Re: Worth it to upgrade from i-950 to i7-4770k?

If you have to ask, it isn't worth it.

Re: Gun prOn!

The G19 is a compact pistol, I was leaning toward the G17 because it is full size. From what I understand, compact pistols have higher recoil and are intended more for concealed carrying (something I don't intend to do anytime soon). The G23 is also a compact pistol and it is chambered for .40 inst...

Re: 2 or 3 TB HDD recommendations

I haven't yet encountered a drive that politely failed in a manner where that was possible, the failures that have been gradual enough to have any symptoms at all still weren't in any condition to run hours of nonstop writes. I'd settle for a 99% overwrite if the failure allowed. I don't have classi...

Re: 2 or 3 TB HDD recommendations

Never be afraid to RMA a product and get the replacement you are entitled to! Without that then the manufacturers don't actually know about all the failures and continue to publish overly high MTBF numbers. I'm not going to RMA a drive that I wasn't able to zero out and if it was working well enoug...

Re: Upgrade card now or wait for 700 series?

The 660Ti is a great 1080 gaming card, a next generation that's even faster won't make it any less great, and if that level of performance is $60 cheaper this summer so what? Gaming - free time for, youthful reflexes to succeed at, interest in - is a fairly limited window. Don't waste it with the de...

Re: Gun prOn!

So... would you all murder me if I bought a hi-point? I'm on a really tight budget, and I at least try to act my wage. My current home defense gun is a loaner (and really not very ideal for home defense, it's a Marlin Model 60), so I need to get my own gun very soon. Hi-point is cheap and nothing s...

Re: Need a replacement CPU fan/heatsink

Ebay shows S775 stock coolers for $5 shipped http://tinyurl.com/c2ahbdl

A replacement fan is $4. http://tinyurl.com/7p7q4mr

A stock speed Wolfdale runs in the 30 watt range . There's no reason to spend $20-30 on a big aftermarket cooler.

Re: Possible time for a cheap upgrade..or wait for overhaul?

No reason you can't move a new video card to a new build later. If your OC settings won't stick with nvidia inspector then use MSI Afterburner. The Nv 550 is worse than what you have now, the 6850 isn't enough better to be worth the trouble. For a cheap upgrade, get a used 560ti or 570 in the forums.

Re: Integrated vs Dedicated audio

I upgraded from onboard ALC1200 to a DG. I'm running good studio headphones via a dedicated amp and the difference is very subtle, at best. The only concrete point to the DG is that I have to turn my amp up to 5/10 to bring out the background hiss which was apparent on the Realtek source around 2.5/...

Re: Dual digital displays via IGP

I ran into the same issue setting up a HTPC 3 years ago.

$100+ Geforce 8000, 9000, AMD 780, no dice.

Yet all of the Intel G3x/G4x boards high enough on the totem pole to have two digital ports at all did support simultaneous out. Go figure.

Re: Gun prOn!

The Buckmark is very easy to take down. The downside is you need to unscrew the rear sight assembly to remove the bolt and that will lose your zero. But you should only need to do that every 10,000+ rounds to change the buffer. The only regular cleaning it needs is oiling and picking the crud out of...

Re: GPU Advice, GTX590

1) Multi GPU jitter is a problem that wasn't a problem until somebody invented a tool to measure it. Forget it. 2) 200 watts or 200 bucks only matters if the hobby to you is price/performance or power/performance. (Or unemployed/student, of course) You already said your hobby is maxing detail. So do...

Re: I have seen the WQXGA light!

Of the probably 10,000 of dollars I've wasted on PC toys over the past 15 years, pretty much every night-and-day "wow" moment was after buying something on the output side. I can't tell you anything about the user experience of a dozen generations of exponentially faster CPUs and GPUs. But...

Re: Pets that died

here's the cold hard truth; the first somewhat intelligent pet that dies, especially if it's because you have to put him down, is the hardest. I think it was Heinlein that wrote that a man should shoot his own dog. I agree with the logic. That was still one of the harder things that I've had to do.

Re: Car question - extra hp??

Ah, when you said Impreza standard 2.5L I thought you meant the transmission was a standard. Never driven a 'RU auto, not sure how much that box will kill the pep. Calling a third pedal standard is like calling a mechanical ball mouse standard. Nothing standard about it anymore in this country. Tho...

Re: My first HTPC build help please

I think one reason that board was suggested is because it can be upgraded to DDR3 and a faster CPU. Are you saying you'd prefer something like the $165 combination eric previously suggested . Or do you have something entirely different in mind? Yes, I would go lower end. An AM2+ board will take the...

Re: My first HTPC build help please

Unless HTPC duty is going to also going to include a lot of ripping, $240 on a board/CPU with a 95W TDP isn't going to give you much of an additional performance return.
