Re: HTPC/file server

As someone who has been down this path (too many times): don't combine your HTPC and your NAS/file server. Build two boxes, one suited to each task. I'd take it one step further. Don't combine you fileserver/media front end server/HTPC. This is good advice. It's better to ignore your budget and jus...

Re: What are you playing right now?

I enjoyed Darkest Dungeon and it kept me busy for a few weeks but after a bit I kind of just stopped playing it. It is unique but I hated playing a game where i'd start to get a character to the point of being useful/attached to them and then they would get deranged or whatever to the point you can...

And...... the application broke when I tried to run it with JRE 9. So I rolled back to version 8. Yay regression testing. Incidentally, I have zero control over the broken application so I can't go fix it or even really debug what the problem is. Ahh, good times. Could be worse! Could be the Cisco ...

Re: QLED

LostCat, I have the 24" version. The brightness is insane. Easily 3-4x as bright as my trusty old IPS Dell Ultrasharp 2007WFP. The strange part about the brightness is that you don't lose any contrast (and it's a curved VA panel so no IPS glow and I didn't have any backlight bleed on my unit). ...

Re: really weird charging problem with my V20

That's a very good point, JBI. I tend to wait until I have a full shopping list before ordering on Monoprice so dealing with the shipping costs are less of a problem for me. On a side note, if you *don't* have Amazon Prime shipping costs there are pretty scary. I haven't had any issues with Monopric...

Not to knock Amazon / NewEgg / B&H (who is that?), but when I comes to cables I'd check Monoprice first.

Does anyone have details about the specific terribleness of SMT drives? Other than obviously the horrible re-write speeds. I'm asking in part because I mostly use my large drive for media storage and playback, the contents haven't changed (other than adding a few large files) for years and I'm looki...

VRAM isn't an issue at 1080p, just need high framerates.

At the risk of stating the obvious, I agree with all of the various replies. I was answering DerFunkenstein's questions using generic stereotypes on purpose, and to add to some nuance programming is no longer my wheelhouse (it's been over 10 years now). Good catch on .NET vs earlier MS SDE's, they h...

Lots of comments like "VB sucks, VB projects fail" but exactly zero specificity as to why. I only have cursory knowledge of VB, but it seemed fine, I guess. Or is this just another way of saying "C++ all the way because higher-level languages and frameworks like .NET suck and everyon...

JBI, was that a design failure that affected all drives, or was it hit-and-miss? I have two 250GB 840 EVO and as best I can tell they work fine, even on PCs that have been off for ~3 months.

It *was* a thing. However, support has waned and it was never a popular interface to begin with.

If you do want to use the slot you'd best think about your use case and purchase something as soon as you can.

VA displays that I have used have been brutally bad. I have one out of four) IPS display with bad bleed but it is rare to see it during normal usage. Hey, that's a decent chunk of hard drive space! On a modern Windows system, the pagefile could grow to something like 16GB, which isn't small change if your system drive is a tiny SSD. In all seriousness though, I haven't even looked at this on Windows in over a decade, but can't you set it to a ce...

That die looks really weird. In fact, it looks like Intel took a already-made Socket 1155 package and glued it onto a Socket 2066 package. In fact, given the lack of vertical space it does look like a simple interposer. Yeah, PoP looks weird. Not sure if Intel went this route in order to simplify a...
