I think gross misconduct is far tighter than that. As far as I know it is more along the lines of gross criminal negligence, physical assault, outright fraud, ie criminal behaviour rather than bad behaviour. I'm sure you're right - I was just trying to think of examples. Breach of NDA can definitel...

Maybe I'm deluded, but I'm pretty sure that companies in the UK couldn't pull this kind of stunt. Over here, as far as I know, summary dismissal (i.e. firing) can only happen if you've committed gross misconduct - leaking confidential information, persistently coming in late, sabotage or something. ...

I don't know about that exact behaviour, but a very similar trick that I use a lot is reverse history search. At the bash prompt, hit Ctrl-R, then type 'man'. As you type, bash will search backwards through your command history for what you have typed, displaying its current match on the command lin...

Only thing I can see persuading me to run Vista would be a game I really want to play being significantly prettier under DX10 (I am a sucker for nice graphics), or worse, requiring Vista. Hopefully Supreme Commander will not fall into the former category... (Though I don't know if I can bear to buy ...

Wait, I just downloaded the new Firefox after reading this and I don't see any difference. What are you doing exactly? Turns out it's not Firefox he's complaining about, it's the web app he uses for email. Either the web app has had a new feature added, or it had it all along but was suppressing th...

Ah k. What was the last version of Firefox you had - 1.0.x, 1.5.x or 2.0.x? If you went from 2.0.x to 2.0.y (y > x) I'd be surprised if that changed anything; otherwise maybe there's a new capability in 2.0 that the web app is taking advantage of that wasn't there in 1.5. Are you sure the AJAX app i...

I'm curious as to what you mean by "the new Mozilla", since pedantically there is no longer any software called "Mozilla". Are you referring to the recently-released version 1.1 of the Seamonkey Suite? I didn't know that the mail app in that had tabs, or that they'd added any kind of graphical bling...

I'm posher on the phone because it's hard to understand someone on the other end if they're talking through their nose. I can stretch to agree that the "o" in horrible and hot respectively probably should sound slightly different. Sure, being at the same aspect ratio means it won't distort shapes when stretching, but it'll still look like you're viewing the image through frosted glass. Battle Royale is excellent. Sounds like violence simply for the sake of violence if you ask me. Which is sick and disturbing. Surely logging in is your router's job? And is done once, when the router boots up (i.e. about once per firmware upgrade or power outage)?

Core Duo on XP Home?

A friend of mine is looking for a new laptop. She's found a pretty good deal from Dell and wanted me to take a look at the specs for her. I gave it the once-over and nodded approvingly when I saw it had a Core Duo. Creamy smoothness all round. Then I noticed the machine shipped with Windows XP Home....
