Re: High end home firewall/proxy

I know you said you would rather just have a pre-built appliance, but an Untangle box is quite painless to set up. Just get it up and running, turn on the modules on the web interface, and block the ports you want. I don't know what kind of connection you have at your home, but Untangle likes CPU po...

Re: Advice on building cheap cheap linux storage server

If you don't want to go with Atom, then I just grab a Celeron G530. It is a 2.40GHz dual-core Sandy Bridge chip and is $52 on the Egg. Or if you want to spend a little more ($83) you can grab a Pentium G620T which is a 2.20GHz dual-core Sandy Bridge, but is rated at 35W TDP rather than 65W. They won...

Re: Advice on building cheap cheap linux storage server

I also recommend an Atom machine. I had a single-core Atom 230 as my server for quite some time. I only upgraded to the Atom from my 450MHz Pentium II for noise reasons. It doesn't take much power to serve up files and stuff. I would still get a dual-core model (330, D510, D525) just in case you wan...

Re: Custom Built Home Router

You might also want to consider running Untangle. There is a free version and I love it. It's requirements are a little steeper than some of the others like Smoothwall. However, it is the general consensus on the Untangle forums that a dual-core Atom with proper (Intel) NICs is perfect for a home us...

... I think it is also capable of using the gpu to process data... Excel 2010 doesn't support GPU calculation if that is what you mean. They added GPU support for 3D shapes and chart creation. If they could make the GPU do the calculations the speed improvements would be unbelievable even for a sys...

Re: Favourite Cpu of all times

Seems like I am going to be the only person listing a Pentium 4 as my favorite. It was 1.60GHz Pentium 4 with the Willamette core. I picked this one because it brought me in to world of geekdom. It made me want to learn about computers rather than just use them and the rest is history. Runner ups: 2...

Re: Ye Olde SoundBlaster Live! In My New Computer?

Your motherboard has an integrated sound chipset. As for using the old sound card, I don't see why it wouldn't work physically. It is just that I don't know if Windows 7 would like it or not. I know it is old but I would check their website for Win7 drivers before I tried it.

I am currently in the same situation as you except I have the CPU and board already. I can tell you that it will NOT boot with any of the old BIOSes. However, if you call or live chat with ASUS they will give you a case number and direct you to their BIOS department which should ship you a replaceme...

Best Free GPU-Accelerated DVD Decoder for 2000?

I have some machines that run Windows 2000 and unfortunately the PureVideo decoder from NVIDIA only works with XP. I know that VLC will play DVDs, but it doesn't use the GPU for decoding. So, does anyone know of a free DVD decoder that utilizes the graphics card?

Thanks.

Yeah, my only option is to stick with Vista 32-bit and lose a gigabyte of the 4 gigs. As I said before, I don't really mind. I just want to make sure that there aren't going to be any hidden slow downs with giving a 32-bit OS that much memory.

XPS M1210 Memory Upgrade.

I am planning on upgrading my M1210 to 4GB of RAM. I am running a Core Duo and Vista 32-bit, I know that the full amount will not be shown. However, I do know that it does show a little over 3GB. If I can gain another GB with the upgrade, then it is worth it to me. What I am concerned with is the pe...

Do you mean that you want a CD / DVD program that will rip something or just burning software? I use both of the programs I listed below on Windows 2000 and Windows XP machines. If you just want to burn data and video clips to a CD / DVD then you can try DeepBurner . This program is only a burner, n...

There should be no problem running ME on a Pentium 4. However, I don't think that ME can handle more than 512MB of RAM and if you get a Pentium 4 with HT (any of the C processors, or the 3.06) you will need to disable Hyper-Threading since ME isn't multithreaded. As for ME not running correctly on s...

PureVideo. Colors Are Washed Out When Playing A DVD.

I just bought the PureVideo Bronze Decoder and installed it on my machine with a 7800 GS. Everything seems to be fine, but the video is almost black and white! I also installed the decoder on my other machines and they all have improved color on the DVD. My 6800 GT's output is great. Any ideas? I am...

Daisy Chain a D-Link DI-524 & a DI-808HV Together.

I have an interesting situation. I currently have a DI-524 router and I have 4 computers connected to it via LAN and 3 computers connected wirelessly (plus one more if I can't get this idea to work). I often share large files between these computers, so I would like to have the 2 laptops in my room ...

What happened to Ambient Temps?

My new BFG 7800 GS does not give a readout of the ambient temperature? What gives? All of my other cards with temperature monitoring do except for the 6600 GT. Why did they eliminate this feature?

There is no way I can jump ship for this price and anyway I don't feel like I need to do a complete overhaul just yet. I will be getting a new laptop soon and I just wanted to max out my 3.40. Going PCI-E is out of the question right now.

I do not plan to overclock either card any farther. I have just had great luck with BFG's warranty service. I am not sure about the double lifetime deal, never heard of that one. I remember a company I was looking at when I was shopping for my 6800 GT that offered a 'lifetime' warranty. It was basic...
