Re: Anyone repair anything today?

I'm make 2 laminated labels. One to put on the main 150A breaker coming into the house and a 2nd to put on the main panel. I'll put these in place and turn off the respective breakers before plugging the generator in. These will stay with the generator when not in use and will be my manual "lo...

Well... I got it to 4.6 2core and 4.5 all core on the 2600k. Dvid is set to .080. it is not entirely stable seems fine in a lot of games but does not pass occt or prime. I'm gonna leave it alone. If I can get another year out of it I'll be happy and so will the wife since I'm not begging for an upgr...

Re: Oldie but goody - Sandy Bridge OC

I just got it up to 4.4ghz all core and 4.6 2 core overclock. in the bios it would give me 4.6 ghz but in windows it would stick at 4.2. Turns out there is a file in c:\windows\system32 you have to rename to take the limits off of overclocking: https://www.reddit.com/r/overclocking/comments/9g8lqi/w...

Oldie but goody - Sandy Bridge OC

I finally sorted out why my machine wouldn't over clock worth beans after my PS failed about a year a go. At the same time it failed and i put in a new powersupply I also updated the bios on my Gigabyte z68 mainboard. The new firmware looks nice but it also hid the LLC option. Out of sight and out o...

Re: Did you know Win95 could run on 386?

Fastest super socket 7 machine I had was a amd k6-III 450mhz. I don't remember if it was over clocked to that speed or if it came that way. It had a massive cooler on it and the case had lots of fans. I had 512kb cache on board as a level 3 cache plus the onboard l2 cache on the chip. I remember it ...

Re: Did you know Win95 could run on 386?

I did have it installed on a 386dx 25mhz with a math co and 4mb ram. slow as all get out but yes it did work. a 486 dx 33 with the same amount of ram was a marked improvement! I think the fastest machine I ever had win95 on was a amd 486 dx3 100mhz with 16mb ram. I remember it was a VLB machine but ...

FYI, Windows 10 is buggy with HDMI/Displayport montiors in regards to audio devices with sleep/suspend. It has an annoying tendency to revert to monitors as the default audio device after waking up from sleep regardless if your system default is something else. You have to force it back to get it w...

Re: Do new phones have significantly better radios?

When complaining about cell signal it is best to find out of other people have the same issue. Assuming you are going to replace the iphone 5 with a 7 or 8 find someone with one of those phones and see how they do in your office. If it is a large company then often Verizon and/or At&T can offer ...

I have seen cards like this BUT only on server board or on boards specifically designed to use one. In your case you are SOL. I bet you will find that: 1. the mainboard is not wired to allow it 2. the chipset will not allow it 3. mainboard bios will not see the extra memory one or all of the above. ...

With a good quality PSU you are most likely to have it bluescreen and reboot under load than for anything to go bang.

If you are having stability issues that you can't find the cause of, and your PSU is elderly, replacement is recommended.

I would find the exact timings (ideally also the kind of die) and order the closest possible match. I don't think you have dual rank, I believe most 8GB sticks are single-rank. You might need to manually tune the timings to the lowest common denominator, but if both are of reasonable quality, it sh...

Re: Frametime 8gb vs 16gb ram benchmarks?

Personally I would upgrade to 16gb ram this will give you room for the future.

I also upgraded from a 7870 to rx580 8gb and the gaming performance difference was definitely noticable.

You can skimp a little bit on cpu but not on ram and GPU when playing games.
