Re: Forget building buy THIS! (awesome deal at B&H)

Not really sure why it needs to be NAFTA qualified since a) it only ships to the States, and b) NAFTA iz ded, the new alphabet soup trade "deal" is in place now.

(Plus c) prolly only about 7 Canadians could afford that price anyway once you factor in the exchange... :-? :P

Re: i5-4590 sufficient?

I'll second JAE's recommendations. If you can soldier on until late year the entire GPU and CPU market will change with new product launches. That should let you either get a 2070 Super for cheaper than you can today or get a next gen card from either NVidia or AMD for similar money to the current 2...

Ouch! That's an expensive way to find out you had a PSU die.

I'm sure the new one will serve you well, though.

Re: System Guide query on "The Hybrid"

One thing for the OP to consider regarding the system guide -- it was written in January 2019. A lot has happened in ~18 months, so a system that made sense then isn't necessarily the best thing to get today.

Yeah. If you were already about to pull the trigger on the non-T model it would be worth getting the XT instead (since the prices aren't any higher), but I definitely wouldn't use these as a reason to start a new build or to upgrade.

Some interesting stuff in this GN video. I wouldn't have thought the shortages were caused by both a supply and a demand problem, but I guess they are. https://youtu.be/0whCHfejM18 ... and a shipping problem as well, based on the video. Re: Desktop to replace laptop

The OP could save $50+ by getting a SATA SSD instead of NVME -- this would entail some loss of read-write performance, but not ginormous. Also you could go with 16GB of RAM now (2x 8GB) then get a second set down the road as a way to keep the initial cost down. Depending on the size of images you wi...

Re: New PC Build random freezing/black screen

Check the Event Viewer to see if there are any administrative alerts -- that may help isolate a cause (assuming the system has time to write an event before it freezes). On the hardware front, you could try reseating the memory and the video card (just take them out and put them back in, making sure...

Re: Think I'm finally getting there with my 3950x temps.

I wonder if maybe your cooler and heat spreader aren't getting good contact. If one or the other isn't perfectly flat, there may be some bad contact that can impede cooling. JayZ has a video a couple of years ago where his CPU had a very slight bulge in the heat spreader that caused poor cooling (he...

Re: Upgrading a PC, am I spending too much in too little time?

Buying a new SSD is fine. Worst-case, you can move your drives to a new PC in the future. Shopping for another CPU for your old motherboard, however needs to be approached with caution. The lowest-end Ryzen 3 3000 series processor on a new B550 motherboard outperforms the best processor available f...

Admittedly it's all rumours at this point (so definitely don't bet the farm on it), but the scuttlebutt sez Ampere is going to have 2 - 3 times the ray tracing performance Turing did. And when Turing came out, Lisa Su basically said that AMD intended to support ray tracing but not until it was ready...

Re: Upgrading a PC, am I spending too much in too little time?

See if you can get an NVMe drive like the 960 EVO. That is much faster than a SATA drive like 860 EVO. You may need to get an NVMe to PCI express adapter card to install the NVMe SSD in one of your PCI Express 4x slots.. With the OP's motherboard, he will need a PCI card if he wants to go NVMe. And...

Re: Radeon RX 5600 XT - Why would you buy one?

Without ray-tracing, Radeon RX 5600XT is significantly faster than GeForce RTX2060... Citation needed on that one. Most of the reviews I've seen show them being in a dog fight rather than the 5600XT having a clear victory. For example, in Anand's review which one is ahead depends on which game and ...

How about "2060 isn't powerful enough at RT to bother using it for that"?

I'm not anti-RT by any means, but really if you want to use it for anything other than a light demo you need a 2070 Super or better.

You may find that going to an AMD 3600 system with 32gb ram will give you better performance than going to a 9700k. AMD Ryzen2 chips work really well in office tasks and beat Intel in both price and performance. Add me as another vote for an AMD chip in that budget range. If you're primarily using ...

Wow. If true, that's a hellaciously bad look for them. Over double the power consumption of AMD (socket TDP limit for 3900X/3950X is 142 watts) with 2 to 6 fewer cores. But is this power draw or TDP? The articles seem to intermingle the two ideas. This article is talking about the power draw the mo...
