Re: Blizzard + GoG = Diablo 1 re-release

I just played the HD mod a bit, and it fixes most of what I had a problem with in the stock game. Worth the install if you are replaying the game.

Re: Blizzard + GoG = Diablo 1 re-release

Diablo 1 has a lot of good concepts, but is just so unpolished compared to some of the hellfire mods and diablo2. Hellfire has the capability of highlighting loot, and that ability is sorely needed to make diablo even vaguely tolerable. I also wish blizzard would update the engine to use direct3d an...

Re: Crytek Raytracing demo real time on Vega 56.

Artists have to be "ported" to the new engine. Developers can develop new features, but if the artists don't move forward with them, then all is lost. Its a complicated political system of push and shove. The director of a game must be convinced that the new technology is worthwhile to pu...

Re: Crytek Raytracing demo real time on Vega 56.

So obviously I'm TL;DR but assuming this is actual ray tracing in a fully dynamic environment that doesn't suffer any noticeable performance penalty*, then the real issue is: Why the hell didn't the rocket scientists at AMD put out their miracle ray tracer in 2016 back when it would have been ahead...

Re: Crytek Raytracing demo real time on Vega 56.

I watched the Gamer's Nexus video (here it is: https://youtu.be/CuoER1DwYLY ) and took home what seems like a different conclusion than you did. When done properly, global illumination (GI) CAN look nearly identical to a ray traced scene, but it cannot do this in a dynamic environment. They demonst...

Crytek Raytracing demo real time on Vega 56.

Raytracing. Is it everything that Nvidia hyped RTX to be? Maybe? Maybe not. There has always been alternatives, and the real question is which method is more efficient, and whether or not there is any noticeable improvement. I honestly don't think there is any need for raytracing compared with moder...

Re: AMD Ryzen Mobile Issues

AMD's drivers are annoying, they install on versions of Windows 10 which they are not compatible with and then don't work properly, and I can find no published matrix of which are for which. Go by the dates. Whatever driver is earlier than the windows update will work, anything after will not work,...

Google how to force intstall the official AMD adrenaline drivers too. It's possible (done it with my 2700U) but if everything's running okay I'd leave it as AMD pledged to support Ryzen mobile directly at CES, promised support was due to start "Q1 2019". I keep getting the error that I ha...

I have a previous gen FX APU laptop, which is powerful enough to play 360 ports. The power settings are in the radeon control panel, last tab. You can control and view use info from there, unless the latest driver has removed it. Finding it in windows is not as convenient, and there are multiple loc...

Re: Decently priced USB Sound Card / DAC

Under Windows, as of Windows 7's launch a decade ago, DACs no longer require their own software or virtual surround. The device is presented to any application by the OS and the addition of any third party processing is usually* detrimental to the desired result of the original content creators. No...

Re: Decently priced USB Sound Card / DAC

Driverless DACs do nothing when it comes to providing any sort of software or virtual surround, which means you either buy one that does, or find some 3rd party software if you want that, and I find that concept worthless for gaming. Powered speakers don't need amps either. I wouldn't recommend buyi...

Graphics cards could use it if nothing else, on a consumer level. We wouldn't need as much video ram, but performance would still be highly driver dependent for smart caching.

Even if the leaks are true, it may not be a problem for Nvidia, certainly not the high end, but even the mid range, as I just watched a video that claims the 2070 is overpriced and could be discounted to match amd. They're just gouging for rtx, and could easily drop prices against a competitive card...

I'm kinda surprised that Bethesda/ID Software hasn't put up another teaser for Doom Eternal for the 25th anniversary. I'm not, considering the fans already know, and fallout was such a failure. it's still loads of fun. Same, I started with the shareware, and bought the sequel before ever owning the...

At the time, with the available compiler, we never saw more than 20% in the very best of case. And most of the time, for actual scenes running in actual games, we saw virtually no gains at all. I think the expose article is more worth a read, especially after that developer's POV blog. https://www.realworldtech.com/physx87/ Several point I think are pertinent. *PhysX was designed to run on a 32-bit 500 Mhz MIPS CPU, and was single precision by nature. *IMO, the PPU was like having a Raspbe...

Re: ASRock Reference Vega 56 for $340 worth it

I have a triple cooler Vega 56, with no noise issue, but you can use Global Wattman to lower power. There is a one stop shop button for "Power Save" which should lower consumption down to almost Nvidia levels, while I just leave mine on the default "balanced". Turbo is for the fo...

I don't know exactly what is causing your problem, but I have a hypothesis. Back in the day I had a 4870, and AMD released a hotfix beta driver that screwed up something with clockspeed and fan profiles, and my 4870 baked itself sitting on the desktop overnight. In particular, I think the memory fri...

If you're using analog Dolby is mostly irrelevant outside of upmixing, and it's merely a question of who has better surround software and component quality. Not really the problem I was trying to address. I was pointing to the fact that DX12 optimized games are no good on newer architectures. They're basically only good for a short period of time, meaning that future platforms are kinda better of with DX11 games. Several issues with this assumption. Ry...

Re: DX12 seems to be broken with Ryzen in a few situations

If games have less performance in DX12 using a Nvidia GPU _because_ the driver is offloading work to the CPU, then it would mean Ryzen is a weaker CPU. Which is clearly bullcrap when the AMD card does fine, and Nvidia runs faster in DX11. DX11 is inherently less efficient than DX12, FYI. This is a ...

Re: DX12 seems to be broken with Ryzen especially when using GeForce

It looks like some people are not reading the article. Nvidia is working fine in dx11. Dx12 however, clearly has problems when using Ryzen. At a guess I would say it’s down to Nvidia's DX12 implementation offloading items to the CPU in a way that's fine on Intel, but "not optimized" for Ry...

DS Lite is the best portable nintendo system for compatibility, battery life, and screen quality. It plays all of the old nintendo games, including the old gameboy games. There are also mods for rumble, ram expansion, and emulation. Cart mods like the Supercard can emulate nes, snes, and genesis.
