Re: Supercomputer GPU rendering

Production 3D assets eat a lot of RAM. I've worked with some of the models from Avatar. An average character model from that film has over 200 GB of textures applied to it. Renderers are generally pretty smart about using mip-maps to only load as much resolution as needed for the current frame, but ...

Would love to see V-Ray Benchmark used. V-Ray has become one of the most-used professional CPU renderers, so the results would be relevant for a lot of people.

Re: Hard Drive going south...

Personally, for a SATA drive I would go for 2.5" instead of M.2, just because it's less fiddly to work with if you want to replace it or move it to a different machine. But that's a personal preference that might not align with your priorities.

Re: Choose a graphics tablet XP-Pen Star06 for Animation

Hi feiyang. I'm a professional 3D artist and digital painter. That tablet you posted a link to DOES NOT HAVE A SCREEN ! It looks similar to a Wacom Intuos, which also doesn't have a screen. If you want to draw with a stylus on a screen (sometimes called a 'pen display'), you are looking at spending ...

Good on you for encouraging your daughter's interest in art in this era of STEM-or-bust. My parents had to put up with me needing a lot of computer upgrades and expensive software, but I've made a 19-year career out of it so far.

Re: Bitlocker vs Password Protection

Don't many SSD's do encryption by default? It could be that your data is already encrypted, but unless and until you set a password, the drive's controller just decrypts it on the fly without credentials.

edit: I could be wrong though!

Re: RAM question while rendering video

Without knowing what software they're using, that does sound pretty typical for rendering video. Presumably the size of the footage on disk is bigger than the available RAM, so it's being loaded into memory continually to stay ahead of the CPU. Towards the end of the job you should see the RAM usage...

Re: Legendary Fantasy and Scifi Author Ursula Leguin passed away.

Really saddened. The Earthsea books remain the most humane fantasy I've ever read. It's ostensibly a "young adult" book, but it's says more about adulthood and middle age than most SFF for grown-ups. I mean, it made me get slightly sniffly about a particularly trusty boat . I haven't read ...

Re: Creation Software - Humble Bundle! Vegas Pro Edit + More

Vegas is an outstanding editor, and you'll probably not chafe against the limitations of an older version unless you're doing 4k or spherical video.

I went ahead and grabbed the bundle since I need to put together a new demo reel. I'll probably never touch any of the other stuff in it.

Re: Stupid and terrible software.

This was ages ago (2006, probably), but the software that came with a Philips digital photo frame I bought refused to install if you had less than 10% free space on your HDD. It didn't matter if you had a 40 GB drive or a 400. I ended up having to move a bunch of stuff to my D: drive, install the so...

Yeah, I recently noticed that this had been happening to me for months on my little 7" Windows 8.1 tablet. I only use it as an e-reader and thought the battery was just going out. Finally occurred to me to launch the task manager and saw the Windows Update process whipping the CPU at a steady 4...

Re: SanDisk Cruzer Edge is *horrible*

My employer got a big batch of custom-logo-emblazoned 8 GB drives to give out at trade shows, and not only do they read and write in the mid-single-digits, but I've heard that at least two people in my studio have had them expire in a literal puff of smoke when trying to copy files to them. I have a...

Re: Can anyone clear up: 5960x with 128GB RAM?

I'm not aware of any GPU fluid solvers that would be able to handle the kind of job that generates 100+ GB of RAM usage, because VRAM is so much more constrained. The reason you need to keep that whole 100 GB in RAM is that what happens to 1 voxel is dependent on the 26 voxels that surround it, and ...

Re: WD drives have Extra-sensitivity to vibration and restarts?

If it makes you feel better my NAS is sitting 10 feet away from eight 15" subwoofers. I tried reproducing the "yelling at disks" video while doing a scrub (which peaks out at around 1.8 GB/s) and saw no disturbances even at "annoy your neighbors because their dishes are rattling...

Re: WD drives have Extra-sensitivity to vibration and restarts?

Even loud noises can disrupt the operation of a HDD. A few months ago I saw a YouTube video (can't find it right now) where someone had a real-time plot of recovered disk I/O errors on a rack mount server. Just yelling through the front air intake vents caused a noticeable spike in error rates. Dan...

Re: Is 60Hz enough for general [non-gaming] computing?

I could mmmmaaaaybe see a benefit for 3D modelling, where pro apps are basically game engines, but even there, I've never actually heard of a studio equipping artists with >60 Hz screens. It'd certainly be interesting to try tumbling some 3D models around at 60 and 120 to see if the higher rate make...

Thanks for the anecdote. No need for sass, dogg. Sure, it's an anecdote, but there's no room for subjective interpretation of the results on my end. It's an A/B test with one variable. I did test with min-proc-states lower than 100%, and my heaviest tracks did fine starting at about 60, but if I'm ...

Re: Thinking about acquiring a GTX 1080 for artwork

Sorry, skipped the thread because I don't understand how there would be a significant difference between a 980 and 1080 for artwork. Or rendering that would be sufficient enough to warrant the upgrade. That's not an area I'm familiar with. :) Double the VRAM would probably be the biggest advantage ...

Re: What's the last piece of tech you regret buying?

Back in early 2005, I bought a Mitsubishi 2070SB 22" monitor which was supposed to be the pinnacle of CRT tech.  While it's true that the colors were amazing and it had support for a huge number of resolutions and refresh rates, anything above 1600x1200 @ 60hz looked like fuzzed-out crap.  The...

I have the previously mentioned Phanteks Eclipse and like it a lot. The only weird thing about it is that there is literally zero airflow through the bottom 3.5" drive cage. It doesn't worry me too much since my 3.5" drive is only for occasional backups, and it rarely gets spun-up, but for...

Thanks guys, those are both good points. I'm only even considering the PhysX arrangement since I have nothing else to do with the 750ti. I may try to find it a good home with a co-worker instead. Still a great little card for older games!

is an x4 slot fast enough for a PhysX-only card?

I've got a 1070 arriving at the end of the week. It will be replacing a 750ti in my MB's x16 slot. I was thinking of keeping the 750 in my system as a designated PhysX processor and just moving it over to my only other full-length slot, which is an x4. So, a couple questions present themselves: 1 - ...
