Re: arpstorm?

The ship's science officer just completed a computer library search of past Leor communications in the history database. He was last heard Thu May 25, 2006 9:40 am boasting proudly (as he was known to do): I've said it before and i'll say it again. no one will ever defeat me, NOT EVER. juggs will ge...

Re: arpstorm?

I never thought the day would come when I would gaze upon The Great Derelict of Leor . But there it lies, about three days travel from our current position. Leor was a great Folder in days long gone by. An era when 10,000 PPD was considered insanely good. A time when GPU Folding was unheard of. All ...

Re: arpstorm?

Thank you all for your kind words. arpstorm still has a few stragglers to be sure. The chief engineer maintains our ships space worthy, we keep the peace, enjoy the occasional gift exchanges with fellow Folders, maintain good humor, and keep our dilithium crystals dry. The GPU Folding has certainly ...

Re: arpstorm?

A belated happy 2014 to those who still monitor this old thread. Arpstorm is still active. We maintain our vanity domain name http://www.arpstorm.com that redirects to our extreme overclocking statistics. As you can see we've crossed the 16,000,000 point threshold. A few of us are now Folding using ...

Re: Frankie 2012

@BIFF The machine runs Ubuntu 12.04 and the logfiles live in /var/log. I did check them but the system did not panic, it just froze up, and Linux was unable to execute any instructions after that to report. There are no bread crumbs. It's been Folding fine since I got up this morning and restarted t...

Re: Frankie 2012

@BIF I should set up a little temperature recording system to monitor the room temperature. It's an unheated room in the carport but it's very well insulated and the heat of the Folding farm keeps the room shirt-sleeve comfortable. That little USB-based thermometer sitting in a box will come in hand...

Re: Frankie 2012

To me VirtualBox is still a step below VMware. I've actually had tremendously good luck with VirtualBox running on an OS X host machine. On the same machine I run VMWare Fusion and Parallels and they are all solid. But under Linux as a host OS I'm not experiencing the same goodness in VirtualBox. I...

@farmpuma The MacPro (Early 2008 model) has dual quad-core 64-bit CPUs clocking at 2.8 Ghz 8) The Intel Q9300 + VirtualBox experiment was a fail. I was using Ubuntu 12.10 64-bit as the guest OS and I have never had such a sluggish virtualization experience. When I started up the SMP Folding client i...

Re: Frankie 2012

drfish a.k.a. " Doc " at the SereneScreen forums is an avid Folder and a very positive influence. I believe he would be the kind of character to Fold under extreme conditions, including a dusty garage, and brag about it. If the garage is not heated then I'd expect insects to be attracted ...

Re: Frankie 2012

Noisy systems get even noisier when they're Folding. It's amazing how much extra heat those multi-core CPUs generate when running flat out. It got so bad that the wife motivated me to do something about it. So I did two things (1) I made a mental note to explore options for home-brew computers that ...

@Biff Folding is a distraction all right but it's a good kind of distraction at least. I really do hope that our efforts help Stanford to break new ground in terms of medical discoveries. Hello all you halloweeners Folding for TRFrankenbot. arpstorm here. Thanks to Flying Fox for reminding me about the October TRFrankenbot activity. Oh yeah, it's October, and according to tradition all those in the mood for Halloween fun reconfigure their Folding farms to TRFrankenbot on team 2630, the same team as arpstorm . OK I'll reconfigure a quad core Linux machine with an Intel Q9300 quad core CPU overclocked from 2.5Ghz to 3.0 Ghz to Fo...

I realize this is an old thread. But, it's October 2012 and arpstorm is still Folding, although our might is reduced, our hearts remain strong. We just made the top 20 list today but OMG it takes a lot more daily points to make the list than in 2005 when we started to Fold. We're going to make the 1...

Thanks for checking in, and for the kind words, farmpuma . We had some rather warm weather here last week and the wife complained about the heat and noise the Folding PC was making. Our little band at arpstorm has received additional Folders into our midst. One new Folder just cranked up the GPU Folding client, producing a nice spike in our points per day.
