The new layout definitely needs work... a lot of work.

I miss the hot/new forum topics, hot comments, polls, and the like.

Re: Intel Performance Maximizer

Had to reinstall Windows after a complete deletion of every single drive's partition with diskpart's clean command to get IPM to work, and the results are... well, pretty conservative. It arrived at 4.7GHz. Testing with Prime95 seems to indicate that the 4.7GHz is for non-AVX; AVX drops down to 4.4G...

Re: What's your highest "power on hours" HDD?

17523 hours on the WD Black in my current desktop So far, none of the drives logged any errors. (I did RMA the WD Blue and HyperX Fury when they were brand-new, though, due to unusually early failure.) The 660p in comparison is the youngest drive, at 967 hours as of this writing. The WD Blue is 5462...

Intel Performance Maximizer

It's out now. It can be downloaded here. . Seems like 9900K(F) owners should use a different download compared to the rest, too. Will be testing it out tonight once I get home. Kind of want to see how good or bad it is at setting settings. Seems like you'll have to set your BIOS settings to bone sto...

Re: Anyone here using an Intel 660p SSD?

Have the drive in my rig now. It's been only a bit over 2 days, but it seems like I've gotten a significant speed increase in boot times (Windows no longer bothers to put the loading spinner and just immediately goes to login from a shutdown), and it sure felt like programs start a lot sooner, too. ...

Re: Anyone here using an Intel 660p SSD?

Thanks for the advice guys! After some consideration, I'm now waiting for a 512GB model to arrive at my office. Hopefully it won't take too much babysitting with the SSD Toolbox helping out. Ideas floating around what to do with the leftover drive...? Aside from selling it, of course. For reference:...

Anyone here using an Intel 660p SSD?

Been thinking of ditching the Fury in my rig due to low storage space and the 660p's insanely low price-per-GB and performance compared to SATA drives - am eying the 512GB model, though even 1TB seems possibly good. How's the drive going for longer-term owners? Since it's QLC, I'd like to know if th...

If someone can figure out how to run it on WinServer, I'd love to test out the 2xXeon 6130 machine here at work... This portable version should work on a recent version of Windows I actually used this version to test my Windows 8.1 laptop. Yeah, not moving to 10 on that one because of audio issues.

i5-9600K at 4.9GHz

2905 MT
499 ST
5.82x MT Ratio

Not bad considering the lack of thread count...

I'll add numbers for my laptop a bit later.

EDIT: Added numbers for i7-4700HQ on my laptop

1327 MT
273 ST
4.85x MT Ratio

Re: Let's take a look at the VP9 decoding performance of 20 different processors!

Don't hurt me! What is love? I think it's bitrate that's really important. Those old procs will be a lot less happy when given a 50Mbps file (basically UHD Bluray raws). And to complicate stuff further NVENC seems to be capable of partially accelerating video decode even on Kepler era cards. I reme...

Re: bought D80 4100 and it sits at 2300

Few things I can think of: 1. Update your BIOS to the latest possible. 2. See if the RAM works properly with everything in stock speed (Load Optimized Defaults > Memtest86 8.0 from Passmark Software with default settings (all tests for 4 passes) - do NOT use Memtest86+!) (This might be even more imp...

I still have a gargantuan tube of Arctic Cooling MX-2. It's simple, cheap, lasts forever, and works well enough I don't care. The last few degrees aren't worth the extra IMO. Aye. I've also been recommended the MX-2 and MX-4 from quite a few other friendly hardware Discord chats as a possible "...

Thermal paste (grease, TIM, whatever...) recs

As a continuation of the non-story of my no-POSTing motherboard, now I've managed to run out of all my good pastes - the bundled paste with the new cooler, and my old NT-H1 (apparently dried out or used up). At the moment, I'm now winging it with a very cheap, white CM MasterGel (not Pro, not Maker)...

Are you absolutely certain you don't have an extra case standoff that doesn't match up with a motherboard mounting hole? If that's what caused a ground out issue, it may come back if the motherboard flexes (e.g. due to thermal expansion). Nah, all the standoffs are all aligned with the mounting hol...

Try booting it outside the case, to rule out a ground-out issue. They can be intermittent... So that's what happened, hmm. Did one last test out of a case - and it booted normally. Re: How do I choose a motherboard?

Another good choice would be pretty much any of the current Gigabyte Aorus Z390 boards, such as the Z390 Pro Wifi I'm currently using. Pretty much all of them will happily do a 9900K justice; and it'd be overkill for the 9600K or 9700K - or anything else on the LGA1151v2 socket, for the matter. Good...

Silly question, is 4.9 Ghz your all-core turbo? My six core multiplier is 46x and I'm wondering if I can push it further. Yeaqh, 4.9 GHz for all six cores. Uncore ratio is still at 43x, though I've been increasing it in steps as of today. Also, I'm now running it at 1.31V due to an unexpected crash...

Re: Would better cooling help with high-frequency stability at the same voltage or lower?

Hmm... seems like I might have possibly mucked up a few things along the way, since the system appears to be sufficiently stable at 1.30V now that I've reset the BIOS settings and reconfigured the overclock. A 82C average is far more acceptable. There still won't be enough thermal headroom for 5GHz,...

Would better cooling help with high-frequency stability at the same voltage or lower?

After lots of wrangling in BIOS settings, I've managed to eke out a fully stable 4.9 GHz at 1.37V on a 9600K. The temperatures are quite high, though - it averaged 90 degrees Celsius. At least there's no thermal throttling, but now I'm wondering if a significantly better cooler than an aging H60 - a...

I'm in the market for a new case right now. I'll admit, I am not able to resist the temptation of these fancy tempered-glass side panels and their general design once you go past the "definitely budget" area. They just look too good to my eyes that I want it. I also want a case that will b...
