Re: AMD EPYC 7002 - Rome wasn't built at 14 nm

It is the K8 Operton all over again. AMD has very compelling options in 1P/2P market if your organization is scheduled for an upgrade/overhaul. Intel doesn't have a viable competitor at current price/performance ranges and will likely not have one until 2021-2022. The only way for Intel to fight it...

Re: AMD EPYC 7002 - Rome wasn't built at 14 nm

I also read the Phoronix review. Man, this thing is a beast. In everything but the most heavily optimized AVX-512 tests, the new Epyc absolutely crushes Xeon by every available metric. From my Apple-user perspective, it looks like Apple made a big mistake going with Intel in the new Mac Pro. The Mac...

https://hothardware.com/reviews/amd-epyc-7002-series-architecture-overview EPYC 7002 series processors consist of 9 dies altogether (8 x CPU dies + 1 IO die) and max out with 64 physical cores per socket (128 threads). Rome maintains platform compatibility with existing first-gen EPYC parts, but si...

Re: Something's different...

I've been writing the occasional review for HotHardware for a month now. The forums are pretty dead, though, so there's not any engagement. FWIW I think the people in charge there are genuinely good people, good to work with, at least. If people were to occupy a forum, I'd pick that one since it's ...

Re: Something's different...

I'm curious -- are there other tech sites people are spending more time at during this TR Dark Age? If so, which ones?

I'm especially curious to know if folks know of another site with TR-esque discussion forums (I mean in terms of content/people, not the mechanics of the site)?

Re: Something's different...

FYI to those that care, I've elected of my own accord to bow out of the front page comment game. Whatever you see or don't see there has nothing to do with me anymore. The front page layout and comments are too cumbersome to use. I come here once a week instead of front page everyday. Agreed -- it'...

Re: Something's different...

Today's article, OMG. WTF was that? That was the Internet version of a grilled cheese sandwich. It's not going to sustain you, but for a little while it can fool your body into thinking you've had real food by providing something that fills a little space and has a familiar texture. Or was it searc...

Oh I was right there with you on ARM-based Macs, and I still think they're an inevitable eventuality. I don't know... I think the most compelling time for Apple to introduce ARM-based Macs was maybe last year or, at the latest, this year. From what we know of Sunny Cove, it sounds like a pretty com...

Re: Something's different...

...... I'm confident that we could do the same thing for future contributors looking to help get TR back in fighting shape by writing up something they're an expert in. I'd be happy to manage that as some kind of ongoing series. In summary, old-school TR is still looking out for itself, but at leas...

Re: Earnings Q2 2019

Maybe. We'll see. Both the MBA and the MP are examples of "getting woefully out of date before being upgraded", and those things need to see regular upgrades before I'm willing to rescind my statement. I do agree that dumping both Jony Ive and his awful butterfly key switches will help. V...

Re: Earnings Q2 2019

3. Glad to see Mac sales up. Hopefully the wandering in the desert has ended and Apple will consistently progress this platform. I figured this was a serious thread right up until I got here. The only consistency in the Mac lineup is that it'll get woefully out of date before it gets updated, and t...

Re: Something's different...

Afraid it's not going to get help. AFAIK it's intentionally doing that as a play to convince other bots that TR is more active than it is. This is not something we've been told by the new PHBs, just something we're guessing at. Hopefully, when some more writers are brought in, they will stop playin...

Earnings Q2 2019

Apple and AMD reported earnings yesterday. Some thoughts: 1. AMD is a solid break even company. That’s better than a company losing money hand over fist. So, yay? But will these guys ever get to a point where they are a solidly profitable company? If so, when? I’m wondering if the stock price has go...

Wow, comparing a server CPU to D-Day, with AMD cast as the goddamn Nazis. This is a new low for you, you ridiculous troll. What role do you picture yourself as? Plucky Spitfire pilot? Winston Churchill, harrumphing away in the background? Or are you the man on the ground, storming the beaches of No...

Re: Something's different...

I think a sustainable community-driven site that could frequently produce old-school in-depth TR quality content is pretty much a pipe dream. You'd need 10x as many subs each donating twice as much to get anywhere near the revenue that TR used to have when it could pay 3-4 full time staff (and that...

So many things could have been done differently, and if things were handled differently I know I would have been sure to put a lot more money in than I have and many other gerbils would have done so also. Re: Something's different...

If, at some point, we could get a rough idea of the scale of the cost of running the site as it was/is, that would be invaluable. If subs carried a few percent, are we talking $50k a year total? $200k? I understand it probably can't be posted exactly, but I think it's one of the problems with this ...

Re: Official: Ryzen 3700X and 3900X review comments

Thanks for the review! As always, the summary charts at the end showing price/performance for productivity vs gaming is an excellent feature. In staring at those charts, I'm struck by the (in some ways surprising) strength of Intel's position due to gaming performance. I'm not a gamer, but realistic...
