Say those of you in IT and are in West Michigan...

Anyone got any suggestions for who to talk to for quotes on getting the plant's Ethernet network redone? I'll need structured cabling, cable trays, and MDF/IDF's moved and installed. Decent sized job, plant is 275'x350' plus offices. I count we need 5 mdf/idf's and well over 200 ethernet drops insta...

Had fun with a relatively recent whirlpool dishwasher. It stopped recirculating water so it would fill and empty but not actually wash dishes. It seemed to following the cycle because it was also opening the soap door and "drying the dishes". I did some reading and they said it was the hea...

Re: W10 unable to access SOME of W7&W10 n-work shares

UPD: Just in case anyone cares - problem solved, weirdly, but solved. Assigning static addresses to each machine and disabling DHCP allow access to the shares. Putting every machine on DHCP allow access to the shares. In mixed mode machines see each other, but can not talk. Another thing - WiFi set...

Re: W10 unable to access SOME of W7&W10 n-work shares

If it was me I would recreate the shares that don't work on some machines. I would delete the shares and then during recreation check the share permissions and the local permissions as well for your groups and or accounts. If the share is by group then make sure individuals are in the proper groups....

Re: For everyday use laptop, better to get low budget one or entry level gaming?

I use a lenovo t420 with (2nd gen i5) 8gb ram and a 256gb ssd. Works fine for netflix, hulu, dvd's etc. Has a nice 100dpi screen at 1600x900. You could get the slim version of the same. It is also built like a tank with a magnesium chassis, I doubt it will ever really die. Lots of spare parts availa...

The new job uses a ton of zebra thermal label printers.

So far I've repaired 4 of them in various ways.

As a side note if you need to clean off the gum left behind by label printer jam, carb cleaner and a rag works wonders!

I would totally live out in the boonies if I could still have a 10-20 minute commute. The rosewill enclosures from newegg are decent, cheap, and reliable.
(I have 4 of them)
usb2 to ide 2.5"
usb2 to sata 2.5"
Usb3 to sata 2.5"
usb3 to sata 3.5"

The oldest one I've had for 5-6 years.

Re: Just installed an SSD. Anything I should be wary of?

Btw: ntfs does have a maximum limit to the number of fragments a file can have. Windows 10 still defrags files if they get over a certain number of fragments. Windows 7 does not so I DO recommend defragging ssd's on win7 machines once a year just in case. https://superuser.com/questions/1315108/ntfs...

Re: Where to buy centering/nub motherboard standoffs

all right do this:

find a long fine thread screw that fits in the stand off and screw it all the way in after applying loctite.
Let the loctite or gorilla glue set.
Cut the head off the screw.

use a deep well socket to screw the standoff into the mainboard.

There you go...

I haven't seen them in a while and the ones I do have are too tall for my case.

The two cases ago (athlon) case I had these kinds of stand offs, my cases since then are the wrong height for the standoffs.

Re: Air conditioning: Dual-zone mini split vs two portable units

The mini split will be miles more efficient as the hot side and cold side don't have to share the same box. It's also much more aesthetically pleasing (14,000 BTU window units will likely need an exterior brace), quieter, and just might be helpful at sale time. I've got a Mitsubishi dual-head unit ...
