Re: Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition Review

Just going from the thread title, my own experience with this driver release is more good than bad. Being able to globally enable RAL rather than having to set it for each game is great, and while the UI changes seem pointlessly radical, the UI is a lot snappier and less buggy now. 1 On the bad side...

Being able to wait on more things at once without (in theory) sacrificing anything on the Amdahl's law side is great, though I'm not convinced 2019's scheduling is good enough for 4-way SMT on the desktop.

Re: RAM is stable with 3200 MHz XMP, fails to boot when I slightly tighten timings even with volt increase

I haven't had great experiences with any memory test for OC confirmation; error rates bad enough to make the system unusable long-term make it through even when all tests say it's good. What I try to do now is have all tests pass something significantly more stressful than the 24/7 config. Any given...

Hate to break it to you, truly, but Zak is done. His last review was his last review. At this point I'm not expecting anyone to take that particular torch, which means TuRk/frame time testing won't be used, which means if anyone ever wants to use it again it will be massively outdated—and without B...

Re: My pc freezes randomly. / help ?

That's mostly still a fine computer, and there's no reason to scrap the whole thing. Likely stuff at this point includes: * As JBI said, the timings might be set wrong. * The CPU or mobo might be broken. * (Most likely IMO) the hangs aren't the RAM's fault directly, but the sketchy RAM broke somethi...

Re: My pc freezes randomly. / help ?

There's no "only" one --- one error is one too many. RAM tests should be squeaky clean, and there's an excellent chance flaky RAM is the root cause of all of this then (and probably more glitchiness). It sounds like you've only got one stick of RAM? That makes debugging this significantly ...

Re: Best RAM for my build

At minimum something like this . Even absent the resolution and refresh rate, 3200C16 is dirt cheap in a build where a 2080 Ti is on the table, and is worth every penny. Past 3200C16 it gets less clear. With a 1440p144 monitor and a 2080 Ti, you could easily be very CPU-bound depending on the games ...

Running without D: is a solid next step. The SSD's performance looks reasonable to me, given it's a very low-end drive to start with.

Re: Do/did you reapply thermal paste in laptops/notebooks?

I only recall specifically redoing thermal paste on one, but I've disassembled/reassembled quite a few laptops to that level, and would absolutely do that (including on something still in warranty) if I think it'll make a noticeable difference. (Picked old laptop in the poll, the one I did that spec...

Re: Optimal Heatsink Fin Density?

If you modify fin density and nothing else, you're picking an optimal amount of airflow (and less directly making a tradeoff between noise and peak cooling capacity). If the airflow to fin density ratio is too high, the whole of the fin surfaces see roughly the same low air temperature no matter whe...

Re: Dynamic Clock Rates and Frame-time Consistency?

Frame-to-frame behavior is easy enough to test pretty much anywhere you can get a fixed scene. Dynamic clocks do add a couple fps of wobble on a framerate counter, but it isn't a difference I can feel. As far as lower-frequency swings, it'll depend on the game a lot. If naturally slow frames / scene...

Re: Ice Lake-U and -Y to arrive by Christmas

They're fitting AVX-512 (albeit with only 1/clock FMA throughput), four cores, and 48 EUs in a 9W TDP, and the CPU arch doesn't seem to clock so well to start with. It's understandable that the worst-case clocks are pretty ugly, and I bet it'll be tough to get it to drop that far in practice, especi...

Re: AMD Navi / RDNA Topic

Thanks for the reminder, and I can confirm it's awesome on a 480. I care about latency a lot more than average, but this is the kind of killer feature that'd get me to pick my 480 over a 1070 Ti (or 5700XT over 2080 Ti, etc) on the basis of delivered performance alone. It does exactly what it says o...

IDK if I've ever seen it explicitly stated in a benchmark context myself, but when I wrote bandwidth tests with a variety of access patterns it worked out that way, and that matches up with the spec (the same wires handle both directions and read/write/copy all get near the theoretical max bandwidth...

50 GB/s on a memory copy bandwidth test conventionally means 25 read and 25 write, not 50 and 50. Think max achievable bandwidth, not actual copy rate; copy is just the access pattern.

Thanks! That is disappointing though. :( Edit: The more I think about it, the more it makes sense. Also, for 6/8C parts tripping the downclock sounds like it'll basically never be a good thing, but for 12/16C parts there's relatively little harm done by it, and it gives the 16C parts the option of u...

No worries from me about the technical issues, stuff happens, but I've got to say I too really hate the new look. Scaling to 90% and forcing colors to light-on-dark makes it tolerable, but that's clunky itself.

What's going on with the 3700X's memory bandwidth in the review? By any chance was the IF running at half speed? I thought it was supposed to be good for full speed up to 3600-ish, but if this is full, overall IF bandwidth looks cripplingly weak (and if this is half, it'd be great to know how high w...

Re: DDR4 Clock speeds impact on performance

It's tough to generalize since every game will respond to it a bit differently, but in my experience, it's usually most helpful in the very worst-case scenarios for performance. 99% frametimes probably still don't go far enough to see a lot of it; think bigger stalls (99.99% frametimes?), or what ha...

Re: AMD Input Delay Reduction Technology - Anti-Lag

The buffer of work between CPU and GPU already has a fair bit of management done on it (more from AMD than Nvidia IME), and this sounds like it's optionally biasing that management more for latency where the usual setup prioritizes consistent frame delivery. AFAICT (without much investigation) the c...

Re: 16 COARZ.... Not announced by AMD

Nobody publicly discloses IPC as-such because the hard numbers they could tout aren't necessarily relevant to much of anything. IIRC the hard maximums are 6 for *Lake and Zen and 7 for Apple's A12, but no mixed/sustained workload comes close to saturating that. Seeing real IPCs in a real workload is...
