Re: SSI - Solid State Impatience

Intel's SSD Toolbox recommends keeping Superfetch off, even on a SSD/HDD setup. I keep it off. I'd only keep it on if the boot drive was the HDD.

What would be the logic of keeping Superfetch off even for a full SSD setup? Wouldn't a RAM cache still be faster than an SSD?

Re: SSI - Solid State Impatience

What are people's opinions of leaving Superfetch on/off and using alternative RAM cachings (Samsung RAPID etc...)? I would assume you should only run either Superfetch or RAPID, but not both at the same time.

Re: SSD vs. HDD in a netbook

Last week I just upgraded my Acer AO-521 with an AMD K125 processor to an SSD from the stock 5400rpm HDD. I went ahead and purchased a Samsung 850 EVO with the vision that one day it would be passed on to my desktop. This upgrade was done as my HDD had reached end of life. To be honest for the use t...

Re: ubuntu 14.04 + Acer C720 Chromebook

To continue this discussion from my thread in the laptop section: Is it possible to put a a 64GB SD card in the card reader and have all my Plex video files there? Would be cheaper for me than sourcing an M2 drive as they are currently all >$120 here locally. I wonder if transfer rate would be an is...

Re: Netbook replacement = Chromebook?

It's not HTML5 that's slowed down YouTube, but rather that the video bitrates have been increasing and codecs have been changing. Many videos are now encoded with AVC or VP9, the latter of which is not hardware accelerated by most (if not all) cards, except maybe the GTX 960 and supposedly certain ...

Netbook replacement = Chromebook?

I'm still using my Acer AO521 which was an oddball netbook with an AMD K125 instead of the ubiquitous Atom and it's served me well. I mainly use it for general browsing, Youtube, and also as the Plex server for my home. Plex transcoding performance is woefully inadequate and I've found Youtube perfo...

Anyone have an idea what the chances of being able to upgrade from a 32-bit Windows 7 version to a 64-bit Windows 10 version would be? Would love to make full use of my 4GB.

Re: W10 task manager clocks

Sounds like maybe it is showing a running average, as the CPU shifts between different clock speeds in response to load? Possibly, but the behaviour I've seen looks more like a linear scaling of the max to min CPU frequency range with utilization. What is the point of showing a non-real CPU frequen...

Re: W10 task manager clocks

I've noticed that the W10 task manager scales clock speed with real time utilization percentage so it gives the impression of fully variable clock speeds instead of discrete steps.

Re: Microsoft Windows 10 Gratis Upgrade Plans

All I'm hoping for is that they allow Windows 7 Starter to upgrade to a normal, non restricted version of Windows 10. I've upgraded using Windows Update to the Windows 10 Preview just to rid myself of the silly 2GB RAM limit.

Re: Problem with new EVGA GTS250

I tried resetting the BIOS again after upgrading it to the latest version. Checked the SLI paddle (it hadn't moved) and made sure everything was seated correctly and still got nothing from the GTS250. It's interesting to note that with the new BIOS I still got the long-short-short-short beep, but XP...

Re: Problem with new EVGA GTS250

Well...I did a BIOS update, no luck with the card still. Some Googling turned up several other cases of people have the same issue with their P5N-E SLI motherboard and newer graphics cards not working. I'm starting to think a new MB is the only option. Either that or eating the re-stocking charge.

Re: Problem with new EVGA GTS250

Hi Jigar,

I took it back to the store I purchased it from and they got it working first time in another system so clearly there's something wrong with mine. I'm at a bit of a loss to explain what that could be though.

Problem with new EVGA GTS250

So I purchased a new GTS250 to replace my struggling 7900GS yesterday. It uses a single 6-pin auxiliary connector just like the 7900GS did. Pulled the 7900GS from the PCI-Express slot and put in the GTS250, plugged it in and tried to boot. I get no post message and a long-short-short-short beep sequ...

Wow...that's an impressive build for the money...I was looking at Dell Zino HD's for the same price, but this seems like a huge step up in performance for the same price. The cost of the OS is the main sticking point.

HTPC on a budget - Dell Zino HD Best Choice?

We're moving to a new home in a month and are going to try to leave Cable TV behind. Looking for 2 HTPCs: one for the master bedroom and one for the family room. Is the Dell Zino HD the most economical option? We are looking in that $300-$400 CAD price range and besides the Atom based options, this ...

Re: Front fan placement question

I would vote for putting the fan in the lower position which has less airflow impedance and a clear shot at your graphics card. Hard drives can usually live with some incidental airflow around them and don't really need direct airflow. As you've said, the 4850's run notoriously hot and any cool air ...

Thanks for the suggestion FF. The Happauge 150 was one of the units that seemed like a reasonable solution. TV Tuner, Easy on the Budget

My primary desktop is being repurposed from my gaming/web computer to a family TV/casual web surfing computer. Having two babies does that to your life, but that's altogether another topic. I'll be moving everything, including my LCD monitor downstairs to the dining room. It's a small room so the 20...

If you're gaming, I vote no. Just overclock your e8400 a bit if you get the itch for some more speed.

If you're encoding, compiling, video/photo editing anything else that uses more cores effectively then go ahead.

Re: Upcoming PC - your thoughts please

No real warts I can see.

I'd be tempted to recommend a Corsair HX520W to save a bit of cash and get the modular cables.
Also, is there a good reason you're going with Vista Ultimate rather than Home Premium? Save a bit of cash there too.
