But I wouldn't spend money on DDR1 anymore. :-? Indeed, now the upgrade is for him to decide. IMHO, for that system, I'd stick with just adding another 512MB stick (or maybe 1GB) and then just let it be as a seconday PC and do a new one. The main reason for this is the motherboard: you've got DDR1 ...

The only one you mentioned that isn't Linux, is PCBSD which is based on BSD, another Unix look-a-like. It could be argued that BSD isn't a UNIX "look-a-like", but rather one of the two current OS lineages that are directly descended from the original UNIX (the other one being System V and...

I saw the coverage when they released it. Looks like quite a nice product. The only question is, when will it be available? Or is it already? I don't even have express card in my laptop so it isn't for me. But surely an intersting product.

I've used linux in different occations mostly for 5 years, I'm currently running Ubuntu on both desktop and laptop, and have found no reason to go elsewhere, the best way to find if you like it to use the live cd. In ubuntus case, you can use the same CD for testing and installing. Just boot up, see...

You could try the first Ubuntu Alpha release :) Yes, that will be what to test. Though I will not pick up the whole release, just the kernel, video, and perhaps sound components. I've tried early ubuntu herds before, they have never been usable for productive work. But I guess that's the point of a...

Re: Ubuntu on newer machines

I might just do that. Though I am quite close to get the 3D acceleration running. It even says "Direct rendering: Yes" or something like that in dmesg after boot, but glx seem to fail very quickly due to not being compiled for the current kernel. Trying some peaces of gutsy might be the ea...

16% of 2048 MB so 327 MB I suppose for programs, plus 16% more for cache. Though any memory reporting in linux is quite dodgy, all applications will report different values, and most of the problems can be led down to firefox. :) Anyway, I will never fill the RAM in this laptop. Everything that dema...

Ubuntu on newer machines

I got my hands on a Acer Travelmate 6292 a week ago or so, a really nice peace of hardware. Unfortunally it came with Vista Business, and my mind couldn't endure more that 30 minutes of that system. I have no clue what Microsoft is on about, they were on a decent track. Anyway, it now runs Ubuntu 7....

Most older systems run well in ubuntu. I had a P3 700MHz laptop with ubuntu earlier, and it ran Ubuntu smoothly. This was with 576MB of RAM though, and I'd recoomenend 512MB for heavier firefox usage. If you want Ubuntu or Xubuntu or Kubuntu, you have to descide yourself. But I think all would run f...

I remember someone complaining that they had problems using >1TB of disk space, and upon investigation it appears that UFS does have some issues that kick in at that point. That will hardly be a problem in a computer that probably doesn't even have LBA support though. :) I second trying it in a VM....

First time I've seen this, interesting. Though if it first came out in march 1981, it was a few years after laserdisc to market.

Another old school note I found on wikipedia now was that Laserdisc apparently was called Disco-Vision in the beginning. It's a pity they dropped such a cool name... 8)

Now we're here. This is good thing for all customers, but I'm still concered for AMDs economics. I truly hope we'll see some good developments over the next few years, so we can still have a competetive x86 CPU market.

I'll still hold my money until Agena, but I can't say I'm not tempted. :)

All these massive releases are a strange development if you ask me. I like that Ubuntu still keeps their main release constrained to one CD, doing the rest over networking is much perfered to downloading many GiBs of data you will never use.

Atleast they didn't release it on 20 CDs. ;)

Familiar Linux

Would anyone else here perhaps use the familiar linux distribution on their PDA? I've used it for two month or so now, and I must say it puts Win CE in real shame. Yeah, that has been the most constructive idea so far. The only risk with that idea is that it might get too cold. I just dropped my old Vapochill SE@R404a for a new Lian-Li PC-V600 (which I by the way think is a brilliant case), and now comes the question: What to do with the Vapo? I considered selling it first, even though it is quite old and not in perfect shape any more, but the market for vapor change cooli...
