Re: Other folks falling asleep when talking computers.

edit: just got this in some sort of corporate blast email: "if you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough." I don't think that's always true, and I don't think it's the case here, but it's an interesting way to make you check your own knowledge. I found that I really...

Re: What is your sound set up?

My previous gaming PC (micro-ATX) included a Sound Blaster Zx . My current gaming PC (mini-ITX) has no available PCIe slot, so I'm using the Realtek ALC1150 integrated into the GA-Z170N-Gaming 5 to drive my old Logitech Z-640 5.1-channel speakers. I plug in my ancient Sennheiser HD430 headphones fo...

Re: So is the sound card dead?

My question was about USB alternatives to sound cards. Are there reviews of latency, jitter, etc on them - and does it matter? Yes, final source is important but the whole stream matters once you reach a level of quality with headphones, etc. The Audioquest Jitterbug - which I had my doubts about -...

Re: Econo box with less gaming focus

I mean... you're budgeting $190 on a CPU=dGPU. If they don't want the kid gaming, would an Intel option with dGPU be better at all? Just a question. IIRC, you can play DOTA2 and LoL just fine from the Intel IGP. That's how I'm basing a build for my niece on the mobo/CPU combo I mentioned above. She...

Re: Econo box with less gaming focus

Wait for Raven Ridge? It's a Christmas gift so that's a dicey proposition. Same here, last holiday season I built a gaming system for my nephew. This time my sister-in-law's daughter wants a system for home schooling and moderate on-line gaming with my daughters. I picked up this mobo/CPU combo at ...

Yep, Gator Athletic Dept is not going to put up with that many losses for long. I did not watch the FL-GA game since it would be so one-sided.
Oh well, FSU is not doing well either so maybe it'll be a game to see over the Thanksgiving break...

Re: What is your sound set up?

I use Creative's Soundblaster-Zx sound card with 70 Watt RMS/140 W Peak Logitech X-540 speakers, 5.1 setup. If your are in a tight space or small room a nice 2.1 setup would be fine. Logitech does make cheapo basic speakers but their X and Z series are built solid. I've had my X-540 set for over 10 ...

Whoa, did not know Wolfenstein goes back even further into the 1980's. I played a little bit on Apple II's but it was mainly only this game:

Re: Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus – PC Specs and Features

I've always enjoyed the Wolfenstein series games ever since the DOS days:

It was ID's predecessor to DOOM and pretty much jump started all the 3D first-person shooter style games.

Re: Windows 10 Fall Update Build 1709

Just finished the update on my home PC. It did take a while to download and install but could be due to several users doing the same. I usually open my Task Manager to keep an eye on processes and I noticed some new additions to the Performance tab which includes a GPU monitor now. http://i65.tinypi...

Re: Obsolete IT in the wild

Lab equipment is the worst. Electron microscopes and scintillation counters are among the worst. The technology has been around for a long time, new machines are still rather expensive, but they not noticeably better than the old equipment. The real pain comes in trying to get the data off of these...

Re: Obsolete IT in the wild

You obviously haven't been in the DoD world. I've seen stuff being used for missions from the 80's. Nuclear stuff is even older. Yup, if you wanna see some really old tech go work in the defense sector. Yes, they get the latest toys too; but once something works they tend to stick with it forever. ...

Re: Anybody recycle old LCD monitors?

All, thanks for the feedback. Yeah these are so cheap now these days it is not worth the hassle. There's a recycle/recovery center not far from me so that's where these will go.
Seems not long ago these 19" LCDs were the cutting edge and 10 times the cost.

Anybody recycle old LCD monitors?

I have two Hanns-G 19" LCD monitors that went bad about the same time. I know...these were cheapo specials and I got them for my kids. They performed well enough for a few years and then both started flickering. Looked up the issue and it seems to be the capacitors going bad/bulging over time. ...

Hello - please post some suggestion for best USB wifi adapter. Is ASUS USB-N13 N300 any good? Thanks Are you limited to only a USB connection? If you have a spare PCIe slot on a motherboard I'd recommend a PCIe wifi adapter. I use the ASUS PCE-AC68 and it has been a good performer and comes with a ...

I've been with the same carrier since 2000 and have not really evolved much since I'm only on my third smartphone. Originally signed with Voice Stream with Ericsson basic flip-phone (remember Jamie Lee Curtis?) and it became T-Mobile a few years later (then advertised by Catherine Zeta-Jones). Since...

Central Florida is dotted with hundreds and hundreds of lakes. Every time a sinkhole opens up, it creates another lake. (Except for the rare times that it remains a dry millhopper.) I enjoyed swimming in many of the natural springs and sinkholes around the Gainseville and Ocala National Forest area...
