Re: Do you use the Windows "Documents" folder?

For people using Dropbox or Google Drive I generally create a "Documents" (and Pictures etc) folder in their Dropbox/Drive folder and then make that folder the default save location for its corresponding library. I usually remove all other locations from the Libraries as well but that's o...

Re: Upgrade chains

I got a 4K TV because it was a good price and larger than what I had. I've yet to watch any 4K content on it. My ISP is supposedly replacing my 14/1 DSL with 50mb (unspecified upload) fiber O.O So...err...I could. But to me...I'd rather have higher res interactive content than fancier TV/movies. As...

Re: Skylake X: Bye Bye Rings, Hello Mesh

Kougar, I think you've got an accurate description there; despite your protests you seem to have a handle on the Ryzen design :) The way I'd put it is this: AMD is essentially putting a 4-socket system on a chip (MCM module). This is particularly apt because from what I've gathered you don't really ...

I'll never understand why Monitors and TVs use essentially the same technology, and in some cases the same panels, but TVs have better colors and Monitors have better sharpness. Make no sense to me.

Re: Blue screen memory monitor

It's possible that the latest GPU driver for Vista for your card isn't the newest and might be legacy/out of date. In that case the game might be looking for a feature that isn't there. It might be possible to force the game into a DX9 render path, but I'm not sure since that's mainly the purview of...

I picked up an X34 and it's insane for productivity (think 3 program windows side-by-side or one huuuuuuge Excel sheet). Just be aware that these screens are slower than their smaller gaming counterparts and require serious horsepower to game at 100FPS (even my 1080Ti isn't enough for some games). ...

That overlaps with their SMT=Simultaneous Multi-Threading moniker though. I know :D But it bugs me that the Ryzen and ThreadRipper boost mechanism does not take advantage of spatial symmetry. It wouldn't be a huge speed boost if they did (assuming that this isn't already happening in some form). Ye...

No drive is guaranteed not to break. If you have valuable data, you need to keep multiple copies in multiple physical locations. What JBI said. I'd elaborate and say that encrypting the data as an archive and storing it in multiple clouds *in addition to multiple copies/locations* is probably a goo...

Auzentech X-Meridian 7.1 2G is 32-bit PCI.

I'm going to have a real problem finding any that is both equivalent and inexpensive, so for now, PCI it is!

Edit: I'm aware of the Asus Xonar DG, my wife has one, it's good but not really comparable.

Re: 2.5GBASE-T and 5GBASE-T routers available when?

My understanding is that he's talking about using the 4-port switch part of a SOHO router as the network hub and therefore getting bottlenecked at 1Gbit. Of course there's a lot of reasons why that would never happen, starting with the fact that I'm not sure 10Gig switch/routers are even available, ...

I don't doubt that, Waco. In theory AC should be better at range. In reality most people don't have a TP-Link Archer, they have a POS $40 Belkin or D-Link (D-Link makes some decent stuff, but not on the low end). Then again the place I live is so congested that even 5GHz runs out of channels most da...

I was actually thinking a 7820X was the sweet spot for the most future-proof CPU I can get right now. According to Anandtech's review, the 7740X is just a 7700K on a new die to fit on X299 boards. In addition, x299 motherboards are only slightly more than Z270 boards. On many tests I've seen, the 7...

Ryu, while those are all good points, SOHO installs tend to be concentrated, not all over a house. My 10GBase-T runs are over standard Cat5e. The fact that this works fine is down to the fact that none of my cables are over 3 meters, and most are a lot shorter... because everything is (10GBase, at l...

The 10 Gb standard has been around woefully long to have not made it into consumer gear at this point... Which 10GB standard? 10GBase-T (copper) was created in 2007 IIRC. Ten years is about normal for a new standard to start filtering down to SOHO. EDIT: Yeah, 10-gig on Fiber patches dates back to ...

LostCat, 5GHz service has shorter range, and most SOHO devices either implement it poorly, try to use reduced antenna power in a misguided attempt to save wireless device battery life (or both). For crowded apartments the link you provided makes a lot of sense. For suburban housing it's usually bett...

The router assigns the internal IP addresses, no? Doesn't all internal traffic pass through the router at some point? Wouldn't the slowest link in the chain constrict all traffic to that speed? Yes, it would. But if your Internet pipe is about 1Gbit, it doesn't really matter how much higher your th...

What I most wonder about this whole debacle is who decided that many-core chips like these need to run all-core clocks this high. If you've got a lightly threaded workload that isn't running as fast as you want, you don't have many choices other than turning up the clocks. SKL-X turbo seems good en...
