Re: Recommended NAS Devices

I'm doing something similar for a NAS which is going to be primarily for backups, music and photo archiving. It's a DIY project with a small form factor, mini-itx build using this case InWin MS04 which has four (3.5") swap bays and room to add two (2.5") drives. It is coming together well ...

Re: Anyone repair anything today?

Seems odd since the temperature here in NJ is starting to creep up from of the low single digit temps we had over the weekend. I guess ice formed up near the outlet and caused some intense back pressure on the weak joint? Looks to me like the joint was freezing up and cracked the elbow, then water ...

Oh, the joys of home ownership and winter weather..... Water pipe burst this evening. Not yet repaired but I was able to isolate quick enough thank goodness. https://s10.postimg.org/umx9g7a6h/DSCN7050.jpg Seems odd since the temperature here in NJ is starting to creep up from of the low single...

Re: Digital Dark Age in Physical Storage?

Burned CD/DVD/BD-ROMs are more of a question mark; however, I have an anecdotal data point for that as well. About 15 years ago I ripped my entire music collection (up to that point), encoded everything to MP3, and archived the raw WAV rips to DVD-ROM (disk space was a lot more expensive back then)...

Digital Dark Age in Physical Storage?

I read an article this morning about scientists warning of a digital dark age with current digital media at risk of disappearing over time. I always thought optical media would last longer than magnetic if taken care of and not scratched up but they say otherwise. They mention synthetic DNA technolo...

Re: DYMT: Imi's Legacy

Why would anyone intentionally submit themselves to Orlando in August? Philadelphia is humid as all hell, but at least it never gets brutally hot. Vegas, on the other hand, is always hot and sometimes unbearable but there's no humidity at all. It's nice to never get sticky. If I could live anywhere...

It's possible you left some skin attached to that metal. In other goings-on, I plan to brew my first ever Wheatwine this weekend. Strangely, it is a style I have never brewed before (I have brewed most other ale styles at least once). I plan to split the batch and age half of it on Bourbon-soaked o...

Re: Gun prOn!

I finally got a chance to put some rounds through the RM380 and I firmly love it. Overall I'd give it a 9/10. It was actually enjoyable to shoot, which was a pleasant surprise. I was not originally planning on picking up any FMJ ammo for target shooting, but I guess I will now. Hickok45 gave it a d...

Re: STAR WARS TIME!

Tried to watch Star Wars IV A New Hope yesterday, and when Luke appeared on screen the entire feeling was different. All I could see was old man who drank green tinged milk from the tit of a weird looking walrus . Thanks Rian Johnson, you completely destroyed Star Wars. Even the prequels did not do...

Re: STAR WARS TIME!

Well, I saw it over the weekend and as expected the feelings are mixed and just more questions to why they went that way with the story. I do want to see it again at home later when it's released. I understand why Mark Hamill did not like Luke's character in this episode. The negatives listed here a...

Re: STAR WARS TIME!

Yep, the audience reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are pretty polarized either loving it or hating it 50/50. It may be like some movies worth seeing more than once? Like when I watched "Napolean Dynamite" after hearing the hype and on first watch I was thinking that was weird and stupid. Then on...

I'm taking my kids to see Last Jedi this Sunday as well. My daughter's birthday coincides with the December releases so we go to the theater each year for her. Before the iron age of civilizations there was a cosmic magical property attributed to meteorite material since it was much more durable than the bronze weapons. If I had a choice I think a sort of blade would be more appropriate with homage to Tolkien's "Anglachel and Anguirel"

I think the OP was just pandering expecting a large number of "OMG ME TOO" responses and to my delight, the realities of real life kicked in. People are diverse. We don't live in a trope of what a 'real' nerd should be. That's a small mindset. http://reddit.com/r/gatekeeping or the "...

Hey Kougar, check out Massdrop.com. They have an active audiophile community with discussion boards covering the earbud types through circumaural version phones.
I signed up with them a few months ago and did a couple drops on personal audio items.

I do the pre-packaged K-cups these days since I lack patience to brew it in the mornings. Re: Gun prOn!

I had a CZ-75 and I regret selling it. It's a superior pistol to the M9 Beretta IMO. I agree, I own the Beretta M9 as well. I don't recommend the Beretta 92 series unless you like a large bulky hand gun since there are so many better designed 9mm firearms out there. For the time (cold war era) it w...

Has anyone here shot the CZ P-09? ( suppressor-ready / no suppressor ) I like the way it looks and it sounds like it has a reasonably low bore-axis and is quite accurate out of the box? edit: just got this in some sort of corporate blast email: "if you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough." I don't think that's always true, and I don't think it's the case here, but it's an interesting way to make you check your own knowledge. I found that I really...

My previous gaming PC (micro-ATX) included a Sound Blaster Zx . My current gaming PC (mini-ITX) has no available PCIe slot, so I'm using the Realtek ALC1150 integrated into the GA-Z170N-Gaming 5 to drive my old Logitech Z-640 5.1-channel speakers. I plug in my ancient Sennheiser HD430 headphones fo...

Re: So is the sound card dead?

My question was about USB alternatives to sound cards. Are there reviews of latency, jitter, etc on them - and does it matter? Yes, final source is important but the whole stream matters once you reach a level of quality with headphones, etc. The Audioquest Jitterbug - which I had my doubts about -...

Re: Econo box with less gaming focus

I mean... you're budgeting $190 on a CPU=dGPU. If they don't want the kid gaming, would an Intel option with dGPU be better at all? Just a question. IIRC, you can play DOTA2 and LoL just fine from the Intel IGP. That's how I'm basing a build for my niece on the mobo/CPU combo I mentioned above. She...

I use Creative's Soundblaster-Zx sound card with 70 Watt RMS/140 W Peak Logitech X-540 speakers, 5.1 setup. If your are in a tight space or small room a nice 2.1 setup would be fine. Logitech does make cheapo basic speakers but their X and Z series are built solid. I've had my X-540 set for over 10 ...
