Re: iPads and External Storage

If I go that route, I will go with this.

I think after some more research it looks like even the iPad Pro does not support external storage via the USB-C connetor.

That Surface Go is beginning to look really nice.

iPads and External Storage

Gerbil Legion: I call upon thee to answer what I took to be a simple question but is seemingly fraught with various perils. The Question, In The Beginning: Which iPads support importing AND EXPORTING to external storage media? The Background: The need case I wish to fill is for my retired parents. T...

Re: System Guide for GPU and Monitor

Recently bought a GTX 1080 and it blows me away. EVGA had one on sale yesterday for $399... And the RTX 2080ti blows me away... 20-30% increase for nearly double the cost. Yup, that blows me away... I assume you were talking RTX 2080. The Ti is about 100% performance increase for a 200% increase in...

Re: New Platform: Threadripper or Skylake-X

ECC is not * slower at the same speed and timings, way too many people confuse the register penalty on RIMMs, unbuffered doesn't do this. It is "harder" to overclock and is not sold "binned", but instead of guessing on gamer ram ("was that bluescreen my ram? is my data bein...

Re: 1080 ti upgrade

Judging by my experience going from a 780Ti to a 1080 Vanilla, let alone the Ti, the performance improvement is staggering. The 970 and the 780Ti are about neck-and-neck. While you will see more gains at high res, even with your current monitor your performance should at least double. Upgrading to 4...

Re: New Platform: Threadripper or Skylake-X

I'm not going to argue against aesthetics, that's the part that I appreciate about what you're trying to do! However, putting everything into one box has its disadvantages. I mentioned the competing requirements, but I'll add that when you separate the roles of gaming and compute, you can upgrade e...

Re: New Platform: Threadripper or Skylake-X

synthtel2, I would absolutely appreciate a link to B-die ECC memory. I know I will pay for it, but something like that is hard to pass up if I go the AMD route. As for the Game/Creative mode stuff, I guess I fell off of the wagon with the WX chips and their oddball die configuration. Once the WX ser...

Re: New Platform: Threadripper or Skylake-X

Thanks for that reply, I did not realize that the 2950X needed the reboot for game/creator mode. I thought that that was a WX only drawback. Will read into the impact that has, I am not a fan of needing to reboot to scale performance based on usage.

New Platform: Threadripper or Skylake-X

Gentlemen, I need some help making a platform upgrade selection. The gamer in me is leaning Intel, the productive and rational side is leaning AMD. Hoping for some insight to sway me one way or the other. I was all-in for X299 and the 9920X until I found the X399M board from ASRock. Background I am ...

Re: Fastest Sequential Write on Consumer Hardware

With consumer hardware? Not likely to happen, I'm afraid. What's the connection from the FPGA into the system? A PCIe x16 slot? Even assuming you can find controllers and drives capable of sustaining that kind of throughput, you're also going to need to structure the software such that all data tra...

Re: Fastest Sequential Write on Consumer Hardware

What is the minimum size of the disk/array you will require? Basically how long do you expect to need to sustain that rate?

Re: Skylake Damagebox giveaway entry thread

I have been lurking on this site for YEARS due to the existence of a single, wildly import approach to benchmarking. This is my attempt at conveying it:
