Re: RyZen+ Preorder: DO IT NOW!

In all seriousness, until memory prices drop 50-70%, I'm not purchasing anything.
I can be a very patient person. I sat out last year, I can sit out another year (or two, if necessary).
The industry is still out of whack.

Re: Installing XP these days.

Well, I can already see that your hardware kicks the snot out of hardware I tested on.
I wonder if it only gives acceptable performance if you through very high hardware at it, do to software overhead/virtualization of the hardware.

I guess the point is that it is possible.

If there's success, please post the VM and version, as well as your hardware config, so I can see what it took.

Thanks.

Re: Installing XP these days.

It's more of an issue with the software in question. I'm only aware of games from the pre-Pentium days having issues with too fast of a processor. With multi-core, you may have to set the affinity to core-0, other than that, shouldn't be any issues. My retrox XP box is running games/software from ab...

Re: Installing XP these days.

I'd actually suggest not running in a VM. I personally have done side by side comparisons with an XP VM, running on Linux Mint (VMware Workstation Player vr 12.x) versus bare metal XP. A lot of my older games, particularly, those that required OpenGL (Jedi Knight II/III come to mind), worked fine on...

Re: AMD Ryzen 5 or AMD FX?

If your brother was already using a socket AM3+ motherboard, I'd say it would be a no-brainer - Get the FX, as it would allow you to use the rest of the setup. However, since he's on an unrelated socket, it would require repurchasing most base components anyway. As others have already stated, going ...

I've got an FX-6300 running stock.
I didn't purchase it to overclock, but because of price (about $100), price of platform, and number of threads (I'm running VM's under Mint).

Re: What vid card would you choose to crown a 3GHz C2D, WinXP, legacy gaming box?

Both the GTX 750 and 750 Ti have Windows XP drivers, so should be supported, without any major issues. Also, the 750 is available for less than $100, and with the occasional sale, the 750 Ti can be had for about $100. A word on WINE :  I can only speak on my own experiences here, but I've tried to i...

Re: Win10 only for Cabbie and Zen

The only issue I see for this, is if AMD refuses to release Windows 7/8/8.1 chipset drivers for the motherboards. There should be no reason why Summit Ridge (no GPU) shouldn't work with these OSes. However, it becomes more of an issue with Raven Ridge (with integrated GPU), as AMD probably won't rel...

Re: AMD Zen Said to be VERY COMPETITIVE

However Zen performs, it is guaranteed to do one thing: Lower the prices of their pre-existing CPUs on the market. That's all I care about. The reason, is simple. If Zen is in the ballpark of Intel, then they will price like Intel. It's quite vicious really. No thanks, I prefer my CPUs affordable.

What about the condition of the discs themselves?
Any scratches? Any smudges?
Have you tried using a laser cleaning kit for the drive (used to be able to get them cheap at Walmart)?
Walmart used to sell CD disc cleaners, as well.

What Zen will do for me, is to drive down the cost of the FX-8350 chips. When they hit the magic $125 mark, I'll do a final upgrade to my Phenom II 965 workstation. I make it a habit to not spend hundreds of dollars on CPUs. Buy the FX-8350 now as part of a Microcenter bundle (the CPU is $150, but ...

Just played about an hour of assorted DirectX 9 titles (windowed) with GPU-Z open, so I could monitor temps/GPU load/fan speeds. I've got a Radeon HD 7870 (XFX Double D). The temps never exceeded 62°C, with fans running between 30-48% (1100-1900 RPM). Now, I will say, that the reason I even consider...

Alright, I'll be honest, when I first saw the title, I immediately thought "flame bait", but after reading your post, I'll give it a shot. Alright, you want 8 threads. Intel's i7's typically start @ about $300 and an additional $100 for the motherboard. ($400) AMD's FX-8320 typically goes ...

It seems as it is based on how the drives are packed. Most of the low reviews come from OEM drives. Retail boxed drives have significantly better reviews. Newegg packaging is horrible. If you want drives to make it to your front door, you need to buy retail (when purchasing from Newegg). If you buy ...

If you're sure the fan is functioning as intended, the first thing I'd do is remove the whole heatsink. I'd clean the TIM material from both the base of the heatsink and the CPU. Apply new TIM (Arctic Silver 5 or whatever your preference is). Then re-seat the heatsink/fan. If temperatures still don'...
