Re: 2 TR articles on FB, nothing on webpage

Afraid this habit of the bot posting 4 year + reviews to FB has resulted in me un-following TR on FB.

Don't imagine that's the desired outcome, but there you go.

Re: Remote management - what do I need?

This is a tough one without making some compromises. Even the route you're proposing with a Raspberry Pi has some issues, in that you'll have to leave the RDP port (3389) for your home machine visible to the entire internet if you wish to RDP directly to it. A much more secure option is a machine to...

Re: DisplayPort problems - artifacting

I've had DP cable issues with my 27" Dell 2560*1440 screen in the past - one of the cables I tried just reset the monitor constantly (as if it were switching resolutions), which was very strange. The cable previously worked ok with a 1920*1200 screen. Using the cable that Dell supplied with the...

Re: 1700X and ESXi madness

I sympathise with the need to save space, but yeah, I'm afraid it's not really a realistic option. Hyper-V for the host partition with other VMs running on top works reasonably well (I do that on my gaming PC for the occasional bit of tinkering), but you can't really have AD running "only some ...

Re: Need to replace AirPort Extreme setup.

Oh, I see. If I were to get 2 access points would that create 2 separate networks or would they create a single one? Also, is there a way for merging the network from my AirPort Extreme and the access point to act as one? It would create two separate networks with different SSIDs on different chann...

Re: Need to replace AirPort Extreme setup.

Just as an FYI (since I haven't seen it mentioned) - the Ubiquiti APs are exactly that - just wireless access points. They don't do any routing so you still need a router to connect the AP to - either one of Ubiquiti's routers or another one (or even one of the AirPorts, you could disable the WiFi ...

Re: Question about a NVMe SSD and shared PCI-E lanes

Provided there's a bit of airflow across the board, the lower most slot should be fine. If you're concerned, consider something like an EKWB heatsink for the NVMe drive (https://www.ekwb.com/shop/catalogsearch/result/?q=nvme) or if you're really worried about it, something like the kryoM.2 adapter c...

Re: Iimit voltage and keep "Cool and Quit" ? 1950X

Instead of setting the CPU voltage to either "AUTO" or a fixed value, select the Offset option and set the offset to (for example) +0.0010v (or however small an amount you can get). This means it won't add tons on at load, which modern motherboards seem to love doing. You could also check ...

Your CPU cooling setup is indeed doing the job it's supposed to do - the CPU isn't melting into a heap under load. Thanks for clarifying your setup, there hasn't been much detail of it. However I stand by my previous comments regarding your heatsink being inappropriate for the load you're putting it...

Leave your RAM voltage on AUTO for now. Experiment with lowering your POWER LIMIT. Thanks. i tried that with no luck. limit the power limit 1 to 65 W, leave ram AUTO, the max TDP is capped to 65w and power liimit hit is reported. whatever power limit I set, it will hit that when running intel extre...

Out of interest, what kinda Anti-Virus are you running? According to MS, some AV software makes unexpected kernel calls that can cause issues with the patch.

FWIW, that's how the ASUS UEFI works too. There is a dropdown for pre-set values and then an open box that you can type into. It takes a minute or two to get used to, but once you know it's there it can be pretty easy to get things set up properly. https://dlcdnimgs.asus.com/websites/global/product...

While I can understand having no control over the multiplier for that CPU, you should still have access to the voltage controls. I found my MSI Z370 Krait Gaming, if left set to "auto" on voltages, raised them a little higher than I'd like, even at stock. Set them all to what the motherboa...

Best option I've found so far is BuddyBackup, which seems to do most of what Crashplan peer-to-peer was doing, with the exc...

Any particular reason you're not using the M.2 slot on the board itself? What's happened is that by forcing PCI-E slot #3 into x4 mode, you've disabled SATA 5 and 6 - take a look at the Asus spec page (https://www.asus.com/uk/Motherboards/SABERTOOTH-Z170-MARK-1/specifications/) for the board: "...

Cisco's Meraki MDM solution - Systems Manager - can be used to manage upto 100 devices free. One of my colleagues in work uses it for his kid's iOS devices, seems fairly comprehensive. They use it to remotely disable apps if a child is misbehaving, and to monitor what's being done on the devices. ht...

Set Windows update to manual, then you can just update it when it suits you. Keeps the box happy, keeps you happy.

Ditto with AV, have it do scheduled scans or put in some exceptions for your media folders.

Re: Adding HDDs to Storage Pool w/SATA card?

MS Storage Pools are pretty much drive-and-controller agnostic - as long as Windows sees the drives, it doesn't matter what controller etc they're on. Should work fine, though as you've said, having a pool with 8 individual disks and no resilience of any kind is rather dangerous, if you use the enti...
