Re: Please Suggest Pre Built Quad SLI or Higher Desktop PC for Folding

I think you should consider 'learning' to build. The mechanical skills start and stop essentially at plugging in cables and turning philips head screws. The intellectual skills include doing the research on the parts and understanding build order; the latter is obvious when you have the parts in you...

Re: DAC+Amp Suggestion

RE: balanced- it doesn't make much sense for most purposes, but I have found that noise can be introduced around PCs in a variety of ways and a balanced path pretty much eliminates them. Alongside optical output to a balanced DAC to get ground separation as well, at the very least the analog signal ...

Re: 10 Gbps switch for a condo

It's the DACs that get picky the most; I grabbed custom ones to do a 10Gbps trunk between a used Aruba switch and a new HPE switch.

But it's definitely cheaper than 10Gbase-T :)

If you could actually get Ryzen Pro APUs, then you'd be fine with one- but AMD isn't selling those to anyone but OEMs AFAIK.

Re: Can't Initilize New 4TB SSD

Check the mobo for a newer UEFI build, check the drive for a newer firmware, check that the SATA cable is actually well seated (or try another one.) (I'd guess the cable.) Actually this. Simple, but sometimes the cables just go bad and cause wonky/inexplicable behavior. Also, if that doesn't help, ...

Re: Upgrading internet connection, time to upgrade firewall -- recommendations?

Damn, missed all the fun- but running an ER-4 here, for now, with 200/20. I plan on messing with pfSense or OPNsense on the edge and have an appliance for it (J3160-based), but like having a solid, purpose-built setup that I can rely on. Also, it'll probably handle a 1Gbps symmetrical connection if ...

At the very least, it's nice to know that Nvidia's move to support Adaptive Sync over DisplayPort won't make these FreeSync monitors suck any more than they already do ;)

Re: NETGEAR and the R6700 Nighthawk - Buyer beware

I get that, but your statement was that you sett up 3 devices and then wouldn't recommend Ubiquiti due to a 4th device that wasn't involved in your setup. The logic didn't flow. Now if the edgerouter was a fall-back plan due to your comments about IPS on the USG line, I get that, but you didn't say...

Re: NETGEAR and the R6700 Nighthawk - Buyer beware

Didn't have any issue setting up an Edgerouter 4, UAP-AC-Pro, and for a while, the POE 8-port switch, but given the performance limitations of the Unifi Gateway and lack of integration of other lines, it's hard to recommend Ubiquiti. I’m confused, where Does the USG come into play? Over the Edgerou...

ME has gotten better in terms of gameplay each iteration; the first was a bit awkward all around, in terms of movement but also especially in terms of ability progression and difficulty scaling. Two and Three are similar, and much more fluid, while ME Andromeda adds interesting dynamics. But the sto...

IBM owns Redhat- but part of that is their established customer base, which have invested in Redhat themselves and thus are included as 'stakeholders'.

Doing 10Gbase-T right now, with a FreeNAS box and desktop currently hooked up. I've seen >750MB/s in some cases, but 300MB/s-500MB/s typical to/from a 4x 6TB Ironwolf ZFS stripe/mirror setup. I'd like to bring the disk count to eight, but I don't actually need the space, and well, those drives are e...

Finally pulled the trigger on a QNAP TS-453-Be with 4GB ram. Looking at Amazon in the US, that extra 2GB of RAM seems to come with a US$100 premium- assume that wasn't the case further north? Also noted that QNAP produces a combo 2x NVMe (2x PCIe 2.0) + 10Gbase-T card for this thing, which is prett...

To answer JBI's question on the 8TB Seagates after shucking: I've kept my four in a RAIDZ1 array, using it for backups- it's worked quite well for that. It's a Veeam (free edition) backup target for all machines, something I've actually had to use already, and I use rcopy on the FreeNAS VM to keep a...

Still missing Samsung and Qualcomm, and that excludes two very large mobile SoC makers.

Otherwise putting it to use will be fairly quick, particularly if they can use non-dedicated hardware for acceleration i.e. OpenCL.

I'd recommend looking into what 'supported' means. Generally we don't worry about motherboard and GPU pairings, so a Quadro complain...

I don't do a huge amount of video editing. Re: Comments pls on 4K Video editing build

I'd roll with JAE's suggestion for memory, and other than switching to a 'Pro' Samsung for scratch, keep the OS on the cheap SATA SSD (be it on M.2 or SATA ports). NVMe does nothing for OS and apps, much as we'd like it to- you want faster there, you're going to pay (way) up for Intel's Optane drive...

Kyle loves hating on Nvidia. Not that Nvidia hasn't done plenty in the past to be hostile to consumers, but Kyle zeroes in on them for some odd reason more than any other company. 1: I was thinking so for a while, but looking at the TR 8700K review and how much the 4790K lags behind the 8700K, I expect that all the little tweaks since Haswell have added up. Enough so that I would feel odd slapping a 2080Ti into my current rig. Do note that the linked benchmarks are at stock,...

Re: New Platform: Threadripper or Skylake-X

Three basic responses: 1. You're not going to get much faster than the 4770 for gaming. You might get a little bit, at best; to get the most, you'd need to go 9900K. I know that you excluded the consumer socket CPUs, and the 9900K certainly isn't going to get you significantly more performance at 4k...
