I use Linux-Mandrake, and I hooked up a cheap serial camera using the software that was included. I don't remember if it was unique to Mandrake or part of KDE. I do remember that it was pretty easy -- all graphical setup, just like Windows. It's been a while since I played with flash card readers. I...

Well...Linux appears to support your camera. :D If all else fails, at least that's an option.

Does the camera have removable storage, like CompactFlash? If so, that's your best bet. Get a CF reader for your PC, and use the memory card to transfer the files.

Hmmm, interesting question, ANApex. Let me preface this by saying that I'm only the most casual dilettante when it comes to computer-based live action video. But I'll be happy to share what little I know. I do know that the direct rendering infrastructure (DRI for short) plays a big role in the TV v...

Thanks DiMaestro! I've put a lot of hours into researching UNIX and its progeny. It's a fascinating story that deserves to be told, and told accurately. Isn't it ironic that the most powerful and versatile OS of all time was originally considered to be castrated in comparison to MULTICS?

BigMadDrongo, if one of your computers is freezing, then it isn't stable at all! It looks like your Windows 98 box is having the problem, so the obvious thing to do is to back up your data and do a fresh, clean Windows 98 install on that box. If the problem come back, then you can be sure that it's ...

At this point I think it's best to have a little tutorial on how X works. The X Window System is a client / server framework, like many network applications these days. While it's a common misconception that servers are large computers, the actual server is a software process, not the hardware itsel...

I'm not really sure what you're driving at, but I'll venture a guess. Are you wanting to see your Linux desktop remotely, like you can with pcAnywhere for Windows? The main difference for me is that with DSL I had to constantly order new service as the next DSL provider dropped dead. With Cable there hasn't been any drama. One of the reasons why I like Mandrake is because the whole distribution is optimized for a Pentium system. Since your Overdrive CPU is Pentium on the inside, Mandrake will make the best use of what it has to offer. The key here is to pick and choose to achieve best results. Instead of installing KD...

If I had to do an install in front of my systems team at work, I would not want to present such a huge variety of options. I'd want to show them a far more slimmed down distro like NetBSD, FreeBSD, Lycoris or Debian. I used to use Caldera for that sort of thing -- a nice, clean setup and interface ...
