Re: College Football 2017

This is what makes college football great: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pLZrs2rkwM As a Gator Engineering alumni too I was so glad to see something to get excited about!!! I've been disappointed in their offense last few seasons so I'm hoping this will boost morale and get them going. My brothe...

Re: Stay Safe!

Central Florida is dotted with hundreds and hundreds of lakes. Every time a sinkhole opens up, it creates another lake. (Except for the rare times that it remains a dry millhopper.) I enjoyed swimming in many of the natural springs and sinkholes around the Gainseville and Ocala National Forest area...

Re: Stay Safe!

Surely you mean Katrina? That said, despite my inability to name the named storm, it has been since 2005 since the US mainland took a good whack from a hurricane. Odds, chaotic processes, and all that. Yeah, 2005 was a rough year for the gulf states with multiple hurricanes. Growing up in FL I hear...

True, the impact of the storm is unprecedented for that area. My wife's parents and brother were able to drive out yesterday and are headed up north to stay with us until the city of Beaumont can recover. The city water system is still compromised but more roads are opening up now to get the supplie...

I was living in SE Texas when tropical storm Allison in 2001 caused around 3' of rain non-stop for a week and it was a mess. Harvey is exceeding that since it is stalling out over that region and not dissipating. They call it a "rain train" down there when a weather event like that keeps d...

If I remember correctly Rambus (RDRAM) was made for Pentium-4's at that time but there were heat or some latency problems? I never used RDRAM so I don't know all the issues.

Re: Best motherboard for Netburst CPU?

LGA 775 had a fairly long life through different Intel chipsets. I would check motherboard manufacturer websites to see the supported CPUs and latest BIOS updates for a particular model. These are going on 10yrs and older so it may be archived in their support files. I'm using an Abit P35 for a NAS ...

Search/compare on Newegg and purchase on Amazon. True, the "power search" on Newegg has been one of the better ways to narrow down what you need for tech. I was primarily purchasing from Newegg since 2003 for the tax savings then that ended a few years ago when they opened more distro cen...

An air compressor with a good impact wrench works magic on bolts like that. Done are my days with 6 foot levers and lots of weight only to break tools and/or snap bolts. PB Blaster + impact wrench == unstuck bolt. :) I recently tried that method along with a hand-held torch to heat and cool some co...

I tried the simple binocular method and it worked since we had a fairly clear sky for most of the day in NJ where we had 75% of the totality. Then some clouds came in right after the peak moon coverage so I was also able to get a direct photo on my phone's camera. Very interesting day and we got a l...

Wouldn't a 6800K be the best price performance right now? It was under $400 last I checked, and if you're only running one video card the PCIe deficit isn't material. 6850K prices are dropping too if you need more than 28 PCIe lanes. I picked one on eBay recently <$350. I needed a few more PCIe lan...

Hopefully we are past the 4GB confusion by now. To recap: The OP didn't highlight any issue with addressing 4G. but the fact that the GX970 is suffering performance issues >3.2GB, while the 980 doesnt. I dont think any game truly leverage >3GB today (its mostly texture cache) , so even if nvidia, i...

My first console was the Colecovision during the early 1980's. Reading the linked article it's funny to see it was originally the Connecticut Leather Company. Atari was the leader in home consoles back then but Colecovision's home version of Donkey Kong was a hit. My other favorites on the Colecovis...

Haven't seen any in depth power testing on other tech sites yet, mostly general reviews of the X299 boards so far. I also noticed the different power connections between the board makers and wondering how these will compare. ASUS, ASRock and Gigabyte displayed previews of their X399's at Computex or...

Or does this makes too much sense for a large corporation to do? Yes, stop making sense already :) I agree it is annoying what Intel is doing with Core-X. HEDT-CPUs should all have enough PCIe lanes to run a wide variety of add-in parts. On one hand, I do like the new X299 motherboard capabilities ...

I keep some in the house and eat it from time to time. I agree with pps, it has a strong flavor and it's very salty. I don't know how much sodium a can has, but I suspect it's the daily allowance for a week. I like the individual foil packs they sell. Those are handy when you want to just put it on...

Current MRE bags are rated 3 years but certain items like applesauce and cheese can already turn nasty colors like black within that time. If you can keep them cool in storage I'd still not eat anything wet after ~5 years (the dry crackers would last about forever). I can vouch for the shelf-life o...
