Preventative measure #2, although I know it's been mentioned already: Don't buy anything from Sony. Tell them that you were going to buy X product, but now you won't. If it was a music CD, tell the artist. I concur, bhtooefr's measure is an effective way... call Sony and also call/write/email the a...

Slashdot has reported that you can hide your WoW cheats with the Sony rootkit! http://yro.slashdot.org/yro/05/11/03/187215.shtml?tid=158&tid=206 I do not think there is any way to prevent this from escallating further. We now have a widely demonstrated successfull windows rootkit that will succe...

One more reason for you to get 64 bit edition of windows XP, Sony can then not rootkit your system when you load one of their media players from a DRM disk... Very compelling reason.

Large corporations are neither good guys nor bad guys. They are entities looking out for their own interests. When those happen to coincide with your interests, they can be a powerful force for your good. When their interests are at odds with yours, they can be a powerful force for harm. In this ca...

Yeah, before I saw this thread I forwarded the link to news@techreport in case Scott wants to do a front page article on it. It sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen to me (whether a private suit, a class action, or something brought by the FTC or one of the EU commissions). I don't know if you r...

I was just thinking about that article on Ars, which was very well done imho. You sum it up well, this discovery really does bring to light how Sony is preparing for the big push into making cash based solely on content and DRM exploitations. Almost makes M$ look like the good guy.. letting you plug...

Sony Installs Rootkit via DRM disks...

Mark over at systinternals.com wrote in his blog that he found a rootkit installed on his computer by, of all things, a DRM protected Van Zant music CD. Sony installs it onto your system without EULA notification (although that may have changed now) and provides no uninstaller for it. This is illega...

Build your own for a lot less and be just as effective. The unit is new and unproven but a good idea. If you havent built your own in six months and want a turnkey solution, look them up; they should have all the bugs worked out by then.

Almost any watercooling system will be as good as a very good air cooled HSF unit and a lot quieter. The added advantage is that if you spend a little money early on, you can transfer your h20 cooler into new systems as you upgrade. I built my first watercooler from a 60 gph pond pump, a transmissio...

Memory--- CAS2 - 2.5 does it matter anymore?

Just a question; but what is the Real performance difference between CAS 2 and 2.5 memory at either 2700 or 3200? Is it worth what would essentially be a doubling in cost, just for the extra latency boost? This comes up because my number cruncher has a bad 256 Mb stick of 2100 CAS2 DDR RAM in it and...

I would say mix and match. Dangerden waterblock definately. Get a pump from any online aquarium supplier and grab a radiator from the auto parts store or even better a motorcycle wrecker. Ones from KX80's work great. Tubing can be purchased from the hardware store.

No, seriously, my Compaq 1800 gets to about 130F at the top of the keyboard. Pretty warm.

That wasn't too insane.. except for the time we Hit the powerline with the rotor. That was exciting.

Had to recalibrate my 'pucker factor' scale.

I guess future shuttles will have to be safer and easier to repair in orbit. If in current shuttles there are not two tiles alike, that's a major design problem. It means you have to carry a helluva lot of tiles for reimplacements. What I think is that we need a new orbiter. No doubt about it. Curr...

Fixing the shuttle in orbit is impossible. The nature of the tiles is such that there are No Two Alike . Replacing tiles on the shuttle takes someone with years of experence and training to do correctly and is a slow and meticulus proceedure. Not something that can be done in orbit. They are in a to...
