Re: WD 8TB External USB 3.0 Hard Drive

Well, curiosity got the best of me this morning and I decided to wake up a hour early and disassemble/install one of the drives. It was indeed a Red. The only downside is that my case requires me to use the bottom holes on the drive and the new drive's hole spacing is significantly larger than my ol...

Re: Crashplan for Home is going away, looking for computer to computer backup alternatives

One tip for using Duplicati. Duplicati will create a local DB file on the source PC. It will be stored somewhere in user's home folder. On Windows, it is under AppData hidden folder. It is better to back that local DB somewhere manually or using a scheduled job. If the source PC crashes, and your l...

Re: WD 8TB External USB 3.0 Hard Drive

My drives arrived this morning and was able to power up one of them on my lunch hour. Unfortunately, it looks like that particular drive may not be a WD Red. The model number reported by S.M.A.R.T. is WDC WD80EFAX-68LHPN0. From what I have read, the Reds should have a WD80EFZX prefix. I'll power on ...

Here is a little bit of good news. According to Ars Technica : While New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said the forced arbitration terms of service are "unenforceable" and should be removed, Equifax has added language to its " FAQs for Consumers " that the arbitration c...

Re: WD 8TB External USB 3.0 Hard Drive

I snagged a couple of those a few days ago when they didn't offer the free 128GB flash drive with it though unfortunately. I bought one to keep as an external and the other to shuck and put in my server. edit: I was planning on taking apart one tonight, but there was a delay in shipping. They are su...

Re: A rather good video by Linus about a Hyperloop team and prototype..

I like when the Hyperloop back when it was called a "vacuum tunnel". Wasn't the Hyperloop originally going to be based on just reduced pressure tube, in the realm of a "rough vacuum"? I thought it was originally going to have enough air still in the tube so that the pods could r...

Ach my apologies, missed that part :( sorry! No worries! I had some success in using Duplicati. I gave Duplicati a try tonight from one of my PCs and it seems to work like a champ! I will give it try from my parents Mac tomorrow evening after installing an additional 8TB of storage in my server. Th...

Best option I've found so far is BuddyBackup, which seems to do most of what Crashplan peer-to-peer was doing, with the exception that you don't seem to be able to set a time window for the sync to happen, it's always-on.
I just wish they had a Mac client. Thanks for the suggestion though!

If you don't need access, and are just providing a safe spot for their backups, Time Machine (as of Sierra) lets you back up to a networked SMB share . Unfortunately, my parent's internet speed is too slow to have this work. I have tried using these directions ( https://www.bytemark.co.uk/docs/exam...

Are you using peer-to-peer only? This article claimed that there is no direct replacement. Perhaps time to research setting up an SFTP server, or roll your own offsite backup rotation schemes (not possible if you have a geographical distance limitation). https://www.macworld.com/article/3218646/dat...

Crashplan for Home is going away, looking for computer to computer backup alternatives

Hi everyone, I am looking for a solution backing my parents Mac to my Windows server. My parents enjoy photography and have about 500GB of photos that they would like backed up at full resolution. I have been using Crashplan to do this for the last 4 years but, from the looks of Code 42's announceme...

Your nitpicking is amazing. It takes less than a minute. Does anyone actually care? Yeah, I know it is nitpicking but it does irritate me, especially when it is a service that they make you pay for. I spend all of my time at work analyzing the design of systems to improve workflow and save seconds ...

It is equally easy to do that with Xbox. Might I ask how? I even had to add a credit card to my account just to get the 360 games since I originally got G...

What is your WiFi setup like? I have had very issues like that with one of laptops before when my AP's band steering was on and set to "Push to 5GHz". One of my laptops would connect just fine to the 5GHz band but when I would try and watch Netflix, it would stutter and change playback bit...

It would work, its just too light for my existing furniture. Something like https://www.wayfair.com/South-Shore-City-Life-Audio-Rack-TH1927.html is probably what I will end up with since its tall and has room for tons of other stuff besides the receiver. I actually got my tape measure out (correction, I first bought a tape measure) and measured my receiver. It's actually only 17 inches wide and 14.5 inches deep (including the space that the banana plugs take up). Much smaller than the specs listed on Amazon. This opens up a whole bunch of extra opt...

Re: Need media bookcase/shelf suggestions

Since my TV is hung on the wall, the wires come out the side. If possible, I want to try to hide those wires partially using the cabinet, so I'd say about 5 feet tall ideally. My other option is to just get the plastic things that conceal wires and use that instead. What 36 inch one do you use? The...

Re: Issues with Moto X Pure since Dec '16 Security Update

So after a bunch of searching, I found that the most likely culprit for the Bluetooth issue is the Moto app. Disabling its voice command feature seems to have resolved the issue of Bluetooth turning off. So far, it has been about 18 hours without it needing to be turned back on, which I haven't been...

Re: Need media bookcase/shelf suggestions

Don't know exactly, but the measurements for my receiver are: 15.67 x 19.61 x 8.94 in (Sony DN850), but of course there's an extra 1.5 inches in the back for the banana plugs, so that first measurement is really about 17inches. I can manage a bit wider than that overall, and front to back isn't an ...

Re: Issues with Moto X Pure since Dec '16 Security Update

You're not going to like this option, but have you tried doing a factory reset of the phone? Sometimes it's the only way to clear out a borked software driver. I was hoping I wouldn't have to do that but I will give it a go if it comes to that. As for the notification issue, it seems to only affect...

I have this phone. I don't have this problem. Maybe its one of your apps or maybe your phone has a circuit problem. Issues with Moto X Pure since Dec '16 Security Update

Hi everyone, I have a Moto X Pure Edition (XT1575) and I been experiencing some really strange issues since the last security update. Re: Need media bookcase/shelf suggestions

So, I'm looking for something tall (to help hide TV wires), deep enough for my AV receiver (Sony DN850) and narrow enough to fit between my desk and the wall (maybe 2 feet). What is the maximum size (L x W x H) shelf that your space will support? I've been looking at additional bookshelves lately (...

It could be memory performance, but I'm mostly convinced that the lack of HT is just as big of a deal when it comes to 'feel'. This is something that you'd only be able to really quantify with frame-time analysis, and even that is difficult because many of your most demanding games are multiplayer....
