Re: Goodbye TR, it was a great run

I was a long time lurker, and I learned so much from this site. Like 2003-2012, I learned everything about building my own PCs from this amazing place, back in the day when Damage was running the show. Slowly but surely my tastes changed (I stopped building PCs, quit gaming, moved to a much more exc...

Re: Winter weather

It's been very hot here, getting into the 80s every day. And it's been that way for weeks. This is the hottest winter I have ever seen. It does not bode well for hurricane season. The Gulf is going to be boiling by July. This comment is not correct, in fact, ACE (Accumulated Potential Energy) acros...

Re: Winter weather

I agree that could be the cause... but until it happens several years in a row, we can't tell whether it is indeed a real trend or just a statistical fluke. I'd argue that we have been seeing it, in varying forms, for at least the past couple of years - the "Snowpocalypse" on the US east ...

Re: Winter weather

Global warming. (Seriously. Higher average temperatures means more energy in the system, which means more volatility, which means unseasonable and otherwise chaotic weather - of all types.) Actually this statement is not correct at all. In fact, from a pure potential energy standpoint, this winter ...

Grand Theft Auto 5 Trailer

Looks like it is in San Andreas again. I am guessing it will remain on the PS3/Xbox360 based on the graphics, but they do look better than GTA4.

Re: Joplin, MO tornado

Unfortunately another outbreak is about to begin this afternoon. A high risk has been issued by the Storm Prediction Center. http://spc.noaa.gov/products/outlook/day1otlk.html High risk severe days are very rare. Yesterday was one and April 27th outbreak across Alabama was another. The North Carolin...

Re: Joplin, MO tornado

Looks like we're fine, though the storms are still pretty strong east of us. Also, El Reno, Piedmont, & Goldsby had a lot of damage I was watching the large El Reno storm intently today. Here is a 3d RADAR volume scan of that storm. Note the flanking line "feeding" into the large meso...

Re: Joplin, MO tornado

Unfortunately, today will be another busy severe outbreak across the mid MS Valley and lower OH Valley. Just what the Mississippi River needs right now, more torrential rains. Thankfully many of the rivers/streams/tributaries are on the downtrend. http://www.srh.noaa.gov/srh/ssd/mapping/RFC/ Today ...

Re: Joplin, MO tornado

So basically, anywhere in the yellow section is a low chance? Relatively speaking. You could probably draw another 150-mile color boundary around the edge of the light green area where tornadoes are not usually strong but do occur from time to time. Here in Colorado we see funnel clouds and small t...

Re: Winter weather

I now pronounce this thread over for spring! 75 here with thunderstorms in the forecast. The odds of the midwest getting another winter blast are pretty low. Perhaps Hance might have a few more storms left in the mountains? Not yet. The atmosphere is about to eject a serious IPV anomaly over the pl...

Spectacular Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) in Minnesota

A great video of the spectacular Northern Lights show over northern MN last nite. A friend of a friends shot this with his Canon 5D. Watch it in HD.

Re: Winter weather

For anyone in southern MN/Twin Cities into southern and central WI and even into SD there is a legitimate threat for thundersnow and thunderpellets/thunderZR. This storm is going to be ripping across parts of MN/SD in terms of wicked snow. I am pretty excited.

Re: Winter weather

Well, it seems as if Kansas is inching its way towards spring. The past few days we've had high temperatures of over 50 and the forecast says more of the same. Nearly all of that 14-ish inches we got last week are gone. Woooohooooo! btw it's supposed to be over 70 here tomorrow. I'd be surprised if...

Big winter storm coming for MN/WI/SD and parts of MI/IA/NE. Going to be a fun one with a slight chance for thundersnow in portions of southern MN and into WI. Impressive and unique storm in terms of the height field setup.

Re: Twitter suspends Ubertwitter and Twidroyd mobile apps.

According to the Tech Crunch article, Twitter claims some sort of copyright infringement on the word Tweet, so Tweetdeck could be next. I just use Twitter's official app for iOS. I find all this rather interesting. Perhaps twitter is angry that others are making money off their own idea while they ...

Twitter suspends Ubertwitter and Twidroyd mobile apps.

Big news for those who use either application. Blackberry users are especially hosed since ubertwitter is far superior to anything else--and the pickings are generally slim. http://techcrunch.com/2011/02/18/twitter-suspends-ubermedia-clients-ubertwitter-and-twidroyd-for-violating-policies/ http://ma...

Re: Question about Civ 5 performance

agreed with above; I'm thinking of bringing my RAM to 8 gigs. It's a horribly inefficient game. Addictive as hell though. I'm running a core i7 930 with 12 GB DDR3 1600 RAM and it still gets slow towards the end. My brother is playing with a core 2 quad and 4 gigs of DDR2 800 RAM and is not much sl...

Also, RAM is a key. This game eats RAM, especially in the latter stages. My 4 GB's of RAM become an issue and it gets downright laggy and unplayable due to RAM becoming overloaded. Sometimes I need to restart the game to get it playable again (before RAM is overloaded again after playing for a whil...

Re: Question about Civ 5 performance

Civ 5 turn times are definitely longer than Civ 4. I have an E8400 Wolfdale @ 3.6 ghz, and the turns aren't bad until in the later ages when more is going on. There are some performance threads at civfanatics.com that discuss the issue. From what I have garnered, even though Firaxis claims the game ...
