Is your question really "When will the first consumer NBase-T routers be available?" There are several commercial options available now.

Re: Headphones on a Plane

Planes are a perfect use case for active noise canceling headphones. The reason is that they do a really good job at canceling out low tones and not such a good job at higher pitches. If your friend will be traveling in business class or first class, a good pair of isolating headphones is totally su...

So, the PC is currently plugged into a switch? If so, you can look at the mac table on the switch and match it the PC's MAC.

I've heard lots of good things about their AirFiber24 units. I have had a couple at my site to connect a short 3/4 mile span, but I haven't had time to get the wiring ran to them. Hopefully I'll have some good things to report later this year.

Not all large corporations are that way at all. I work for one of the biggest on the planet, and I've never been yelled at. I've been here almost 10 years. Find a company that has principles that prevent that kind of crap (and at least try to hold people to them) and never look back. It's not all ra...

Re: Finally upgrading from CRT

The manufacturer doesn't matter much. The panel type is what's most important. Get an IPS panel. They have the best color accuracy and viewing angles. More specifically, I'd get an 8 bit IPS panel and avoid the 6 bit ones. 6 bit panels (6 + 2 bits gained by dithering = 8 bits advertised) will advert...

I've used Milestone's Xprotect software for years at work. We're up to around 70 cameras now. Most of them are 5 MP which means > 1080P. Milestone offers a free version. It only supports up to 8 cameras and will only retain video for 5 days, but it's solid software. You can grab a copy here.

Fiber patch cable storage/organization

Hello Gerbils, I'm growing tired of the lack of organization for storage my fiber patch cables, and to a lesser extent, my copper cables. Right now, the fiber cables are in ziplock bags labeled with a sharpie (SC/LC 1M, ST/LC 2M, etc) which are all stuffed into a cardboard box. I have plenty of file...

For such a small operation with no IT staff, a cloud solution is going to be the most reliable and automated way to get good backups. I can vouch for Backblaze. It works as advertised and is very cheap.

Re: Virtualization Server advice

If you know that the number of VMs will stay fairly low, it may be cheaper to buy multiple Windows Server Standard licenses. Each standard license entitles you to run 2 VMs. A standard license is around 1/5 the price of datacenter, so you could license 10 VMs via 5 Standard licenses for around the s...

Re: Virtualization Server advice

I think 4 GB per VM is overkill for what you are going to be running. 2GB will probably still be overkill for most of them. We have many 2008 VMs running great with 1 GB RAM. It all depends on what the server is doing. 1) Host OS - I have the most experience with VMWare, so I'd throw ESXi on it. Dep...

I've been using BackBlaze. It's $5/mo if billed monthly or cheaper if you pay for a year or 2 at a time. That gets you unlimited storage for one PC for that amount. I've been very happy with them for 2 years I've been using them. They open-sourced the blueprint for their storage "pods" (se...

Re: Single 2008 R2 RDS Cal License

Generally, after MS releases a new server OS, you can only buy licenses for the new OS, but you have downgrade rights to the older version(s). I'm pretty sure CALs work the same way. If that's the case, you can buy a 2012 RDS CAL and use it as a 2008 R2 RDS CAL. I don't work for MS and I'm not a law...

I think Dreamhost will only a viable option if I can get Red5 working on 1GB RAM. Sounds like plans for tonight are settings up VMs to test FMS on < 4GB RAM and to try Red5 once again. The results of that testing could change my requirements quite a bit.

Deploying Linode's stock 64-bit CentOS 5.6 image + available updates should get you to something that is functionally equivalent to the last 5.x release, which ought to be fine for your purposes. Re: Virtual Private Server Suggestions

What's your budget for hosting? How much traffic do you expect? How much storage do you need? Budget is $50/mo. Traffic will only be around 100 GB/mo. I only need enough storage for the FMS install, so 10 GB should be plenty. Since Adobe Media Server requires at least 4GB of RAM (WTF?), you would n...
