Re: First Time AD Roll-Out - Planning, Should I?

This is stupid paranoia, but because it was a problem in the ESX3 days, I actually have a dedicated physical domain controller in the head office running those roles (there's another virtual DC at that site too). I believe it is much better now but ESX used to have real-time-clock issues that playe...

Yes, more explanation is needed on the desktop-OS-as-production-server aspect of this.  Or heck, the business-environment-without-WSUS aspect, if we're going to go there.

I've been looking at dipping my toe into the world of CNC machining, and most of the higher-quality stepper/servo drivers for those machines still want a parallel port on the controller.  This might be a nice fit for those applications as well.

Have you considered switching to a phone/carrier combo that supports WiFi calling? I've been very satisfied with Project Fi so far, but it looks like Verizon does support it on certain devices if you'd rather not switch.

Re: NAS Backup Best Practices with CryptoLockers in mind

Ours is a much larger office, but our NAS is actually ZFS-based with its last storage tier as an Amazon S3 instance. It presents ZFS snapshots to Windows clients as VSS copies. Both those and traditional VSS shadow copies from our old Windows file server have shown resistance to CryptoLocker in our ...

Re: NAS Backup Best Practices with CryptoLockers in mind

Doesn't make any difference -- I think everything except the very first version of this crap can operate with admin access or privelege escalation. I have to give my users local admin because reasons (*grumble*), but the last guy who got infected didn't have it, because I don't trust him to operate ...

Re: NAS Backup Best Practices with CryptoLockers in mind

We've been hit a few times. So far, nothing's been able to nuke remote VSS shadow copies, which makes recovering from a Crypto-whatever infection a fairly straightforward process that doesn't require going to tape: 1) Identify the infected machine by checking owner permissions on the affected files,...

Re: Laptop or tablet for University

I'd bet lots of money against any laptop, new or refurb, that is available for $400 functioning for four years of college student-level abuse. A tablet may last longer thanks to the lack of hinges, but it'll be useless for essay assignments, and you can count on a worn out battery within two years o...

Re: Google Fiber Coming To San Francisco!

Speaking of Google Fiber, I was interested to know the modem/hardware being used, and found this page . It looks like all of the units are modem+router combos, even the "Mini Network Box" (GFMN100) used on non-gigabit plans, which only has a single port. Apparently all the boxes also have...

Re: Legal squabble over copyrighting the law

There's a bit of mordant lawyer humor that says no one can really know what a new law means until some judge somewhere puts his/her thoughts in an opinion. The printed version of VSA, as well as the paid version of Lexis/Nexis, carries these annotations and it is to these annotations I refer far mo...

Re: New, from the company that brought you SuperFish

Based on my own experience, I'd say medium- to large-sized companies re-image their PCs, while smaller ones might not, since they probably don't have a standardized system configuration, dedicated IT staff, or a volume license for Windows/Office/etc. To my eternal frustration, my company of ~150 do...

Looks solid; HSF and PSU clearance is the big issue in the M1, but it looks like you've done your homework. Mine cools decently with just the GPU (780 with the reference blower) and the fan for the Corsair AIO CLC I'm using, set up to exhaust. Enjoy the M1, by the way. It's a really fun case that's ...

Yeah playing alpha 2.0 is the first time I've been legitimately excited about playing the game. My system isn't good enough, but it was cool anyway. Informed speculation right now is that the low performance in the Universe portion of the game is down to network issues or some other bottleneck. Peo...

Alpha 2.0 is the first time that I've really seen the promise of the game be delivered on in a meaningful way. My gut instinct would be to agree, but I've done the research and basically nobody recommends ECC for Revit, even though on more complex projects it uses quite a bit of RAM. My guess is that because of the way Revit files ares structured and synchronized, the corruption risk is fairly low regardless...

I'm still ordering these as the workhorse systems for my architecture office. While the top spec M4800 is a powerful laptop it can't come close to well spec'ed Xeon based desktop workstations. Apple's PC offerings have really stagnated hardware-wise. It really does feel like apple is the only competent laptop manufacturer. Sad but true, at least on the consumer side. Dell does show some signs of the good stuff filtering down to the regular product lines, so maybe it'll change. Samsung's products look good but I've never actually seen one. Skyla...

The way I see it, tablets and smartphones are *absolutely* pushing desktop PCs out of the low end of the market -- principally home users who passively comsume media on their devices and maybe bang out an email once every day or two. For those people, a desktop PC, or even a laptop, was like driving...

Any idea if I clone and plug the new drive with the same cable/channel, will Windows still give it the same drive letter or does it know it is a new drive and not assign a new letter? Like I said it varies. Some of the "clone" tools I've used that run while the system is online required t...

Re: Upgrading a drive with redirected folders

Any reason why you couldn't clone the drive and then swap old for new? I've had mixed results depending on the cloning tool used, but Macrium Reflect and any of the Linux-based offline cloning tools have solved the issue for me without drive letter drama. I know I've also resorted to registry hackin...

Business customers. If I want an end-user machine that's covered by a long-term, next-business day service contract, I can go to Dell, HP, or Lenovo. HP's prices are absurd, and Lenovo's quality is in a tailspin. Their business sales and marketing arm is at decent, at least. Not great, but passable....

What model of SSD? The symptoms you're describing sound quite a bit like the issues I've had with Sandforce SF-2281-based drives.

EDIT: Reading comprehension fail -- that's a Barefoot controller. Still, the symptoms are very alike.
