Yea, I've logged in using those credentials to access regular shares and still being unable to shutdown the computer remotely. Maybe it's a combination of factors?

Yea, I notice it's real iffy, especially if the usernames and passwords are identical. I guess its just laziness on M$'s part haha

Yup :)

And when I did it prompted me for a User/Pass. When I entered that I could access the share AND shutdown the computer remotely.

What does this mean though, that all along I wasn't logging in as admin?

Using the GUI. Although you weren't the first person to suggest this.

If you say it's a permission issue, then how come I can still access the shares on the remote computer that I'm trying to shutdown?

How about workgroups? If the computers are on different workgroups, or say one belonged to a domain and the other to a workgroup?

Simple File sharing disabled and still no dice.

Do I have to be on the same domain for the shutdown to take place?

Yup.

Computer A (doing the shutdown) can remotely shutdown computer B but not computer C for some reason. I'll try disabling simple file sharing.

On a side note, doesn't that registry option look like the one in gpedit where it forces network users to authenticate as guest?

I believe it's a combination of 2 factors, or maybe 1.5

1. I need the username/password of the remote computer that I'm trying to shutdown. That I have.

2. I need to enable a service on that computer. Any one know what that might be?

Is there an error message of some sort when you try to shutdown the remote computer? In the Security or System Event Logs? Have you tried the /f (or -f) switch to force all open applications to terminate? Can you terminate using the GUI interface (the /i or -i switch)? Yep, it gives an "Access...

Guys, thanks for the suggestions so far, I tried mapping a network drive but no luck. Both my friends and I believe it is a service that's not running. Anyone know what this is?

Wouldn't that mean storing a password of sorts on the computer? If so is there any way to remove the password memory feature of a mapped drive?

The computer is not logged, and the remote computer has a user (adminstrators group) logged in.

I can access the computer via Remote Desktop no problems, just wondering how come I can perform a remote shutdown.

Enabling Remote Shutdown

Hi, I was just playing around with the shutdown command in windows XP, and I realized that for some reason I am unable to shutdown one of my boxes on the network. I come up with the message "Access Denied", although I have the admin password for both the boxes (both are logged on as admin)...

Hibernation Error

Hi, I am running Windows SP2 on a Sony Vaio Laptop. It currently does not have hibernation enabled, and there's no hiberfil.sys in the c:\ drive. When I try to enable hibernation in the control panel, it gives the error: "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process...

Hmm, fair enough. Since the CISC processors and GPUs are totally optimized for different operations, it's quite probably difficult to achieve that. It's not really for Gaming within a VM enviroment, rather for testing programs that require 3D acceleration (3D graphics programs, for an example) Thank...

Change VMWare 5 Display Device

Hi, I've got VMWare 5 Workstation, running Windows XP SP2, with VMWare Tools installed. The Display device is VMWare SVGA II, with 16mb of RAM. The driver is vmx_fb.dll, version 11.02.0000.00. I was wondering if there is anyway to "upgrade" the display device, ie, increase the amount of video memory...

Yes, in the [Paths] options, I've added the folder containing the libraries that I downloaded in the PDK and still no dice. If DevC++ is similar to VC++, then you are missing one step. Specifying the path allows the linker to find whatever lib that you specify in the linker options, but you still n...

There are a bunch of examples for resizing dialogs (and controls) on codeproject.com, you can go take a look. If you do it yourself for the first time this can be quite daunting, I would just say for the first version of your program just drop this feature. Also, if you enlarge the thing according ...

C++: Resizing a dialog box while program is running

Hi, I'm writing an application using a Dialog Box in C++ using Bloodshed DevC++. In the resource file I can specify the dimensions of the dialog box when it's first initialized. However, is there any way to resize the dialog box from within the program while it's running. Is there a function that I ...
