Re: SSD for laptops/office workstations

This is actually something I've been looking at lately. Mom's computer is an older Dell with a slow 3.5" drive and it desperately needs an SSD. It's old enough that it's most likely stuck at SATA 2 speeds, but for just web browsing & office programs, it'll be a big improvement. Oh, plus upg...

Re: Recommandations for DIY NAS HDDs

I got a bunch of the WD externals with 8TB plain WD Reds inside. I've only shucked 2 or 3 so far, and haven't put them in a NAS yet, but I did consolidate all my older WD Green storage drives onto one. Not really any complaints as far as noise.

Re: What's your highest "power on hours" HDD?

WD 1 TB Green WD10EADS with 40,371 hours. Hasn't been powered up since I copied everything off 2 years ago to build the new computer. It was the download target for torrents for quite a while. It was joined over time by Greens in 1.5, 2 and 3 TB flavors, though they were primarily bulk hot storage, ...

Re: Windows 10 DPC_Watchdog_Violation BSOD

LOL... well, they farted around with the board for about a week and couldn't reproduce the problem. Dunno, couldn't follow (or take the time) to follow the specifics I emailed them. So other than some super-secret squirrel BIOS update (most likely an unreleased one), they sent it back. Haven't had a...

Re: Disk Cloning software recommendation

I've used Reflect for years. Lately used it to consecutively clone one Win10 install to 2 new hard drives while doing some trouble shooting (original SSD to other SSD to yet another (nvme) SSD. Didn't want some huge interruption during the process. Once the hardware mess settles down, I'll go back t...

Right!? Once a day, every day... no more, no less. Not like they'll bother looking at it when I send it back.

Re: Windows 10 DPC_Watchdog_Violation BSOD

Moving to a different slot is still working? Yup. Moved the original 1060 down to the secondary x16(x8) slot with nothing in the primary x16 slot... 4 days later it's been running as expected. And it's still on the CX430 power supply. Even played a round of BattleTech, just in case... didn't bat an...

Re: Windows 10 DPC_Watchdog_Violation BSOD

Well... this is interesting. Since swapping the video card to the secondary x16 slot, 2 days ago, I haven't had the daily BSOD. Really screams motherboard now, primary x16 specifically.

Now figuring out the Gigabyte warranty process and if I limp on an older computer for the duration...

Re: Windows 10 DPC_Watchdog_Violation BSOD

Just for giggles I moved the 1060 to the secondary pcie x16 slot (still on the CX430 power supply). It's about the last change I can make with parts I have here. Any further testing would require a new 'spare' mobo/cpu/ram. Which then comes down to, just buy a newer generation CPU & mobo...? Oi....

Re: Windows 10 DPC_Watchdog_Violation BSOD

Of course, I can't explain why the BIOS couldn't find the boot drive. I'm just really beginning to think the motherboard is effed. The first time it lost the BIOS clock was an earlier time it lost the boot drive... I don't remember if it was when it switched from the original boot SSD to the cloned...

Re: Windows 10 DPC_Watchdog_Violation BSOD

*Le Sigh* New day, different power supply... same BSOD. I think I've now run out of parts that are interchangeable for testing purposes. This is the only mobo/cpu/ram combo of this variety (original 1151 cpu & DDR4). I wish there was a way to hammer the individual pieces to sort out which might ...

Re: Windows 10 DPC_Watchdog_Violation BSOD

Took the 'opportunity' presented by today's daily BSOD to break the computer out of the rats nest and drag it out to the garage to blow the case out. Oh, and finally extracted the alternate power supply from the donor machine. So now the Corsair CX430 is sitting in my problem child. By sometime tomo...

Re: Windows 10 DPC_Watchdog_Violation BSOD

TL;DR - always re-test memory even if it already checked out, when dealing with instability. Especially if that RAM is G.Skill. That's 6 DDR4-2400 DIMMs (two of them SO-DIMMs) that were fine 1 year and a half ago, and no longer are. I probably never ran MEMTEST originally, but I did 2 full runs onc...

Re: Windows 10 DPC_Watchdog_Violation BSOD

CPU, mobo, RAM, PSU. Overall, for nearly 2 years this thing was rebooted almost never, only occasionally for software reasons. Even the hardware hadn't been touched since some early hard drive consolidation. Computers don't age like a fine wine, they age like milk. Actually, when you mention that, ...

Re: Windows 10 DPC_Watchdog_Violation BSOD

My inclination is bad hardware. Interesting :( A couple of the BSODs straight up didn't even produce a dump file. They sat at the 'gathering info' part and then just rebooted. Any ideas which bit of hardware might be the suspect, if it is hardware? Overall, for nearly 2 years this thing was reboote...

Windows 10 DPC_Watchdog_Violation BSOD

On Dec 13 I allowed a reboot to install a couple software updates, one for Acrobat and also a few Windows things. In the last 2 years I've built 3 computers with the EVGA G2/G3 550W power supplies. Fully modular, and a semi-silent mode where unless I'm gaming the fan never spins up. Two of the last computers were in Fractal Design cases, mine was the Define R5 and the other was the Mini C. The Mini I did a coup...

AQuantia single port 10GBE cards are $90-$100 each. There was a black friday thing where I got 2 for $145 on Amazon. There are usually a fair selection of used more server grade stuff on ebay. There are a few reasonably priced switches with 2-4 10GBE ports and X-1GBE ports.... I've seen some as near...

Re: Do a stop-gap build? Or go whole hog? ("Pentium Gold" v. "Ryzen," and other curiosities)

The current build is an E8400 on a Gigabyte EP35C-DS3R motherboard. Ah, that brings back memories... I had the same processor & a DS3P motherboard until January 2017 when I finally got fed up with the BIOS chip needing to be jumped (I was happy for the dual BIOS!) every time I rebooted. Acciden...

I clearly don't have as much going on inside my computer. The computer itself is only 50-60 watts during my normal work day, and is probably closer to 180 watts when I'm gaming (According to my UPS anyway). I have a 550w EVGA G2 that pretty much never even turns on the fan... same with the Gigabyte ...
