Re: Putting together a quieter computer

Why is everyone recommending Seasonic? Is it because of the price/performance ratio? I remember reading that EVGA's power supplies provide super clean power so kinda confused why not even a single recommendation for EVGA. Mostly because you can go buy a Seasonic, and get the same/better performance...

Re: Putting together a quieter computer

Thank you for the great suggestions! So I'm pretty much set on: - PSU: Seasonic Platinum 80+ but a question: is 750 W optimal for the above? I don't want to use a PS that's overspecced for the build. Also, I see the one you linked has a big fan: does it pull the air from within the case? I don't pl...

Kernel 4.15.0-72, kernel panic on boot, Dell R710 Ubuntu

Had a kernel panic during boot with this release. Ubuntu 18.04, Dell R710, Xeon x5670.

Is there a way to log the stack trace, or is the stack trace saved to a default file location, when the kernel panic occurs early in the boot process?

Thanks.

Try the (maybe) easy stuff first... remove and reseat memory, remove the CPU and reseat it. Otherwise, as noted in other posts, a VRM or other key component may have died.

That headlamp definitely has a high nerd factor. If the flashlight is not redneck enough, back your car into the garage and turn the headlights on. Turn the car off of course, don't be a deadneck.

Wanted to post this here since I know there's gerbils knowledgeable enough to confirm. Looking for some parts links to mouser or digikey. I'm putting an LED light on my snowblower. Here's the light I bought. The snowblower generates electricity from a strator inside the flywheel. There's a single [...

Reseat everything if you can too. Marginal problems like this are just as likely to be a loose connection somewhere as they are to be faulty hardware. Poweroff on a cold boot but success the second time around sounds to me as if the normal boot settings are unstable and you're booting in BIOS safe ...

Very good quarterly earnings report. The stock market likes it too. 70 jump which is around 20%. Revenue is slightly down year over year but profitability is way up. Where I have very pessimistic thoughts however, is that revenue. Tesla sold +20% more cars, but made -8% as much revenue (!!). Clearl...

Son's 2-week-old HP Omen gaming system just started boot-looping. Symptoms (and HP's built-in diagnostics) all point to bad RAM. HP wants the whole system shipped back (at their expense) for warranty service. While that's not at all surprising, it's still an awfully costly way to replace a stick of...

Re: Is context switching speed the real reason behind Ryzen's success?

That's really interesting. How much of an effect that has is going to be very workload-dependent. It will give the Ryzen a significant edge on anything which makes a lot of system calls (which force context switches to enter the kernel). To (over) generalize, I'd say it is more likely to help on wo...

The ol' cooler paste/new heatsink fan repair. Did it on an old ASUS zenbook. New battery also. Great display, and 2 SSD in stripe RAID were worth keeping it alive for. Pooped all over a Macbook, performance-wise. Just couldn't let it die.
