Re: Does this exist? VNC-like remote access through a sort-of KVM?

Yeah, IP-KVMs are pretty pricey, and I haven't seen a DIY IP-KVM that wasn't a serial server. (https://freetserv.github.io/) The Lantronix Spider (https://www.lantronix.com/product-families/spider/) might be what you're looking for. I've used Adder (https://www.adder.com/en) stuff in the past, and i...

Re: Massive increase in Single Thread Performance...

Now that the NIC isn't hanging off the USB controller this should be much more usable as a little server, and I may pick one up after a couple of revisions. :) I'm kind of surprised they jumped to an OoO core. 4 in-order proc is more then enough for what the RPis are supposed to be. Given the price ...

Re: SSD for laptops/office workstations

SK Hynix also has some nice drives. They're based on the LAMD controller SK Hynix acquired, and they're decently cheap. They do have the problem of being limited to 120-500GB capacities though, and they've gotten hard to find. WD Blue with 3D NAND work well. I have 4x 500GB in a softraid array, and ...

TBH I'm not sure what they "did to it"; all I know is that it has pissed me off more than once, and removing it does not seem to cause any ill effects, so I nuke it when I see it. "locate" is pretty benign, and normally the updatedb script is run once a day at midnight, which is...

Re: Documents Folder and Syncing

You might want to check out Syncthing (https://syncthing.net/), if you're NAS can handle it. It's a FOSS alternative to Dropbox, and it's much easier then manually syncing three devices. Just a nitpick but I'd say FOSS alternative to Dropbox is more nextcloud than syncthing. Does syncthing still no...

Re: Documents Folder and Syncing

Some of this sort of BS is even infecting popular Linux desktop distros like Ubuntu. There's an indexing package which has become "shoot on sight" when I do a new OS install. Which one is that? I haven't used desktop Ubuntu for any length of time, and I haven't experienced these problems ...

Re: Documents Folder and Syncing

I'm not happy with the various failings between most sync programs/cloud sync apps such as Dropbox (That's 'spensive, Lucy!), Google Drive (I don't use Google anything), and MS OneDrive (which, as far as I can tell, doesn't have a proper encryption stage for the parts that live in the cloud. So I p...

i5-8259U vs i7-8559U

Is the i7 and its 2MB of cache, 400MHz of base clock cycles, and 150MHz of max GPU cycles over the i5 worth it?

I'm looking at NUCs and trying to decide which proc to get. I have a Pentium Silver J5005 NUC which works fine except being limited to 8GB of RAM.

Re: CPU architecture router performance

With the high end of the market transitioning simultaneously, it is possible that a big player like Broadcom will leverage the same network processor core across its entire new portfolio to save development time. Brocade, or whoever they are now, used the mainframe model. Everything was fully capab...

Re: Ryzen and Linux: A cautionary tale

Centos is hard to install on actual hardware. I had trouble installing Centos 7 on Dell C2D laptop as well as Thinkpad T420s until I disabled nVidia GPU. I love Centos on the server but it doesn't play well on desktops. Good to know about Ryzen on Linux. RHEL/CentOS don't have the most up to date g...

For this I'd say search the existing code base for a similar example and do whatever was done there, for consistency. Both approaches have advantages and disadvantages, highly dependent on context. I wrote the C# project's codebase from scratch. What do I do then? Decide if you're going to ca...

Testing out the AMD drivers and my motherboard only having one displayport are the reasons I have a discrete card in my personal desktop. I have quite a few systems which only have the IGP, and they work great.

I'm not running the gcc toolchain from the official repos (needed newer toolchain for something I was working on a few months ago), so this will be fun to sort out. Anyone know of a legal place to get disk images of old DOS games? Re: .NET Core on Linux and/or MacOS

After some initial playing around... C# on .NET Core is more like Java then Go, Rust, or C/C++. I built a self-contained executable using the default "Hello World" boilerplate, and it requires 178 files to run on a clean Linux install. That pretty much kills it for everything that isn't lo...

Re: .NET Core on Linux and/or MacOS

While there's a lot of Perl code out there, my impression is that its popularity is declining, as Python fits into much the same niche and is a more "modern" language. Of the languages you just listed, I'd put Perl last in terms of priority. Indeed. C# --> C/C++ --> Python --> Perl is pro...

I'm wondering about IDE/text editor experiences Visual Studio: Windows/Mac, most comprehensive, but perhaps a bit bloated if you use only like 5% of the functionality. Does anyone have any impressions of .NET Core on Linux and/or MacOS? I'm wondering about IDE/text editor experiences, toolchain maturity, or experiences porting applications. Re: Application development or Help Desk, both?

You have to understand the point isn't to teach you tools (C, C++, Python, etc.), but to teach you the concepts. Really, the language isn't important. I would agree, except that many concepts aren't taught at all if you're using high-level languages. Sure, assembly isn't super useful, but the minds...

I'm a bit out of touch - do dev degrees include assembly, C, or anything low-level these days? It depends on the institution, and what their focus is. Also, the student. I just want to say, rolling your own VPN on something like DO or Linode is kinda like the argument for build+FreeNAS vs a Synology system. Sort of. IPs used by VPN providers get blocked due to abuse at times by various services, and it really is the best way to know how much, or how little, gets lo...
