Re: Intel ARM -- I mean MIPS -- Chip CONFIRMED!

Off topic (don't feel like getting into the "ZOMG Intel ARM -- I mean MIPS" crap), but I found it rather fascinating that MIPS (well, nanoMIPS) is likely to find a home in smartphones. Link Looks like they're attempting to position it as a real-time communications co-processor (not the ma...

Re: About Silicon Lottery

You can run your CPU at throttling temps day in and day out at 100% load for years...it's not going to die. Well, yeah. My Sandy Bridge has been doing just that for the last 6 years. The difference, is that the IHS is sealed on tighter, and my Sandy Bridge uses solder, not the cheap TIM they switch...

Re: About Silicon Lottery

Yeah, reversing the radiators should reduce CPU/GPU temps a bit, but will probably make everything else (RAM, chipset, VRMs, storage devices...) run hotter by raising the air temp inside the case. Again, unless you're planning to OC or otherwise push the CPU really hard (100% load 24x7), I don't se...

Re: About Silicon Lottery

While I'd rather have the CPU run hotter than all those other things, I can think of one reason it can be better to suck rather than blow. It makes it really easy to dust the radiators because you could even vacuum them from outside the case, without even having to open it up. Okay, then. Since you...

Re: Best 24 port managed switches

Big fan of Extreme Networks switches. They're stable and really easy to manage. They've made some bold moves the last few years in purchasing Enterasys Networks, Zebra Networks Wireless business (which was previously Motorola WiFi), and more recently Avaya's wired network business, and Brocades Dat...

Re: Best 24 port managed switches

I've been thinking of picking up a used enterprise 24-port switch off sleezbay. There is a Quanta model that sells cheap and a Dell, both with 2 10GbE ports. Are those any good? I'm guessing the quality is better than customer grade. But I'm no switch expert. Edit: The quanta looks sketchy from rev...

Re: Best 24 port managed switches

A fiber/ethernet transceiver would provide electrical isolation, but that's getting a bit pricey. Totally. Losing a fiber convertor to lightning wasn't cheap (we'd sometimes have lightning strikes hit the burial cable). At one point, we tried used ethernet lightning surpressors, but they were worth...

Re: About Silicon Lottery

If you are not planning to overclock, you are WAAAY over-thinking this. Just buy a stock chip and use it as-is. I'm guessing I didn't explain my line of thinking well at all, or I'm just wrong no matter what. Basically, that KL PC is going to go on a microATX mobo, within either a Carbide 240 , a F...

Re: Question about possible microATX case with high airflow

I know nothing about 80mm Noctuas, didn't even know they made any. :) The 140mm Noctua fans I use in my HAF-X are actually on the loud side until I undervolt them, I wasn't conservative enough with the base RPM speeds when I got them, and they don't become background noise until around 850rpm. Huh....

Re: About Silicon Lottery

I just delidded i7-7700(no-k). My experience matches up whats on better parts of web. The TIM already inside CPU is pretty good. What improvement you will see is due to fact that when you use your own sealant to secure IHS, it will lower it/bring closer to CPU. You wont see big jump unless you go t...

Re: Dumb idea/thought experiment

Doctor (Thaddeus) Venture, if you knew how much Netscreen/Juniper stuff costs, even compared to Cisco, you'd know you were right. Juniper has a long heritage of using (highly) custom ASICS to do a variety of nominally software-based network tasks. Other than cost, it's a good solution to get superi...

Re: Xbox One X

Like everyone else has said, if you check out Digital Foundry, the Xbox One X can totally do 4K. It requires devs making the time and effort to take advantage of it (and I think MS has supplied certain studios with a performance analyzer tool, to help hit the magic numbers). That said, for all the n...

Re: About Silicon Lottery

Why would you buy from them if you are going to keep it at stock anyway? Keep in mind the 7700K runs at 4.2Ghz by default, it is the 7700 that defaults to 3.6Ghz. Speaking for longevity's sake having them replace the TIM means you may have to re-replace it yourself down the road depending on how lo...

Re: Question about possible microATX case with high airflow

I just say upfront that I think you will be hard pressed to find an 80mm fan that moves a lot of air but isn't loud. Even the 80mm Noctua's? That sucks... :/ [ Now, for the threadripper build, I'm likely going to get either another HAF 932 Advanced, or a HAF X: My old tower is a HAF-X, didn't even ...

Re: Question about a monitor, and a cheap video card

Even a bargain basement GPU should be able to drive a 2K monitor these days. My primary desktop has a craptastic GT 720 (no gaming, so I opted for something cheap with passive cooling when I put this build together), driving a 1920x1080 primary display plus a pair of equally craptastic 1280x1024s f...

Re: Question about a monitor, and a cheap video card

@Chrispy_ OK, I may be completely misunderstanding this, but even some of the servers that offered ESXi as an option I had looked at (long before threadripper launched) included a graphics card. I know ESXi uses a CLI, since I ignored VMware's advice, and installed it in Workstation 12.5 Pro, just f...

Re: Dumb idea/thought experiment

Well, at the risk of zombifying this thread, it turns out I wasn't completely off the mark. While HBM2 and HMC are still really expensive, I was doing a little research for someone who wanted to know why certain models of Cisco routers couldn't be emulated (long story short, even though the 1921/194...

Go to your local welding supply shop and ask for welding glasses in Grades 12-14, or make yourself a camera obscura out of 2 pieces of cardboard. The backers for legal pads work really well. About Silicon Lottery

I've seen Silicon Lottery mentioned here a few times, in regards to them de-lidding Intel CPUs, applying better TIM, and binning the CPUs. When I was looking at i7-7700K Kaby Lakes, I noticed that the prices Silicon Lottery charge for a binned 4.2GHz chip they worked on wasn't that much more than bu...

Re: Question about a monitor, and a cheap video card

What OS are you running the management client from? If it's the ESXi Embedded Host Client, then any GPU will do as long as it has the output you need. If you're running windows get yourself a basic RX 550 for the Eyefinity support, if you're running Linux get yourself a GT 1030 for the Proprietary ...

Re: Question about possible microATX case with high airflow

You'd need a lot of fan mounts, and mATX cases rarely have enough. I've never personally seen an mATX case that could quietly cool high-end components, which is why I still use a tower. Things like the Hadron Hydro are neat and look good on paper, but loud as hell under any sort of load. These are ...

I also have vSphere (including the Client), which I can use the mgmt webpage to configure ESXi, SecureCRT to SSH into the VMs running in ESXi, as well as monitoring software I'm not expecting to use the monitor/gfx card exclusively for ESXi, it's for the other stuff. well, the gaming performance with Threadripper isn't all that great, and I was wanting to devote that to be just a workstation anyway. Some of the newer games don't run run all that great on my current PC, so I'm leaning to the i7 7700K Kaby Lake (speaking of, has anyone here used Silicon Lottery to...

Re: Question about a monitor, and a cheap video card

I never bothered to keep up with VMWare after workstation 10-ish... But... you barely need a monitor for ESXi as its not a typical OS. During install it would be nice, other wise you do everything remotely with management tools. Unless you plan to pass through a GPU to each VM and that is what you ...

Re: Question about a monitor, and a cheap video card

One other thing to consider, see which board is recommended for running KVM/QEMU for GPU passthrough. Technically, not ready for prime time. Not for sake of using Linux instead of ESXi but rather, it might be good indication of which is better "Threadripper" class board. If its doing devi...

Re: Question about a monitor, and a cheap video card

You only need to splash out on an gaming/workstation card like a 560 or 1050 for 3440x1440 and above, all the cheaper cards will happily do 2560x1600 and below. A GT710 is often a good combination of cheap, only a bit ancient and not too much slower than integrated graphics, but even the 5450/R5 23...

Question about possible microATX case with high airflow

My current gaming rig/office PC has an old i7-2600K Sandy Bridge, with an SSD for the boot drive, an HD7950 Radeon, and a bunch of multi-TB HDDs crammed into a HAF 932 case. It's served me well thus far, but I'm thinking about upgrading to a smaller mATX case, with a i7-7700K Kaby Lake (unless I wai...
