Re: Can I install Apple Carplay and Android Auto at the same time on a vehicle?

As JBI finally upgrades to a 21st Century ride. 8) Hey, the previous one was 21st century (barely). This is the first one from the current decade though! I will say this, though - first vehicle I've owned that didn't have a cassette player in it! (Why were they still producing those in...

Not judging even if he had. It's getting pretty tricky to build an affordable system these days if you intend to be at least nominally legal on the software side.

Re: New lens, or new camera?

Glad to hear it! Is the flare across the whole image or just the outsides? Nothing terrible for a lens design that's old enough to drink this year, and which has a full-frame front glass exposure. When a point source is within range of the lens, there are a couple green artifacts chasing each other...

Re: New lens, or new camera?

Update: The Viltrox converter arrived on schedule, but I didn't have anything to test it with, so it just sat around for a week. But ended up grabbing a used EF 28-135 IS USM off eBay. I last used one of these maybe 7-8 years ago. A bit bulky for an f/3.5 lens due to its full-frame imaging capabilit...

Gotta figure some of the old ranking was the old guard hanging on for a miracle. When they got punked instead, they started dropping the site from their daily browsing and feeds. Can't SEO without content to back it up.

Re: soundcard showing as unplugged

I'm dreading my next smartphone upgrade since the non-removable battery will mean the only way for me to force a true hard reset will be to let the battery run all the way down. Popping the battery out of my current phone takes about 10 seconds. I've been reasonably impressed with the Google Pixel ...

Re: soundcard showing as unplugged

I have mixed feelings about this thread. On one hand, it's pretty cool that modern PCs have become so stable, we don't immediately reach for the power cord as a troubleshooting measure. On the other hand, things do lock up sometimes, so if you're asking for help and have NOT yet tried the power cord...

Re: New lens, or new camera?

You're going through my old camera bag! Except I was using the 7D body. IIRC at my peak I had the 70-200 f/2.8L, the 85 f/1.8, the 50 f/1.4, the 20mm f/2.8, the 12mm f/2.8 fisheye, and the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS as a walkaround. Unfortunately, marriage followed immediately by expensive car problems tor...

Re: 8gb ddr3 ram with 16 chips not working ??

Hard to know exactly what's going on unless you can list the model of laptop, and provide a link to the RAM you bought. But for the symptoms you describe, there are really only three possibilities: -- The laptop requires modules to be installed in pairs (possible, but rare); -- The cheap SO-DIMM you...

Re: New lens, or new camera?

I do remember the 70-200 f/2.8 quite fondly. That was the one lens I most regretted having to sell back when I downsized from Canon to m43 a few years back. And if you're using it on a crop body, the gen1 lens' distortions at the corners all but disappear.

Re: New lens, or new camera?

Second update: The Meike lens does pretty well, but it's awfully tricky to do a manual-only focus on such a small display. The wide aperture performance is otherwise pretty great. I finally caved and ordered the Viltrox adapter today, though. There are actually two choices: the EF-M1, which is just ...

Pretty much the same config here. For a typical number of residential users, the ERX and any Unifi AP can get you to commercial-grade performance for under $200 every time. The ERX has a web utility same as any other router. For the AP, you'll need to install a PC program or load the Unifi app onto ...

Often once Windows 10 is installed on any system with an EFI BIOS, all other possible boot devices get buried beneath the Windows startup routine, UNLESS you enter the BIOS config and elevate the priority of another device. On some laptops the BIOS access key (F1, F12, or whatever) brings up a menu ...

Had been thinking I needed new glasses. Turned out the nose pieces were just a little bent, causing the current pair to ride a few mm too low on my face, taking my eyeballs out of the "sweet spot". Amazing how much of a difference that can make. Nosepads used to drive me nuts. I don't wan...

Re: New lens, or new camera?

As a stopgap, I picked up the Meike 25mm f/1.8 all-manual lens so I can get a feel for how my current camera body and sensor will perform with wide aperature. The all-manual approach is not great for composition but it's a prime, so there are only two parameters to set. This is pretty close to a 50m...

Hmm...the fast focusing is definitely a consideration. Good to know.

The big downside of those lens converters is that you lose all automatic control, which is pretty rough for rapid composing.

I've had that sensation with noise cancelling sometimes, too. For airline flights I've found that noise-blocking in-ear headphones work just about as well as noise-cancelling. The one advantage of noise cancelling is that they end up re-broadcasting non-repeating sounds such as voices, which makes t...

If Amazon doesn't want it back, I think you're in your right to RMA it and use the replacement. Better than just turning it into e-waste. Might as well. If you type "Cobalt SS ECU" in eBay, you get quite a few hits in the $100 range claiming they will also VIN-code it for you prior to shipping. How well that works when you install it yourself afterward is anyone's guess, as I've never had to do it. Cheap enough to be worth a try. If it at ...
