Re: Sigma 50/1.4 "Art" Lens review

This has gotten plain silly. F/1.4 is the standard fast aperture. Aside from canon's f1.2's (which reaaly need to be stopped down a bit), faster than f/1.4 tend to be voightlandar or leica lenses (the new panny looks amazing btw). Amazing glass can be found in mf, but there are some very good reaso...

Re: Point and shoots – Thoughts?

What are you looking for? Compact or superzoom and/or bright lens? An xz-1 is oldish, but cheap if you find a deal. I got one for $200. Fast lens and decent sensor size can give a bit of that depth of field look. The fz1000 is a new superzoom camera - fast F2.8-F4 lens, up to 400mm equivalent, and l...

So, thanks for keeping your cool! That link was informative. Basically, Netflix's issues are not related to net neutrality because they're rolling out their own content delivery network. "Up until 2012, Netflix primarily relied on third-party content delivery networks, or CDNs, such as Limeligh...

I think you should consider some available capabilities as well. While apple has "a billion mature apps" are they the apps you need? Video playback was a BIG one for me. Android has several great players - bs player, mobo player, mx player, and they handle almost anything - mp4?? add mpeg2...

Re: Canon 5d (not mark 2) questions

So I went for it. i.e. 5d classic, vs getting the mft 25mm f1.4 and 45mm f1.8 (though they would have been the "sharper" options). I just have to adapt my 85mm f1.4 samyang, and i'll have 35mm f2, 50mm f1.4 and 85mm f1.4. Also have an 8mm fisheye that gives me a wider image now (albeit wit...

Stick with the 16MP sony if you must. It looks like sony's 24mp sensor sacrifices too much. If you want DSLR format, that's the SLT-A55.

Re: Canon 5d (not mark 2) questions

Actually high iso isn't really big on the list, though it looks like there is a bit of a gain there over my ep3. This isn't a move. More of an addition. Looking more at utilizing the manual glass I have already (like you I'm a m43 user), getting shallower dof, more dr. My flashes are lumo pro 160 + ...

Canon 5d (not mark 2) questions

Considering complementing my m43 camera with a standard 5d. ISO 1600/3200 from the 5d appears fine enough - mostly considering this for manual glass (OM/nikon/m42), landscapes, "studio" work. I'm considering fitting one with a focusing screen - how does the 5d handle metering in aperture m...

Reading various threads on mu-43.com, from people who have had both the 20 and the 17, the consensus is that, yes the panasonic 20mm is better without a doubt... on a panasonic body. On the Oly body the AF on the 20 leaves something to be desired and the AF is very loud. I love the 20mm on my epl1....

Re: MFT GF1 or E-PL1

Vold, what's you opinion on the VF-2? Without the vf-2 option, The build quality and value of the gf1/20mm kit probably weights more than the epl1's subjectively better OOC Jpegs, and built in IS. The epl1 for $400 plus vf2 (easily one of the best EVFs on the market) would cost ~$650. While it's pos...

Now is a very good time. The EPL1 can be bought new for $400, and the EPL1s was announced today (Japan only for now, and nothing really noteworthy - iso bump on same sensor, lighter maybe faster focus lens, color options). The GF1 is also a good deal now, selling for $600. GF1 build is a bit better....

Re: Ultrawide zooms (but not fisheye)

The Sigma 8-16/4.5-5.6 does very well in tests http://www.photozone.de/canon-eos/515-sigma816f4556apsc It's not constant aperture, either, but unless you're shooting telephoto zoom or movies, that's not a big deal in a UWAZ. Ultra wide angles don't need a fast shutter speed to avoid camera shake, a...

If he's serious about starting, he may want to spend a little more. Granted - a good picture is a good picture, and you can learn composition even on a cheap p+s, but he'll probably enjoy the quality of his pictures more with a little more investment. Agreed. The macro is simple, and can be cheap. You don't need a fast lens - and you don't even need af. A decent manual will do. Olympus OM lenses are adaptable not only on oly/panasonic bodies but also canon. You can get good results without too much expenditure. Even on my p&s - an fz28, I was...

Gpu power and memory speed are directly related to performance. memory works like this - you need enough to hold your screen and textures (mostly), and if you run out, performance dies, since now you're passing data over the pci-e bus, from your regular memory.
