Re: Highest I should go with stock cooling?

UPDATE: THAT was a mini-nightmare! Apparently I forgot that I had enabled an on-board feature called "OC Genie", and my proc was already going at 4GhZ, even though windows was still reporting 3.5... and messing with the OC features manually gummed up the works! Luckily, I was able to reset...

Re: Highest I should go with stock cooling?

So raise the clock, not the voltage. Good to know! Heretic: I can remove the right-side panel and access the back of the mobo, but there's SO many cables and crap shoved in the way. Though I guess it's more feasible that I originally imagined, so maybe it wouldn't be such a huge pain to get a new co...

Highest I should go with stock cooling?

So I've got an i5 4690K, and it seems to run around ~60c at peak (though my fan has to run at full power to keep it there or lower). I've read that ~80 is when you start getting into issues, so I wanted to ask if it would be safe to up my clock speeds a bit? Though I also imagine that it's possible ...

The secret to a "Smooth" 60fps?

So I've noticed something, and it's begun to bug me. No matter what game I play (GTA V, CS:GO, Skyrim), and no matter my config or settings (Currently have a i5 4690K, GeForce 970, and 8 Gb ram), and no matter what fps is being reported in-game (60, 80, 100, w/e), my play experience never looks as &...

Re: Recovering deleted e-mails from Outlook 2k3 - it bugged

JBI: No backups that I'm aware of. I also haven't been able to find an .ost file anywhere. I tried Juampa's idea... scanpst didn't do anything, but iIve not yet had an opportunity to try the other options. The .pst file seems awfully large, though, so I'm thinking the old e-mails are buried in there...

Recovering deleted e-mails from Outlook 2k3 - it bugged out

So, my boss accidentally deleted her entire inbox in Outlook (2003 version). No problem, I thought. Just find them in the "deleted files" folder, select them all, right-click, and hit "move to" -> "Inbox". Sounds pretty basic, right? Except when I did that, a New E-Mail...

Re: Help me choose wisely!

Maybe it was a 640 and I got the numbers backwards? Yeah, that's probably it. Sorry about that!

So, new power-suply, then? Oy. It was enough of a pain in the butt plugging everything in. Un-plugging and re-plugging everything doesn't sound like my idea of a good time!

Re: Sell me on Intel.

Thanks for that! Yeah, my temps are a lot better under windows. Still, if I ever want to OC this thing, I'll have to get a new cooler. Just thought I'd mention though, should anyone else try to DL the program in that link, my AVG went off on it, something about a URL embedded in the download...? I d...

Re: Sell me on Intel.

Hey guys. I didn't want to make a new thread, but hopefully I can get an answer regarding a concern I have. According to this post: http://techreport.com/review/27543/cooler-master-hyper-d92-cpu-cooler-reviewed/3 The same chip I now have runs at 30 degrees idle with a stock heatsink. HOWEVER, my BIO...

Re: Help me choose wisely!

Well, I promised some benchmarks... unfortunately I haven't had the time/patience to record all my before-and-afters, but I did manage a few notes. A few times i did multiple tests and averaged out the results. I used in-program benchmarking tools where possible. The old system was an Athlon x4 460 ...

Re: Sell me on Intel.

Update: I got most of my new rig in except for the graphics card. Just for giggles, I put it together and ran a few before-and-after benchmarks. And WOW, does the i5-4690 blow my old AMD out of the water! Mind you, its the same Memory, HDs and Graphics card, but I've gotten nearly TWICE the FPS i wa...

I suppose a simple "because good is dumb" from Spaceballs would be too trite by this point? But I like cookies anyway =) Also, maybe I should edit the OP to indicate that I've already purchased my new system and am awaiting delivery, though I'm wondering if I should have taken a risk with ...

Re: Sell me on Intel.

Once the i5-750 came out in 2009 it was game over for AMD, let alone Sandy bridge and later. Even the early adopters who invested in OCing i7-920s back in 2008 still has a capable system now despite the much steeper cost then, while anything AMD from that timeframe is junk way before today. Whoa, 2...

Re: Sell me on Intel.

I am not sure sure why anyone would need to convinced of Intel. Its just so much better. The only place it wins is budget gpu/opencl. Well, I've been an AMD die hard since I first started making my own systems close to 2 decades ago (closer to 16/17 years really, but I like to exaggerate), and tbh ...

Re: Help me choose wisely!

Well, I took the plunge: Got an MSI board instead of the Asrock, and an EVGA Card instead of the MSI version, but over all it's roughly the same. Thanks to everyone for their input, I really appreciate it!

I'll try to remember to post some benchmarks when I get it all together =)

Re: Help me choose wisely!

Derub: I unfortunately do not live near a microcenter. The closest one is in another state and transportation is an issue (ie i have none). Anyway, I go bigger on boards/cases because I'm trying to be conscious of airflow and ease-of-use. Though I'll admit familiarity plays a role. Also, given the s...

Re: Help me choose wisely!

Thanks for the vid card recommendation! It's almost exactly the same as the MSI, but an inch shorter, which is really, really good seeing as space is at a premium these days. I'll pay an extra $10 to make sure i have room to plug it in! I'm not a huge Asrock fan, but I'll admit, my only reason for c...

RIght-on! So, as a follow-up to this thread: http://techreport.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=101028 (tl;dr Intel rules, AMD drools), I have some further concerns and wish to get the best bang for my buck. I'm trying to be budget-conscious while trying to future-proof... but that's apparently no...

Re: Sell me on Intel.

Lots to chew on here. Derub, the site I found was CPUBoss or something like that, but thanks for the anand link, though! My current spec is an AMD X4 630 2.8 GhZ (that's slightly OC'd) on a Gigabyte GA-770TA-UD3 (which doesn't seem to support any AM3+ procs), 8g ram and a GeForce GTX 460 (786 ram ve...

Re: Sell me on Intel.

Yeats: Most of the benchmarks I've found just have lists of All The Things (except for the specific products I was looking at) and were a bit much overwhelming to look at, though they clearly showed that intel chips had a performance edge. However, I did another search and found a site that lets me ...

Sell me on Intel.

Hey everyone, I have a dilemma. In researching my latest full-scale upgrade, I've seen a LOT of folks... I don't wanna say "bashing" AMD, but it's clear that enthusiasts favor Intel a lot more these days (If someone told me a decade ago that this would happen I woulda laughed in their face...

Thanks to everyone in this thread, I've decided to hold off for now! This 900-series really has me intrigued, but it's too rich for my blood at the moment. Maybe if I save up, getting it won't break the bank too much =) Thanks again, everybody!

Re: So, sell me on a new graphics card.

Hmm, lots of info to chew on here. I probably should have mentioned that I don't have a large enough budget to justify spending more than ~$200 on a graphics card, especially if it's looking like I'll need to do a full-system upgrade in the near future anyway. So the 900-series is not an option for ...

So, sell me on a new graphics card.

A bit of background: I'm currently running a Geforce GTX 460 (I'll post full specs at the end of this post), and for the most part, it does its job well. CS:GO, Batman: Arkham games, GTA4, Skyrim, all run at a smooth ~60fps (1920 x 1080) with a decent amount of detail (some things set to max, others...

Re: Computer slow to access network on start-up

So... Check HD (space/defrag/PIO - btw, I never knew that was a thing and reading up on it, it sounds a lot like what's going on!) Check Task manager on start-up Check network cable(s) Okay, sounds pretty comprehensive but also nothing too time-consuming. I'll report back if I'm still having issues....
