Re: Handbrake: expensive old CPU versus new budget CPU

As someone said, just add a modern GPU so you can encode movies. I use a RX460 2GB paired with a Q6600 in handbrake or vegas video, and it encode very fast and with very good quality. It can hardware encode X264 and X265

Re: A trick for your tired eyes

OP: Unless and until you can provide proper citations for what you are describing, I strongly disagree with your conclusions. I can give three partial explanations which might fit: 1. CRT monitors have (or may have, I forget) a tendency to be brighter than many LCDs, which will generally reduce the...

Re: A trick for your tired eyes

I wonder how many phones are made today that still have an LCD panel instead of AMOLED or some other kind of OLED display. Seems like those are a lot more common now even outside of flagship devices. For the eyes is the same, none of this technologies flick, so your muscles will become adapted to f...

Re: A trick for your tired eyes

No no, this is a terrible mistake my friends. People have been using monitors, tvs etc... massively since the 80s, is not true that people use screens more now. Desktop monitors and TVs of the 80s were typically at arms' length or further away. Now people stare at laptop and smartphone screens, whi...

Re: A trick for your tired eyes

I do understand. Now that I'm 50 (ouch!) trust me, I understand. Thing is, I get the exact same thing when I read stuff on paper -- it takes several minutes to be able to focus on distant things after reading a paper document. Pretty sure that has nothing to do with the refresh rate.... This has no...

Re: A trick for your tired eyes

OP, I hate to say it, but the reason you're having trouble focusing now more than you did in the 90s is because your eyes are 25+ years older and the lenses are getting stiffer. sure, that’s why my 20-year-old cousin has the same problem and the eye doctor tell her to make "eye exercises"...

Re: A trick for your tired eyes

Increases in screen related eye strain since the advent of smartphones aren't due to LCDs, which many of us were using rather earlier than that. It's because everyone's staring at their darn phones all the time . No no, this is a terrible mistake my friends. People have been using monitors, tvs etc...

Re: A trick for your tired eyes

No offense, OP, but almost nothing you said actually makes any sense. CRTs will just make a bad situation worse because then you have to try and focus on blurry pixels and end up tiring your eyes even further. Of course, that’s the trick, you are making your eyes works instead of watching a no flic...

Re: A trick for your tired eyes

LCDs don't flicker just because you reduce the refresh rate. They just refresh the image less frequently. I call BS. You are not right sorry, reducing the brightness and the hz of your lcd could make your monitor flick, not too much like a ctr but a bit to have some good effects in your eyes. This ...

A trick for your tired eyes

Probably a lot of you have eye problems. I am nearly 8 hours or more in front of my computer or my phone and this create problems in our eyes. The more common problem usually is a lack of focus, a permanent damage in the motor muscles of our eyes that makes focus really slow in real life situations....

Re: Let's take a look at the VP9 decoding performance of 20 different processors!

For those like are still using old computers like me (c2q) the best is use Netflix app in win 10, not browser, and use edge instead of chrome, that activate h264 instead vp9, for YouTube videos. I have run a vc1 test in my computer with firefox and it takes only 20-30 of the cpu with no hardware acc...

Re: VGA upgrade possible for photo editing and 4k playback ?

is much better use a card that can get power from the PSU to prevent problems in an old mobo. Also I prefer AMD because this software helped me to solve this problem and to create different profiles with I really doubt I could accomplished in a Nvidia card without the help of 3rd party software. I ...

Re: VGA upgrade possible for photo editing and 4k playback ?

you only will need a piece of paper to cover 2 pins of the cpu. Is super easy. ...That.. Uh. ...that doesn't, like, sound easy? I assume you don't actually mean the pins in the LGA socket, right? You really mean the contacts/pads on the CPU? Even then... super-small. It seems very frustrating, not ...

Re: VGA upgrade possible for photo editing and 4k playback ?

the pin cover in the q6600 involves just increasing the fsb speed, is like a change of cpu for the mobo, you are not tuning anything above specs if you have a 333mhz RAM. Juice 75w via the pci is much more dangerous in an old system, and in my pc causes crashes until I figure out to decrease watts u...

Re: VGA upgrade possible for photo editing and 4k playback ?

This is terrible advice, in so many ways. I can't even begin to disect it, no just no. The day you demostrate that you can make half of the things I do in a 11 years old computer instead of upgrading every two years I think the OP should start to listen to you. By now I think is better to listen a ...

Re: VGA upgrade possible for photo editing and 4k playback ?

I got the same setup than you, here is my advice: I opted for a rx460 with no plug to the PSU, big mistake, ancient mobos have problems to deliver enough juice to the pci so I need to down clock it to half of the power because every time the card need juice the driver crash. Buy AMD because of it am...

Re: AV1 Video Codec

Even my crappy Snapdragon 435 phone decodes HEVC 8-bit without issue. The added encode compute complexity of the HEVC tier codecs will be mostly handed by server side of the streaming sites anyway. If for 99% of end users who are using a land-based Internet connection I doubt the codec choice matte...

Re: AV1 Video Codec

Just for the note my ancient q6600 using windows 10 and Firefox av1 test (search for it) can play the video at 1080p with 30-40 max cpu, but is unable to play H265 or vp9 without hardware aceleration. this could help the fast adoption of the codec with no need to wait for hardware circuits in the GP...

yes if you only need to rotate or trim use filter features in VLC, if you put a video in a video editing program you need to render every change you make in the timeline.

Current state for a home Web server

I am using a rackspace account that charge me $40 month for a 120 Mb/s shared VPS for an online store The store do not have much traffic and with the current fiber symetrical high speed conections here in spain I am thinking to use one of this at home/work to allocate my server. Re: Synology 1815+ or other?

I'd build my own at that price point.  I wouldn't trust my data to a RAID 5 with a standard FS either... Many folks here seem to have *lots* of hardware sitting around, making this a viable option for them.  But I'd have to buy everything. When I looked into this, it seemed like I'd save about $300...

Re: SSD Partition Showing Incorrent Amount of Free Space

Samsung magician takes 10 gb per 120 to a thing called overprovisioning, probably the 30 gb you need are the ones that samsung is taking to increase the lifespan of your ssd, as my 120 gb drive takes 11 gb by default, yours probably is taking 30 gb.
