Re: Camping / Hiking :

for the hiking campers: how heavy are your packs typically? I'd think everything you purchased would be determined by performance vs weight. tent, sleeping bag and gear could get heavy for long hikes without being very careful about which product you chose. I'm a taller than average guy (6ft 5in) a...

Re: Camping / Hiking :

2 minimum, 4 would be better. The packed size looks just about right, might even fit in my saddle bag. What I was hoping was to find a tent that wasn't the traditional style of poles, though. I'd like something that sets up really quick. That's a good affordable option, though. I'll keep it in mind...

Re: Camping / Hiking :

I'm actually looking for a recommendation for a quick-setting tent. It needs to be compact enough to fit on a motorcycle. I found a promising MSR but it was like $200 O_O I've done quite a bit of backpacking and motorcycle camping. What size tent are you looking for? How many people do you want to ...

Re: Ryzen 1600x-----Please Help

I have a 1600X and MSI X370 GAMING PLUS motherboard with a Noctua NH-C14 and only one fan is a very small case. Using Ryzen Master to read die temp, it idles between 30° and 35° C and maxes out under load between 55° and 60° C. Out of curiosity, what is the ambient temperature in your environment? A...

Re: Touchscreen instead of touchpad

I think it could be really useful, especially if it was paired with well executed haptic feedback. Also, most phone touchscreens offer much better response than the track-pads on a lot of laptops. As long as the touchscreen acted like a track-pad when used as such (relative cursor motion instead of ...

Re: Simple HTIB options

Things like CEC and ARC are a reason for not using the Toslink. I have a good setup running 4K over HDMI with 5.1 audio running through ARC. I love the simplicity of it. OK, that makes a lot of sense. I guess I just have never had a good experience with CEC or ARC yet. Perhaps it is just the hardwa...

Re: Simple HTIB options

Huh? HDMI can carry 5.1 DTS just fine. The TV may truncate its own output at two channels, however? Unless this person simply does not have the space, it seems like it would be better to manage all sources except OTA channels through a 5.1 HDMI receiver, and rely on HDMI loopback from the TV for OT...

Re: Is Flips Audio going out of business?

Audiophiles... I guess you have $1000 headphones and speakers don't you? No, not even close to that. Like I said before, I spent about the same as you did on your flips for my Audio Technicas. My speakers are 12 year old bookshelf speakers made by Energy that I think sound good for their size and h...

Re: Is Flips Audio going out of business?

They don't sound tinny to me at all, and I don't have to mess with an equalizer either. Anyway these things do sound perfect with my on board audio. The problem is, a lot of people don't understand how good headphones/speakers can be. I know lots of people who swear that "these speakers/headph...

Re: Is Flips Audio going out of business?

The stereo system I was using before. And I wouldn't call them under-powered speakers either. They are loud enough for my hearing loss to hear while watching movies and such without having to wear my hearing aids. What was this stereo system? And just because a set of speakers gets loud, doesn't me...

Re: Is Flips Audio going out of business?

I haven't paid much attention to Flips since I first heard about them years ago. They seemed like an expensive novelty to me. When they were asking the same amount of money as my ATH-M50x's, I couldn't see the point unless you really needed some small, under-powered travel speakers too. Do you reall...

Re: Strange Issue with SolidWorks 2017

This is hopefully the final update. I updated to SW2017 SP5.0 last week Monday and things have improved immensely. I have had only one crash since the update (instead of at least one per day) and lots of the other weird issues I was experiencing have been fixed as well. Hopefully this is the end of ...

So just a quick update. I ran memtest86 on the problem machine and no errors were detected. I may try running a longer test (10 passes) tonight to see if that reveals anything.

Anyone have any other ideas?

Strange Issue with SolidWorks 2017

Hi all, About 6 months ago, my work purchased a couple new Dell Workstations to replace our aging PCs for running SolidWorks. At the same time, we updated to SolidWorks 2017. One of the new machines has worked great but the other has been plagued with a number of strange issues. The first is that So...

Re: MSI X370 Recognizing RAM but not Adding to Total?

I had a few minutes today to adjust the RAM timings. I was able to get 2933MHz at 16-18-18-18-36-2T without a problem. I had tried to change the timings before all of the memory was recognized and nothing beyond the default 2133MHz would boot properly. Hopefully I can tighten the timings a bit more ...

Re: MSI X370 Recognizing RAM but not Adding to Total?

Thank you for all of the helpful feedback! Last night, I tried all of the usual tricks to diagnose memory issues (re-seating them, swapping stick locations, changing channels, mismatched slots, etc). Since each time I had to move the memory, I had to remove the CPU heatsink (the PC case is tiny), I ...

MSI X370 Recognizing RAM but not Adding to Total?

Hi all, I just upgraded my wife's aging PC to a AMD Ryzen 5 1600X with a MSI X370 Gaming Plus motherboard and 16GB (8GB x 2) DDR4 3000MHz Corsair Vengeance LPX memory. The upgrade process went smoothly and everything posted fine on the first boot up. I then updated the BIOS to the latest version fro...

Re: Crashplan for Home is going away, looking for computer to computer backup alternatives

One tip for using Duplicati. Duplicati will create a local DB file on the source PC. It will be stored somewhere in user's home folder. On Windows, it is under AppData hidden folder. It is better to back that local DB somewhere manually or using a scheduled job. If the source PC crashes, and your l...

My drives arrived this morning and was able to power up one of them on my lunch hour. Unfortunately, it looks like that particular drive may not be a WD Red. The model number reported by S.M.A.R.T. is WDC WD80EFAX-68LHPN0. From what I have read, the Reds should have a WD80EFZX prefix. I'll power on ...

Best option I've found so far is BuddyBackup, which seems to do most of what Crashplan peer-to-peer was doing, with the exception that you don't seem to be able to set a time window for the sync to happen, it's always-on.
I just wish they had a Mac client. Thanks for the suggestion though!
