich ppl out there), is what is the absolute CHEAPEST high-quality camera i can buy? i prefer digital then to the old fashioned film ones... but you can list both.... It really depends on what you want to do. At that point, it would be moot to get an SLR. W...

I watched it and thought it was pretty damn funny. Then again, I like outrageous movies.

However, like Super Troopers, this movie gets waay too much love. Sure, it's funny, but it's not the best thing since Army of Darkness.

While I agree the execution was lacking at first ( especially the first season), IMO it has steadily improved each season. Too bad the ratings didn't follow suit. Whie it did seem to improve marginally in the third and fourth seasons, it hadn't improved enough to retain its viewership levels. The w...
