Re: Case selection for silence, on air?

I've always built as-quiet-as-possible PCs without getting into fancy fanless PSUs and whatnot. Half your problem is the case, the other half is what you put in it. I recommend the Fractal Define R5, or the Define C (which I personally own and can attest for), and a Noctua D15S. Seeing as you alrea...

Re: Cheap laptop with good keyboard.

I actually like the 'chiclet' keyboard on an older 16" Toshiba I have... except that the 2wsx column appears to be 'going out', however that is possible. Still nice scissor-switch actuation, similar to what Apple tends to use or has used. I'll say that the keyboard on my work Latitude 13" ...

Re: 1080ti stuck at frustratingly low clock speed, please help.(UPDATE)

I've been avoiding this, but please tell me this (SLI) is worth all the trouble since you're using a 4k display. Only thing that'll get you close to running sub-16.7ms frametimes (solid 60FPS) is a US$3000 Tesla V. 1080Ti SLI is as good as it gets, and it's still not really fast enough. [and SLI wo...

Re: Nvidia Partner Program - Illegal?

It's likely an artifact of their product-line realignment. I'm still waiting to see if new gaming brands are developed for AMD products in order to comply with Nvidia's desire for separation in the retail space. Of course, AMD actually has to ship enough product in quantity for prices to actually dr...

Re: Nvidia Partner Program - Illegal?

The R7's definitely had me wanting to do an AMD build- but my main performance usage is gaming, and my money was better spend on my 8700k and it's not like it'd exactly be slow for anything else ;). But Threadripper? That's unique. My challenge for my workloads is that it'd still not be as fast for ...

Re: Nvidia Partner Program - Illegal?

Well they gained market share this last go around... so there is that. I think their market share in this GPU space is just a bubble thanks to crypto currency, so I want give them a bunch of credit for gaining share until we see where things land. They legitimately are kicking ass in the CPU market...

Re: Nvidia Partner Program - Illegal?

Hmmm, yeah I noticed that too. I've been looking at RX 580 cards for the past 2 months or so just to track the prices. The Aourus card specifically was one that constantly popped up. That seems to unlikely to have all of those brands remove those specific cards, but from a retailers site too? I'm n...

It's your wife- it's worth it to buy her what she wants, and it's not like it's significantly more expensive in terms of overall build cost :).

I thought Nvidia no longer supported SLI .. and are you using the "correct" bridge .... e.g. https://www.amazon.co.uk/adapter-flexible-PC24-Shop-Service/dp/B00576ESX2 Plenty of people have SLI running well, especially 1080 Ti cards, for high-end 4k/5k gaming as well as VR. It's simply the...

Re: Nvidia Partner Program - Illegal?

My opinion on this remains split, depending on whether the actual non-public terms require participants to have their gaming brands that host Nvidia GPUs separate from those that host AMD GPUs, or if they're only allowed to have one gaming brand which consequently will only host Nvidia GPUs. The lan...

Re: Bitlocker vs Password Protection

I'm not sure how it does it; I believe that the data partition is encrypted.

There is a difference in perspective here, though- the WD drive came empty, so there is no real setup time, whereas implementing Bitlocker on a populated drive would rightly take time.

Whereas Bitlocker can be difficult to access outside of a Windows machine- and you'll want that key handy.

[I have a WD portable drive that must run its software to decrypt and mount its contents- works well enough for me to not care]

About time.

I'd be happy to have Vulkan as the 'One API to Rule Them All'. Figure out graphics, and you have ultimate portability.

[and I'm with chuckie that this may not be very impressive performance-wise- getting Mac up to PC parity will likely be harder than getting Linux there]

Another vote for the Zalman- just works, and is actually pretty clear, so long as you can get it close and keep noise from rubbing against clothing minimized. It's also cheap enough to just try.

Recommend buying something cheap for mobile computing/media consumption, and building a desktop for gaming.

There's no such thing as a good gaming laptop. Even the nice ones are a crap-show from a Q/C standpoint.

Massdrop JBL LSR30z powered monitors and done. US$179 shipped for the pair, you won't find better sound for that price. Also, this is a revolving drop, so you get it within a few days, unlike most Massdrop sales that can take weeks or months. [I've participated in quite a few drops, every experienc...

1. You have to test the panel yourself. That's the only way to know. 2. Nope. They can be better or worse. 3. TFTCentral is one, but they're not big on laptops. You'll have to search for reviews of the specific models that you're interested in (or the series of models) to see how they test in terms ...

Re: Need a laptop, but not sure which anymore...

Two observations: -You want the i7 8550U or better, which is the quad core, and you want 16GB of RAM- the RAM would be the one thing that I wouldn't compromise on, ever, 16GB minimum, and for the 13" consumer class, that's also the max -You don't want the high-res panel, scaling still more or l...

Re: Need some advice/help on my new build: 1080 ti and i5-8600k?

I don't think AMD can match an i7-8700 for gaming. Even the Ryzen+ refresh due to arrive soon is unlikely to allow the 1800X successor to match an i7-8700 unless AMD release a 5GHz chip, which I don't think is likely. Ryzen is amazing at muti-threaded workloads. It's faster than similarly-priced In...

If you had wanted to game on Linux, Nvidia would be the current immediate choice to just get stuff working well.

AMD is making progress but hasn't quite caught up.

If you're not wanting to game- figure out how to get the Intel stuff working. There's no reason that it shouldn't!

In theory it should actually be easier to suppress electrical noise with a USB headset, since all the sensitive analog stuff is physically outside the PC, away from all the noisy system buses. That said, I'm sure USB headphone designers get it wrong sometimes. I'd be more worried about the quality ...

Core count and memory usage aren't necessarily correlated. Unless you're running a lot of VMs 32GB should still be enough. And even then... Really depends on how much and what kind of work being done, something I'm sure we're all aware of. If it ain't much, then, even a stack of Windows VMs (who wo...

Recommend doing a full 'as you use it' test, including (especially!) turning on VR, with a full battery, until dead.

You should still be able to get 1000 shots easily.
