Re: SO-DIMMS for Everything?

While this isn't a bad idea it would require a lot of motherboard redesigning, both for the smaller traces and the need for horizontal space where today the space taken up is vertical. Could be rough for 8-channel workstation boards. I guess the slots could be redesigned as well to not need the reta...

Re: Video card with 6x or 8x mini-HDMI ports?

Matrox do a C900 model that provides 9 HDMI outputs, although they only support up to 1920x1200 each. http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/graphics_cards/c-series/c900/ That's probably not Matrox's fault. IIRC early revisions of HDMI only ever supported 1920x1200 maximum. Along with the other...

Re: Retro console gaming

I was thinking of a 1080p 27" monitor due to what should be lower input latency. I've got the SNES Classic connected to my PC monitor right now and the input latency is basically undetectable. I attached it to my main TV and the latency is much more pronounced. Uh oh. You know, it suddenly occ...

Re: Windows 10 Fall Update Build 1709

First casualty: The Fall Update has borked the display driver on my HTPC. Intel HD Graphics 610, Kaby Lake Pentium G4650. Before, it worked fine at 1080p over HDMI. Now it tries to launch some "unsupported mode" as soon as the startup screen is complete. I have no idea what that mode is o...

derFunkenstein, wouldn't a nice small television be a better idea for this use case than a PC monitor?

Re: Obsolete IT in the wild

USB 3.1 Gen 1 in the new Surface Book 2 Now you're definitely trolling. Er, no. USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports have no business being on new hardware in 2017 (and beyond). USB 3.1 Gen 2 was released 4 years ago! The fact that the Surface Book 2 is limited to USB 3.1 Gen 1 is just appalling. It might be that t...

I really don't understand this terminology. Wouldn't it be simpler and more accurate to refer to these ports as "USB 3.0"?

I had this happen to me.

It turns out that you can install the update(s) but you need to do it as a local admin. And when the PC restarts after the install you need to sign in for the first time as a local admin.

Corporate users typically do not upgrade until official support ends. (And sometimes not even then.) Does not change a thing. Windows 7 is ancient and as obsolete as the headphone jack or a manual transmission (and I ******* love manual transmissions). End User, *we get the point*, but this is abou...

My wife started watching 'The Good Place', and I've been intermittently keeping up with it when I'm in the room. It's... very hard to describe, but probably worth watching if you enjoy watching disasters happen in slow-motion. It just... keeps getting worse. Riveting in a sick way. Season 1 is on N...

Re: Windows 10 Mobile officially dead

I don't think a new halo device with the exact same strategy they've been trying the past six or seven years will work. Microsoft never had a strategy or plan. Most Windows phones were low or midrange devices, and the few higher-end models were almost always exclusive to a single carrier. There was...

I'm one of the remaining few. I love my Lumia 950. I like the continuum dock I'm using to type this and listen to music on a DAC/amp. The integration with Skype on my desktop is pretty sweet, too. Cortana has.a "driving mode" and asks me if I want to hear my texts/Skype messages. Lack of ...

I discovered that the configuring a corporate email account disabled the grace period, so that's not an iOS problem. Outside of a few outliers, going beyond four threads yields little or no benefits to mainstream workloads and games. Unless you plan on streaming with the CPUs. It is them main reason why Intel never bother making a 6 core normal desktop SKU until pressure from Ryzen 7. That's true, Krogoth, but no...

Got 12 hours in so far. It has a fair amount of talking and narrative but as far as I can tell, 3 main paths. You can side with one or the other faction, or try to just kill everyone. The skill/fighting system is definitely different from DnD. Bit of a learning curve with that. There is an interest...

Re: Which cpu to get?

For a pure gaming rig, Intel, always. At least 4 physical cores of course. Note that I said "Intel", not "8th generation". You don't necessarily need the newest generation. As far as the 1700-non-x, that might be more future-proof if you do anything much other than games. If you ...

Anything on a newer version of IOS 12 should be good for your use case. Something like 12.2(50)+ for switches or 12.4(20)+ for routers. I'd check on Ebay or Craigslist for older gear, there's a large cottage industry of thirdhand Cisco gear trading for people looking for various certifications. I'd ...

Re: Would it make sense to replace a GTX 560 Ti with GT 1030?

I appear to be the only one that believes that the GeForce GT1030 is a waste of money for gaming. Performance of this graphics card in any modern game is going to be unsatisfactory. A Vanilla 1050 would be the right card for this use case, true... but since he doesn't need the performance he may as...

I don't see much gain in going beyond 1920 on a 10" screen. Good for marketing bullet points, perhaps. The ones I consider leading Chinese brands, at least from a western perspective, are Huawei, Xiaomi, ZTE, etc. Lenovo I consider non-Chinese. :) What, do you use a tablet with a second tablet...

As someone who has been down this path (too many times): don't combine your HTPC and your NAS/file server. Build two boxes, one suited to each task. I'd take it one step further. Don't combine you fileserver/media front end server/HTPC. This is good advice. It's better to ignore your budget and jus...

I enjoyed Darkest Dungeon and it kept me busy for a few weeks but after a bit I kind of just stopped playing it.
