Re: Something's different...

The homepage is loop-redirecting to itself, but checking remotely it does work. Dislike the new design. :( And the forums redirect and work thru an Amazon WS address. Try clearing your cache. Yeah, not sure how I feel about the new design either, but we'll see how I feel after living with it for a ...

Threw me for a loop when the page formatting changed when I clicked for the next page of the Zen 2 review! :o

Also noticed some SSL security glitches earlier... I assume this was part of the switchover too?

If we're talking old-school, the first video card I ever owned was one of these. $179 in kit form - a bare PCB, a bag of components, and assembly instructions. Soldering iron not included.

Re: new PSU now SATA drives won't load

I think I'm going to try swapping boards (and BIOS chips) on these Sammy drives. I found the boards online, about 40 bucks each and there's a shop close to work that can swap the BIOS for me. This site seems to think it's at least possible to get the drive spinning again, long enough to grab some f...

Looks like my kind of place (the view, not driving that road).

When we used to do a lot of road trip camping vacations, one of my favorite places to stop was Badlands National Park, in South Dakota. The landscape is so alien, it feels kinda like you're camping on the moon.

Re: Gerbitl GPU spend $$$

My vote ($200-$300) is based on the most powerful GPU in the entire household that I paid for, not my system personally. Two family members - who both game more than I do - got GPUs for Christmas sometime in the past few years. It has probably been over 15 years since I paid that much for a GPU I in...

Re: When did this happen? DropBox "free" limits to 3 devices!

Well, with drive capacities being what they are these days, single-bay is probably enough for most people unless you want to run some sort of redundancy (RAID-1/5/6/10). I've had pretty good longevity on my drives overall also, not worried about one failing on me at all. Most of my important stuff ...

Or just get a better router and plug in a USB drive and host your own files. I just got my first NAS heh...single bay so y'all would probably laugh at it but I don't need more. About 10 years ago the CEO of Metra committed suicide by Metra train, believe it or not. Was under investigation for embezzling funds. Walked out on to the tracks, stood between the rails facing the train, and looked at it as it mowed him down. http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/05/07/illinois.metra.suicide...

Everyone’s threshold is different for what’s ‘fine’. I grew up in New York City and am comfortable on the bus and train. Friends of mine from more rural areas of the country who visit are often afraid to even touch the hand-holds or lean on the doors or look at people because they’re afraid. It’s a...

The problem you see may be due to the 'cultural features' of transit populations along certain routes. Some may be too diverse in mores and customs and/or see too many miscreants who are ungoverned, for uniformly nice riding experiences to become the norm. IOW: Some people just weren't raised right...

Yeah, the returns issue is potentially problematic as well, though I tend to research my purchases pretty carefully and/or buy only brands I've had very good luck with in the past, so I haven't had to return many parts. Hopefully the current build goes without incident, since I'm gonna be relying on...

I was thinking about buying a component a month for four months. Please don't do this. The only way it potentially makes sense to do it piecemeal like th...

The vast majority of mass transit related deaths around here seem to be either people being monumentally stupid (running/driving around gates at a grade crossing as a train approaches, or walking along the tracks while wearing headphones), and intentional "suicide by train" incidents.

Re: Mass Transit Safety

After years of riding mass transit (buses, trains, taxis) I expect a mass transit system to have the same level of crime as the city it serves. If you can walk down the street without being held at gunpoint, chances are you have the same breadth on the train as well. This, pretty much. If you're in...

To more directly address the issues raised in the first post, I'd say that yeah, you may be somewhat more likely to be a victim of a crime if you routinely take public transit in a big city vs. driving. But if you're in a city with a serious enough crime problem to make that a valid concern, you're ...

Also, the only way an Uber/Lyft driver is getting the mileage deduction is if they file their driving income on a Schedule C. Ordinary taxpayers can no longer deduct unreimbursed employee travel expenses under the 2017 tax law changes. See here: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-drop/n-19-02.pdf. So Uber...
