Re: Winter weather

My glove froze to the gas bottle on my torch when attempting to thaw the ice off my splitting maul (which conveniently has a hollow steel pipe handle). But I can't complain too much because 3 weeks ago (when it was -22F) I went to use it, the torch started emitting flames as a big lazy ooze instead...

Re: Winter weather

It went from +50f to +12 in 6 hours in my area in Michigan. I spent the early evening sweating profusely cleaning up some some-to-be-firewood in 99% humidity, then when I went back out around 11pm to load the boiler before I went to bed, I nearly froze to death in the wind. Of course I got my truck...

During Snowmageddon (about 40cm) on Wednesday I was having problems with my snowblower. It's an ancient Sears Craftsman 8hp 25" model that I've for 12 years but I'm the 3rd owner. It would drive with the gears properly, but attempting to pull it back manually would cause the transmission to ja...

I second this.
PITA but its the only way to get a clean install when windows scans the drives for old installs of windows.

Re: Anyone repair anything today?

I live out in the boonies here in west michigan. As some of you know we have been enjoying some real winter weather here lately. So just for fun right now we got 8" of fresh snow on top of 2-3" of wet snow that has now turned to ice. In this bounty of winter weather my well decided to brea...

Hopefully I can leave them (and only them) on 2012 R2 forever. They're going to be like the server versions of Windows XP and 7 holdouts. Can you run a particular version of windows server forever? I dunno for sure but the only reason i'm getting moved from windows 2003 to 2016 is because 2003 wsus...

Well this is fun! (s) Just went from 40f's and rain, to freezing rain (1/8" to 1/2" ice depending on where you are), to 20 to 40mph winds with falling temps, and blowing snow all in 24-36 hours. I have 2" of what was wet snow that is now ice with another 1/4 inch of fresh ice on top o...

I want to thank StarFalcon for buying most of my really old crap... I also want to thank goodwill for taking my old CRT's (all 18 of em). And finally thanks to Fair Salvage in Reed city for taking my old broken computers, laptops, and empty computer cases. Does that mean I've fully decluttered? ROFL...

I was a bit worried about my golden retriever (who lives outside). He has a pretty well built house, insulated with foam-filled 1.5" thick walls (including floor and ceiling), and a small 40w electric mat with a dog bed on top, but I was still concerned this cold combined with the snow would b...

Mine did it just the other day, when I swapped video cards and was waiting for the latest drivers to download. My dual screens just... went dark. Re: Performance benefits of upgrading RAM worth the price?

With laptops, sometimes they'll hide another SO-DIMM slot in a less user-accessible location. If you're sure that it's an 8GB module and the system only has 8GB, it sounds like you weren't so lucky. Often you will find one slot under the door on the bottom of the machine and a second slot under the...

How about this: If the "memory" is in a ram slot (dimm or so dimm) then it is RAM. If the "memory" is in a storage device slot (sata, ida, m.2, scsi, PCIe) then it is STORAGE. It is not about speed, it is about how close the processor is it? or in more simple terms is it attached...

Well west michigan was fun yesterday!

I got drifts up to thigh height.

I stayed home yesterday and just made it into work today. I had to snow blow the cars out before my Bro-in-law could come over and plow with the tractor.
Kids have a nice tall snow hill now.

I suppose the biggest question is: Is 4gb ram + 16gb of optane cache + 1tb hdd cheaper than 8gb of ram + 256gb ssd? Considering that 8k video resolution in a video game needs about 16 to 32gb video memory I can't think of a scene that would require 300gb+ of video memory to produce. Now if you wanted to know about a data array of multi terabytes that is crunched by video cards I'd look at how the computers that p...

We had the weirdest precipitation mix here outside of Boston. First a paper-thin layer of ice, followed by four inches of snow. Kids use core2quads in their desktop machines and watch streaming video on occasion. (netflix usually)
They prefer to use their laptops which are 2 or 3rd gen mobile core i5's the video seems to play back a bit more smoothly.
