There are probably other things that I despise, but these top the list for this week. 1) People who refuse to use sudo instead of logging in as root 2) Non-standard IPsec configurations that don't work no matter what you do on different firewall platforms. 3) SELinux. Nice in theory, a royal ...

Hyper-Threading & Performance Monitor

I have a server running dual Xeons with Hyperthreading and have noticed that it has been very sluggish recently. I was hoping to track the processor utilization with the performance monitor included with windows. The numbers I came back with were lower than I think should be correct, as it gives me ...

Are you sure that you really want a geek girl? They can be awfully expensive, at least in my experience. My girlfriend (soon to be wife) is more of a geek than I am. One of the problems with this is that every time I get a new toy she has to have it. I can't even make things "too geeky" so she won't...

I know that I am pretty late to be adding anything to this, but if you want a better tool than your normal netstat try fport. It works like netstat but will also let you know what proggy is using each port.

It can be found here:

My production is at less than half of what it was previously, this is due to several unforunate events. Two systems belonging to friends are no longer folding for me, as both have had systems die, and blame the folding client. My basement flooded a couple of weeks ago costing me 5 24/7 systems that ...

Well its not bragging but this seems to be the best place to put this. My basement flooded Saturday. This puts me out 9.5 Ghz till god knows when. I haven't even started the horrible process of finding out if anything is still good since two of the systems were partially submerged. There were other ...

Old games on a widescreen laptop

I recently bought an emachines m6809. It features a 16:10 widescreen laptop with a native resolution of 1280x800. The video is a mobile radeon 9600. For most of the newer games I run (UT2004) I can play them at the native res with no problems. When I switch to old 640x480 games like Starcraft or Dia...

Yes indeed. Without your spring break drop, I don't know if I would have caught you. I have however increased my lead on you the last week. I finally got around to overclocking the 7 odd systems that I have direct access to, and adding a couple more part timers. I might be able to push myself into t...

Until very recently all Cyberguard Firewalls were built on top of a hardened SCO distribution. My job forces me to work with them, so that gives me a reason to find tools that work with it.

It didn't do that for me with Halo either until a couple of months ago. Since I don't play it much it wasn't an issue, but today I had an urge to play it and it took me a while to figure out I need to turn off the folding client to make it work again. Very frustrating. I like keeping the graphical c...

Grphical client minimizes games??

On my main machine I do some light gaming as well as folding. I have found that with both Halo and Dungeon Siege that if I have the graphical client running it minimizes the game as soon as it is opens. It refuses to let me run either game until a turn it off. Pausing work doesn't help. Does anyone ...
