Re: Cheap file server?

I'll throw a vote in for Freenas. There is a lot of info about setup/characteristics and it does a lot. iSCSI, CIFS, NFS, FTP. And takes almost no hard drive space as well as run it off a flash drive. I think you can run it as a livecd too.

It will also be beneficial with 2 AP's to make sure they are not operating on the same channel. IE 1 AP on channel 1 and 1 AP on Channel 11.

Dizik, I've noticed those problems to after a clean install of rc1 and haven't figured out an answer for that mess.

However, if I install beta2 and then upgrade using rc1 dvd from beta2 it runs fine. For whatever thats worth.

Im looking to get a new monitor but can decide between the 20in dell and the 24'' currently i have a 7800GT that i know wont be able to take the 1920 x 1200, I have an old fx5200 that runs my 24" at 1920 x 1200 just fine. However I dont play any games. I'd imagine your 7800gt would run it just fine...

How about getting an old PC and putting Smoothwall Linux on? It has a QoS add on and has a lot more capability than these router/switch combos. Oh yeah, and it's free, all you need is an old pc lying around. There is a small learning curve, but if you've dealt with routing and QoS in the past you co...

However, number 2, if you start up mce and go to
settings
tv
recorder
recorder storage.

It is here where you can change where the recordings go.

Why don't you pick up a LiveCD and just try it out. You can get all that functionality you are asking for in a livecd. If you get things botched up just restart the computer and try again. You can get Ubuntu, SuSe, PCLinux, there are a ton of them out there. They have a lot of the functionality of a...

XP MCE

I currently watch and record shows using Win XP Media Center Edition. Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-150MCE video card for input. It has coax, rca style jacks, and svideo in. It's a great card for Windows MCE. I also use the Microsoft Remote and Receiver which comes with the IR transmitter, and have had no pro...

I've got the 7000 alcu. It's very quiet even running at max speed, and with cool and quiet enabled temps range from 28c to 30c and get up in the mid 40's under load. This will probably be the only cpu cooler I use from now on if it'll fit.

Programming

If at all familiar with linux I'd recommend, either Fedora or Mandrake (both free for download), and GCC (also free) for compiling. And the book "How to Program c++ by Deitel and Deitel. It's pretty easy to understand the concepts they have. Just go through the first 5 or so chapters and you'll be c...

Yes, Mandrake and Suse are available for free. Check out distrowatch.com to find other linux distros, and they have links to the iso files. Actually I believe most distros are free, I can think of only a few that you actually have to pay for. Good Luck
