Re: Let's talk Surface Book / Win 10

I don't own a Surface Book but I with with a lot of Microsfties who do, so I'll parrot their opinions. The general gist is that if you can afford it and find value in the hybrid design, they're a great choice. There were a ton of crippling issues when they were first launched, but most of those have...

Re: Windows falls as a development platform, OS X rises

But really, outside of pretentious artsy, hipster "prosumer" markets, OSX (just like iOS) has no place in the professional tech world. It's a good thing your anecdotal opinion is jut as factually based as the data in the survey, eh? I work in enterprise IT in NYC and MacBook Airs/Pros are...

Re: Buying a Mac tonight

The ideal behind me trying out LFS is so I can learn more about Linux. I am far from being an expert in Linux. LFS is a great idea; I'd just recommend doing it in Virtual Box first. You'll have far fewer driver issues and you can snapshot the install at points in time to roll back to if you cock so...

Could also just be that Apple's engineers just have a lot more experience with TSMC's process since they've used them for every other A-series chip I believe.

I bit the bullet and had my car repaired. It wasn't cheap, but I wasn't ready to put down on a car I wasn't totally in love with. I'm going to wait a few more months with a bigger down payment and likely get the WRX STI LTD that I really wanted. I think this is very wise. Why spend a lot of money o...

Re: Car recommendations

Interesting point. Subaru head gaskets are very well known to some circles for all the wrong reasons, but it seems like they're less of a problem with a new and/or well maintained car. IIRC that applied to the N/A versions of the EJ22/25, and not the WRX or WRX STI motors and certainly not the FA20...

I own a 2015 Subaru WRX STI Launch edition and I can give the WRX a solid recommendation if you want a sporty, not slow, practical car. I've owned turbo Subarus since 2004 and they've been very reliable and good cars to own. For me the extra money for the fun car is totally worth it because amortize...

Yes, the simplest explanation occurred to me right off the bat. Then I read Richard Huddy's assertion there will be no DX12 for Win7. Then, that explanation no longer held water for me. It's true that GM104 on 28nm is low risk, but it's also being released off-schedule for nVidia. They usually rele...

Re: nVidia's latest ploy

Did the simplest explanation occur to you? That nVidia targeted GM104's debut at 28nm years ago because it was the lowest risk option, and that releasing a new class leading product for the holiday season helps sales volume? And the $330 price tag on the GTX 970 isn't nVidia being generous, it's nVi...

I have been debating with myself over a new router. It looks like the Netgear Nighthawk and the Asus RT-AC68U are the top contenders. Re: Itchy feet - news on Broadwell?

I would only wait for Broadwell if you want Iris Pro graphics, as Intel should be releasing a socketed desktop chip both unlocked and with Crystalwell/Iris Pro. I think that'll make for a pretty amazing HTPC, but it'll likely be costly.

IIRC, the SG08 (I own one) was designed to dissipate 500W of heat, so any sane overclock shouldn't be limited by the case's ability to expel heat. Haswell doesn't overclock all that well, so it's up to you if there's value in the K-series CPU.

The real answer is there can be big performance improvements by moving to the ARM v8 instruction set, not to mention the ~!64BITS!~ marketing angle as well as future p...

Yup, even with nothing else running, if you just go back to dashboard for a second it will unload the game. If you are running other things too, it will push everything out of RAM. Yeah, that behavior always annoyed me with my iPad 3. It's not a deal breaker, but I'd really appreciate an extra 1GB ...
