Re: 5 nm chips in 2020

https://www.anandtech.com/show/15217/intels-manufacturing-roadmap-from-2019-to-2029 This is the first mention on 1.4nm in the context of Intel on any Intel-related slide. For context, if that 1.4nm is indicative of any actual feature, would be the equivalent of 12 silicon atoms across. https://www....

Re: 5 nm chips in 2020

Rumor is that 5nm test runs are already yielding better than 7nm: https://wccftech.com/amd-zen-4-5-nm-launching-2021/ I find that a little hard to believe, but if it is anywhere close to being true, that bodes well for next-gen AMD parts. Maybe the explanation is EUV. Allegedly Intel will reach 7nm...

When the wife and I reviewed stuff, the only payment was keeping the parts. Sometimes you came out ahead of minimum wage. Sometimes you came out far behind. Writing a good review takes A LOT more time than most would guess - it's only a good unpaid job if you're bored in college or jobless... The o...

EPYC 7H12 looks strong in geekbench. https://hothardware.com/news/amd-64-core-epyc-7h12-cpus-benchmarked-cray-supercomputer Looks like that's Geekbench 4 rather than 5. I have the impression that Geekbench 4 scales linearly with CPU cores whereas 5 doesn't. I guess which is more appropriate... &quo...

Nice.

They're raising the price on the 24 and 32 core Threadrippers, but the performance gains may very well justify it. I look forward to reviews.

Re: Intel Earnings

Intel could always give up on the CPU business, sell their x86 license off to nVidia and become a GPU company first and foremost. Wow. Turns out Intel is doing exactly that, except not just GPU but other things too. Guess they are tired and bored of trying to eke out 5% to 10% performance gains fro...

Re: AMD Earnings

You'd think that with the history of Netburst as a cautionary tale, they would've been able to avoid going down the Bulldozer rabbit hole. I've never really understood the thought process that led to that. (But that said, after they iterated on the design with Piledriver it wasn't *that* bad. Unfor...

Re: AMD Earnings

It is hard to be ruthlessly competitive when you are a distant 2nd place, in an industry with very high overhead (fabs). Hitching their wagon to TSMC's fabs may be the best thing that has happened to them in over a decade (maybe ever). Hmm... at first I was going to agree, but then I started thinki...

Yeah, but GF didn't have the high-volume, high-margin customers that TSMC has. TSMC has Apple, Huwaei, Qualcomm, and AMD. GF had AMD and... chirp, chirp. Did GF just run out of money, or did they find they had been going down a failed path and not have enough money to restart from the beginning? If...

Re: Zen 2 Threadripper talk and news (rumors too)

Eight memory channels make the motherboard dramatically more expensive, so I'd guess it's a little of that and an Epyc differentiator. It is more expensive, but then again so is buying a second system. So far, two key differentiators between TR and Epyc have been more clock speed for TR but more me...

Re: AMD EPYC 7002 - Rome wasn't built at 14 nm

4 threads per core would be interesting. It's yet another way to get the most throughput out of the CCXs that can clock the highest (assuming your workload isn't super resource intensive). I believe SMT helps with memory latency, too, which makes sense with all them cores. It helps mask memory late...
