Re: Is this possible?

To reclaim some space on your hard drive you might want to change a setting in synaptic. By default, synaptic caches all the packages it downloads until they are no longer available. I normally set it to delete the packages after installation as I don't tend to re-install a lot of things. To switch ...

Re: Ubuntu 7.10 hogging RAM

You can switch by pressing alt+F2 to get a run dialog box and then type metacity --replace This will switch the engine over to metacity. If you want to switch back to compiz then type compiz --replace You might be able to switch your theme from emerald using the themes option which is under System->...

There should be a menu that pops up before any OS starts to load. That menu is called a boot-loader. Either GRUB or LILO. For most people it doesn't matter which one. The most important thing is the order of installation that you did of your OSs. You have to install Windows first, then Linux. Otherw...

As I like strategy games, I don't see a console replacing my PC anytime soon. Not to mention I don't happen to have a HD tv sitting around to attach a nex-gen console to anyway.

I know that Mandriva, once known as Mandrake, has a gui for managing services that start-up automatically. It has a command center that has their configuration programs in. It also gives a description of each process/service so you have an idea if it is something you need running or not. The last ve...

Yes, unfortunately drivers under Linux can range from very easy to install to easy as long as you follow the instructions to the letter easy. I was going to suggest ubuntu "hoary" as another distro to try. If nothing else, then you get to enjoy synaptic, which is just the face that apt-get puts on w...

The big thing is to look through the documentation on mythtv's site, ignoring the parts about compiling from sources. I found a lot of answers there. The main steps after getting everything installed follows: (It has been a while, so I may be off on the order.) start backend as root run mythtv-setup...

It isn't bad at all to use. I have used Mythtv on both Libranet 2.8.1 and Ubuntu Hoary. The way that I do it is to add the following lines to /etc/apt/sources.list. deb http://dijkstra.csh.rit.edu/~mdz/debian unstable mythtv deb ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ unstable main Then you can use Syn...

I always had goood luck with mythtv. If you go with a debian based linux distro, you can add a repository to your sources.list and use apt-get to do all the work. Ubunutu (hoary) is very bleeding edge, so should hopefully have built-in support for all your hardware. I've had good luck with it, thoug...
