Re: Technology purchasing and "moments of weakness"

3 years ago I bought an Acer XB280HK "on sale" because my old monitors were developing discoloration, I wanted a G-Sync monitor, and I thought I wanted 4K. The monitor did what it was supposed to do but... * it was TN (with all that entails) * 4k at that size required me to go to Windows f...

Re: Technology purchasing and "moments of weakness"

Last year I decided to "treat myself" with my bonus and build a system with all the bells and whistles - giant gaming monitor, i7, and 1080Ti...about a month before I was hit by a car and out of work for months. Bad timing! To be fair to you, I wouldn't put "bought something before a...

Re: How do you actually run games on high-spec monitors?

I would also argue as resolution goes up, the need for AA goes away. I'd say the real determinant here is pixel density rather than absolute resolution. Turning off AA at 1440 for example could look great on a 27" monitor, but put it on a 72" TV and the jaggies would be much more noticeab...

Re: Using integrated graphics plus dedicated GPU

It's a mildly complicated situation where, at least at the moment, I want to drive the main display from the DVI on the 1070. But my 1070 has only one DVI output. I'm still experimenting. If I set the BIOS to treat the iGPU as primary, then windows then recognizes that there's another screen in add...

Re: Old PCI card in modern PC

I suspect compatible drivers would be your biggest impediment to having it actually work. Drivers for a card from that era weren't signed, so unless Microsoft happens to have kept a driver in its own device support library you may end up dropping back to generic display adapter. But as others have m...

Re: Hard Drive going south...

If it's a gaming-only box there typically is very little real-world difference between SSDs in terms of performance (take a look at TR's SSD reviews for example -- while some drives are indeed faster than others, the size of the difference is so small you're unlikely to notice if you're not actively...

Re: Am I bottlenecked?

But realistically your best bet is live with it for a month or so and see what it's like. Only high-end stuff is planned for any release soon. The rumored 8-core Coffee Lake and Threadripper 2 (32 cores!!) are the only things that seem planned. I'd be surprised if the 8-core Coffee Lake is anything...

Re: Am I bottlenecked?

Checking benchmarks and other users performance it seems the 8700k is the best cpu for gaming and will have me see a rise in FPS. But the 7700k actually would be about the sweet spot if I didn't wanna go with the latest and greatest. In some games honestly the gain may seem pointless. But in games ...

Re: VEGA 64 Temps, Boost Clock, and Wattage

I have no experience with Vega cards so this is just speculation -- but does the card / driver / Asus software have a profile system for setting clocks vs. fan speed? It may be defaulting to a "quiet" profile rather than a "Max" profile.

Re: Vega 64 or GTX 1080 (not TI)?

AMD don't have competition for the 1080Ti, so Nvidia won't be aggressive on pricing. Expect a bare-minimum of $699 but with Nvidia likely having an untouchable halo product at least until Vega 7nm arrives, I wouldn't be remotely surprised to see them tack another hundred or two hundred dollars onto...

Mine has been fine too.

TBH, what you're describing sounds more like an incipient hardware failure. I've had things like that happen when a graphics card was going.

6 years ago, £250-300 or so would have got me that HD 7950 or a GTX 660 Ti. 6.5 years ago, for £350 or so I could have got the HD 7950 at launch or a GTX 580. Re: The Guild Wars 2 performance mystery deepens.

Have you tried 1080 instead of 1200? Maybe something in GW2s render engine isn't optimized for 16:10. Also, both games you mention are MMOs, which means a variable you can't control for is the number of other players in the zone. MMOs that otherwise have very modest performance requirements can get ...

Re: Going from 660 to 1080

As long as the power cables have 6+2 connectors you should be fine. The only other thing to consider is physical size. Many of the 1080 TI models have extra large coolers (extra tall or extra long, and also sometimes 2.5 slots wide), so you could run into clearance problems depending on your case an...

Most likely explanation is the patches they are developing have a dependency on SSE2 or later. It would make absolutely no sense for them to develop an entirely separate patch for the vanishingly small number of users who still use systems that old. Nor would it make sense to develop patches that av...

As Neutronbeam has already said, knowing what games she intends to play makes a big difference. Re: Cortex A76? In Arm’s words, it’s a “laptop-class” performance processor with mobile efficiency

This is the kind of thing I'm expecting for Apple bringing ARM chips to traditional PC spaces: start at the low CPU power and low power usage end and gradually move up. Something appropriate for an ultra-book where battery life and portability is more important than horsepower makes sense as a start...

Before jumping on the smaller cases, how tall is that Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 580 8 GB? Some of the HTPC cases are tight if you are putting a full height + extra high heat sink GPU in them. I went with the GD09 myself for that reason -- once you installed the GPU and attached the power cables, it w...

The table in the article says IPS. Existing GPUs can't drive these to their full potential, but given that a monitor of this capability is probably going to still be in active duty 10 years from now, that shouldn't be the be all and end all in the decision. (The eye-popping price tag on the other ha...

If you look at the CPU reviews on this site, there is a section called "DAW Bench" which benchmarks the CPUs in audio editing. Take a look at the RyZen first gen review, the Coffee Lake review, and the most recent RyZen 2700X review as a start.
