Re: The Tech Report forums got a big upgrade

I like the layout of the dark scheme but prefer the colorization of the Canvas scheme, I don't suppose we could have an option that combines the two? Aside from that I don't really have any real complaints, it's perfectly fine. Information density is rather low with the Canvas scheme on desktop but ...

Re: DailyTech dead?

Once AnandTech stopped pushing them I think they were living on borrowed time, not sure they ever built up much of a direct readership independent of them.
I read the odd article from them, but they never really seemed to offer anything a dozen other places didn't do better.

Much as I dislike the name, the product sounds very compelling if it were well implemented... which tends to be easier said then done given other services that have tried a similar take on fashion. Bra/shoe retailers have been alright with matching measurements to products, but other clothing retail...

NVidia's proprietary G-Sync works only with the few expensive monitors that have NVidia's proprietary chip built into the monitor. Dell doesn't put their brand on any of those. There is a separate adaptive synchronization option independent of GSYNC. Basically enables VSync if the frame rate is abo...

I think they have a very unique definition of 'fast'. That does not look as though it would be very fast by any conventional definition of the word.

You can't, the ability was removed with Haswell. The best you can do is set all cores to the max single core Turbo speed.

Re: Do you ever look at old stuff...

I do. I used to have some old benchmark programs from back in the early DX9 days that I would run when I got a new video card. It made for interesting study to realize where the companies were spending their time. I recall noticing that it seemed the 2D performance was dropping over the years. Unfo...

Superfetch, prefetch, defrag: turned off automatically? Um, not according to my registry. Unless Windows ignores it's own registry (could be, I dunno) I had to change those settings in the registry and in services. Turning of the hibernate file with powercfg: yeah, exactly! With Win7 Defrag Windows...

Upgrade and retail are more likely to go on old machines and the end user will expect their existing touch experience to work. Is there a retail version of windows 8 though? Is there even one planned? I admit, I jumped into the system builder version without looking much at the alternatives, since ...

Why not pay a bit more and get a Korean 27" 2K led monitor? Personally I'd have a lot more faith in the image quality, and trouble free operation of either of the above then some random Korean model of unknown make. you're also sacrificing features relative to the Dell, some of which are very ...

Unless you have a fair amount running in the background at the same time you're playing the game then system RAM shouldn't be a big factor, few games are even going to touch 2GB of system memory leaving 2GB left over. And if need be much of the memory used by those background tasks can be shuffled o...

Yeah, screw that. Definitely contact them. I had XFX do something similar, (maybe even a bit worse). I did an RMA for a 9800GT and they replaced it with a Radeon 5750. I contacted them, and they wouldn't do anything. Never buy from them again. I'd have been pretty happy with that, faster card plus ...

Re: VS 11 Express wont support "desktop" apps :(

This will have a major impact on the open source community, many applications have relied upon having a free VisualStudio variant to develop for, this makes it a LOT more expensive and difficult to develop desktop applications moving forward. That's really a not so subtle hint for developers to star...

Re: New GPU-Z Feature: ASIC Quality

My Gigabyte GTX 460 purchased just after launch has an ASIC quality of 43.1%, one of the lowest I've seen. VCore is a pretty typical .975V, it does overclock fairly poorly though 820MHz. So that could be indicative of the lower quality ASIC. Counter intuitively, it does run extremely cool however co...
