Re: Deleted partition! Need help with recovery!

Ok, I was using GetDataBack (which was working, btw!) and moved the laptop by accident. It caused a screw up in the program and now I can't mount it on Windows. What's funny is that Mac OS sees everything I've recovered so far just fine. Is there any way to fix that? I tried a couple of different Wi...

I tried Test Disk. It also gets just parts and pieces of files much like other programs I've listed.

Deleted partition! Need help with recovery!

I have an external RAID setup on my Mac. It's an NTFS drive with writing privileges (moved it over from a Windows machine when I moved to Mac). I had about 2TB of various data on it including music, pics, etc. Today I was playing with scripts and by accident I used rm -rf on my drive. After I realiz...

Re: Never saw an IPS display

I have an old dell 2001 'ultrasharp' which is IPS - still in use as a second monitor in my office. A fine piece of kit. I have one of those too. I believe it's an S-IPS panel actually. It's 10.5 years old now (bought it in early 2004) and my buddy still uses it every day after I gave it to him a fe...

Re: What is a good beginning Mac?

A new Mac isn't the best proposition unless you like to spend money. Go with a used one for sure, much better value. They're still not as cheap as PCs but they're certainly built much better than most PCs as well. Depending on what you need to do I would go with a 13in non-Retina Macbook Pro. Good m...

Re: For those who think RAM prices are high..

My first ever self-installed upgrade was 1MB RAM that doubled the memory of my 386SX/33. It cost a whopping $100 at Egghead Software around 1994. Another major upgrade was a 1MB Cirrus Logic videocard that allowed me to play SimCity 2000. Don't even remember how much it cost but probably under $100.

Re: Need to build a mini PC

Pretty sure I found what I was looking for. It's the Brix labeled GB-BXI3H-4010. Note the H in the label. That means it supports 2.5in SATA drives. It's an i3 that takes sodimms. Only issues is that wifi card I believe but it's replaceable. The kit costs about $330 total on Amazon.

Re: Need to build a mini PC

I have laptop RAM only (sodimms) so anything that uses desktop RAM is out. I'd prefer an already built machine with the smallest foot print. Would i3 be enough to run all of the stuff I need? This is going to be used by my mom who is not a very demanding user as long as soap operas run well. If I wa...

I found the discrepancy. Brix supports only mSata while BrixS supports a 2.5in drive as well.

Need to build a mini PC

I've been out of the game for sometime now. Need some recommendation for a mini PC that'll be attached to a 30" TV set for watching movies and soap operas (not by me). Requirements: 1. has to perform well at 1080p so I'd prefer at least an i3 2. has to be able to house a single 2.5in SATA disk ...

I tried using 8 recently once again and just hated it. So 7 it is for me. I guess the classic shell is a decent fix. The question is, why use 8 that looks like 7 if you can just use proper 7?

Re: WD Green vs. Black

I've worked with tons of different laptop 2.5 disks and can tell you that only mechanical drives I would buy for my own laptop are WD or in worst case scenario - Seagate. Everything else is pure crap. Hitachi and Toshiba were quite awful. HGST is pretty new so haven't had much experience with them. ...

What happened to 5S? It's the newest.

That aside, I had a 4S before and got a 5. Have been using the 5 for about 1.5 years now. I like it. It's still pretty quick, has a larger screen, better camera and wifi. It's also faster. I see no reason whatsoever to buy the 4S anymore.

Re: XP's slow death is forcing my hand.

I would go with a Thinkpad T-series machine if you want portability or W-series if you must have the larger screen. Those are enterprise level systems and are noticeably better in quality than the consumer line systems. After years of Dells at previous jobs I would not trust them. With that the one ...

Re: A perfect automobile

You try driving this in a New England or Canadian winter with summer tires and see how "perfect" you'll feel sliding all over the road with that rear-engine, rwd biased pig of a car. Sorry, just not a fan of Porsche.

Also, I've driven an old 911 before. A fun car but far from perfect.

I can throw graphs at you too. Not sure what's the point of it, though. D00d, you drive an ugly German piece of junk (which makes a pitiful 450hp from a monster 6.3L engine - pathetic for 2010s) and you get to have an opinion? No, for real, how does this happen? And how can anyone ever even conside...

The vette, gtr, lfa,and wrx account for what about 1% of the asian and us vehicles on the road? I didn't say euro cars outhandle all us and asian cars, but as a whole euro cars still handle better, their suspensions are more complex, etc. Most us vehicles and probably half of the asian vehicle are ...

Most shops in the US can't even do an alignment on a german luxury car because of specialized tools required. But a properly aligned bmw/mercedes will out handle just about any of the japanese or us vehicles. So according to you a Corvette, Nissan GTR or Lexus LFA can't hold a candle in handling to...

Don't know what the issue is unfortunately but I think you confused GB with TB. I'm pretty sure you have 2TB and 3TB drives, not 2GB and 3GB respectively. Those wouldn't last very long for recording. :) A 256MB hard disk wouldn't hold Microsoft Office let alone W7. :)

Even then, don't those multi-gpu cards still have issues too? I've been curious: what are these issues that people keep referring to? I've been running a dual-GPU system starting 2006 all the way until 2010 with SLI and then from 2011 on with Crossfire. The only time I actually ran into a real prob...

I've had 16GB for a while in both desktop and laptop. It's nice to have. On the other hand, when I had 8GB for a few weeks while getting a replacement for a bad RAM kit, the difference in performance was negligible, even in games. I'd get 16GB anyway since prices are slowly going up but is it absolu...
