Re: Upgrading internet connection, time to upgrade firewall -- recommendations?

I have operated a Linux-based firewall for many years now. I have used Smoothwall in the past. I hear good things about pfSense. I do not like commercial firewalls because I always find that constrain my desired usage in some way. YMMV Here's a few things that I have learned from running a Linux-bas...

The fire extinguisher in the picture looks like a nice "classic Americana" antique.

Why destroy such a nice antique by trying to stuff a piece of technologically obsolete hardware (a PC) into it?

You might put something in the title about Meltdown. Might get some more interest that way. Right now I think that would equate to "clickbaiting" the article. The definitions of "meltdown" and "spectre" flaws seem to be pretty clear here: https://meltdownattack.com

Quite an impressive expression in "make do IT".

I don't consider "make do IT" a negative term in this case since the corresponding company acquisition paperwork and process sounds quite depressing.

I would call yourself and the team(s) that helped you "recyclers".

Re: Centurylink Modem

I would add this to evaluating the DSL line. It's a simple test and some might think it's meaningless, but I have found it helpful in the past when I had DSL. Go to the interface box on the outside of the building. Sometimes that box is grey. Sometimes it has a test jack on it's "customer side&...

Re: Centurylink Modem

I had SBC DSL for a number of years before cable modem service became stable in my area. DSL can be very stable IF the phone line that it runs on is of GOOD QUALITY. What's that? The copper pair used to run DSL has to be as "clean" as possible on the telephone company's side. I can get rea...

Re: I Know TR Promotes Newegg Deals But...

Confirmed via email to me from Newegg Customer Service:

"We truly apologize for the inconvenience. The review cannot be edit once manufacturer replies to it."

I did notice that I could request that my review be deleted and I did that. Let's see if Newegg will honor that request.

Re: I Know TR Promotes Newegg Deals But...

Some of my Amazon reviews have been taken down because the seller didn't like what I had to say. First I've heard of this. If that's allowed, it shouldn't be. It is generally only allowed if the seller can show that you violated some rule about reviews. I've put up nasty reviews that were 100% trut...

Re: I Know TR Promotes Newegg Deals But...

Unfortunately, sometimes a reviewer blames a product flaw for their own lack of knowledge or prior research, or is just plain vindictive. So there's got to be some way to limit the buyer reviews. That being said, Newegg's overall experience has declined rapidly since the buyout, particularly in cur...

If you can't update the existing review, just post another one? (And yes, EFI can be a pain on Linux, especially if you are using software RAID.) I was able to update some of my reviews in the past, but I think Newegg had a time limit on that "edit window". When editing the existing revie...

Has any gerbil run into the problem of Newegg allowing manufacturers to "whitewash" a bad product review with a misleading vendor response? And then the Newegg purchaser can no longer update their own review? I say "whitewash" because the manufacturer's own tech support claims th...

They've been getting ready to launch the M8 for quite a while now. It's not a response to Epyc, it's more of a bid to keep their server/database division afloat. Yup. Re: Playing with a 41 year old subwoofer

If that subwoofer is as "stiff" as claimed, an amplifier with strong current (Amps) drive will be more important than "raw power" (watts). Saying that, I once had an amplifier that could theoretically drive 10 amps into a short circuit; it had MOSFET outputs. That old amplifier c...

I would agree with the other comments in this thread on separating the router from the wireless access point. Separate devices, while costing more to obtain, provide more flexibility in placement and unique upgrade paths for each device. I have seen a few "retail" routers (1 WAN, 4 GigE on...
