Re: Vega is [also] overpriced because AMD has manufacturing problems

I look at it pretty simply: between gamers, high-end compute, and cryptocurrency miners, AMD can't make enough; rather, if they could make more, they would . There's a production problem somewhere , else AMD would step up to the demand. I'd also hesitate to draw any conclusions between the yields an...

Re: Looking for Prosumer mirrorless

Canon is going to have infinitely more lens selections, but their mirrorless cameras aren't the best. The EOS M6 isn't awful by any means. The EOS M5 is actually Canon's best mirrorless camera. Don't ask about the product numbering scheme. Yup, a little goofy, but (mostly) sequential. The M5/...

Re: Goodbye Vega 56 at MSRP

On the other hand, monitors have been changing very, very fast these last years. From TFT LCD to LED, with many more IPS/PV panels. Color is now almost always 100% of sRGB, Free/G-Sync wasn't even available and high-refresh is becoming very common. And it's not yet over: there are at least two new ...

Re: Goodbye Vega 56 at MSRP

It's edging into the territory where the Vega markup offsets the G-Sync tax... It depends. Maybe for the lower range. But when you get into 4k or 3440x1440p panels, G-sync models are generally considerably more than the delta in price between a 1080 and Vega 64. This is because G-sync selection is ...

Re: Vega Meta Analysis

AMD and Hynix co-developed HBM and probably in lieu of taking a licensing fee AMD would have negotiated preferential terms for the production of most, if not all, of Hynix's HBM production. This obviously left Nvidia in a bit of a hole and that's why they worked closely with Micron on GDDRX5/6 and ...

Re: Vega Meta Analysis

Mostly, the use of HBM (any version) is completely tied to the current Vega architecture. That means that the use of GDDRwhatever would require the design of a different GPU. Best explanation that I've heard (repeated here, even) is that AMD is simply too poor to spin up multiple big-chip designs, a...

Re: Vega Meta Analysis

It's funny how NV played their hands perfectly, albeit somewhat unintentionally, while AMD does the opposite. If I had to assign one attribute to Nvidia's GPU release strategy, it's execution. They've wound up coming from behind with technically lagging, inferior products more than once and have no...

Re: Goodbye Vega 56 at MSRP

Have you ever used freesync? Doubt it but you've read a few old reviews and now suddenly you're an expert. Give me a break please. You're talking utter and complete nonsense without any practical experience. My experience with freesync on a fury Pro and Vega 64 has been flawless and I'd even say am...

Re: Vega Meta Analysis

Can you provide documentation to show how Vega might be unstable in Power Save mode? I'd theorize that voltage might be dropped in Power Save below what a specific unit is stable, for example, but I'd like to see where this has been shown to be true. It kind of goes the opposite of AMD running their...

Re: Goodbye Vega 56 at MSRP

1) AMD did a pretty good job with the RX 480. not their fault the mining craze took off. They hedged their bets on HBM 2 and it did not go well. Proven track record, no, but it's not all doom and gloom. For the money they are pretty good if you can over look the higher power. Which brings up point ...

Re: Destiny 2 Beta

You thought the Division had an engaging story? I'm excited by the idea of a shooter that I can jump into and out of for some fun when I want to. I'm not interested in a gear grind, but at least that can guide my game time. I don't know if 'engaging' is the best description, but I did finish all of...

Re: Destiny 2 Beta

Played it, but I'm not sure that it's the kind of game for me.

Ran great with G-Sync and SLI using the latest drivers without unnecessary tweaking, but man does it come across as boring.

It's like The Division, with better gameplay, but without the engaging story.

Re: Goodbye Vega 56 at MSRP

What do you have against FreeSync? Sure, there have been a few issues with Polaris, but that's apparently been cleared up in the latest drivers. Vega (the subject of this thread) doesn't seem to have any issues. Against the technology itself? Nothing, really, but I'm still wary of the implementatio...

Because it is the fastest Freesync-capable GPU on the market right now that happens to be a very powerful customer-tier GPGPU. For Vega owners that jumped on 'Free'Sync? You can keep praying for those magic drivers that never come, because you won't have anything decent to upgrade to. What do you have against FreeSync? Re: Vega Meta Analysis

Please just stop and drop the green-tinted shades. I don't have green-tinted shades- I have reality-tinted shades. Vega is a poor buy at MSRP for most, and the people most interested in it are those that are buying just because they want to play with it, many owning 1080Ti's themselves, or those th...

Re: Goodbye Vega 56 at MSRP

I'm stunned really that you even believe AMD won't improve performance with Vega given that some of it's main features aren't fully implemented and the drivers are extremely immature. So future games are going to increase performance needs and lets not forget they'll be DX12 or Vulcan where it's cl...

Re: Vega Meta Analysis

Vega has demand simply because people are going out of their way in getting the damn cards despite their massively inflated prices from cypto-currency crazy. Why is this so difficult to grasp? Lack of demand would mean that cards would still on shelves collecting dust and retailer/etailers would do...

Re: Goodbye Vega 56 at MSRP

Whose logic is faulty??? Yours. Your card is a decent price/performance proposition, but is topped out, and AMD is unlikely to improve performance anywhere in the near future. That's AMD's trend. So you're locked in either to the performance level you're at while games continue increasing their per...

The Samsung C34F791, for one, is a 100Hz 3440x1440 Freesync monitor. This was the monitor in the Vega bundles... Yeah, and AMD FINALLY fixed FreeSync on the CF791 recently (after almost a year). With the mining craze, AMD should have increased production to meet increased anticipated demand, right? No? That's on them. See, I can actually buy a GTX1070, GTX1080, or GTX1080Ti, for inflated but reasonable prices. How exactly was AMD supposed to increase production on Vega? They're not 'suppos...

Re: Vega Meta Analysis

Why Vega is a Failure with a capital F: 1) You won't be able to buy one anywhere near MSRP for months. Unless you've spent tons of dough on a FreeSync display, it makes sense to just grab Pascal. 2) Power consumption is stupid for the performance. (Lesser) Enthusiasts sites are recommending that bu...

Re: New EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM announced

Price is good, sharpness looks good on the various 5Ds samples out there, longitudinal CA looks well controlled... Probably not as sharp as the Art lens, but should hang with the rest and adds IS and potentially fast AF. The 85/1.8 USM is the standard here, though- if it's that fast, that would be a...

...it's amusing that the exact same people who attack that position are the first ones to run around crowing about how DX12 will make Vega beat a GTX-1080 at some indeterminate point in 2018 or 2019. Funny thing about competition- Nvidia was doing just fine competing with themselves. And surprisingly, they've been keeping pricing under control in the process. You say that. But had Vega 64 actually given the 1080 Ti a run for it's money. Or even definitively outperformed the GTX 1080, and was re...
